A Union Parishad (UP) member was beaten to death allegedly by his neighbours in Boali Union of Gaibandha Sadar Upazila on Friday afternoon.
The victim was identified as Abdul Jobbar, member of Boali Union Parishad.
The incident took place in Nasratpur village of the upazila.
Locals said that Wazed Ali, a resident of Nasratpur village, had been in a long-standing family dispute with his daughter-in-law, Rozina Begum.
On Friday, a quarrel erupted between Rozina’s husband, Jobayer, and his father, Wazed Ali. Following the argument, Rozina decided to return to her parental home with belongings given by her family in an effort to resolve the ongoing family feud.
At that point, Wazed Ali called Bozali UP member Abdul Jobbar to mediate the dispute.
During the arbitration, member Abdul Jobbar allowed Rozina to go to her father’s house with her belongings. Upon hearing the decision, Wazed Ali, his son Jobayer Ali, daughter Farhana, and wife Jobeda Begum became angry and started beating member Jobbar.
When member Abdul Jobbar fell critically ill, locals rushed him to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Shahinur Islam Talukder, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gaibandha Sadar Police Station, said that he had heard of the incident.
“Police have been dispatched to investigate whether it was a case of murder or something else,” he added.
