They met Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and submitted the application urging him to take appropriate actions against the judicial officers who ‘overstepped’.
Former speaker Barrister Muhammad Jamiruddin Sircar, former Attorney General AJ Mohammad Ali, BNP vice Chairman Khandakar Mahbub Hossain, Vice-chairman Advocate Zainul Abedin, BNP joint secretary general Mahbub Uddin Khokon, former minister Mir Mohammad Nasiruddin met the Chief Justice at his Supreme Court chamber and submitted the application.
After the meeting, Advocate Zainul Abedin said, “We said the Supreme Court is the guardian of the constitution and Chief Justice is the guardian of the Supreme Court. According to a rule of the High Court division, the Supreme Court can decide where a court would be settled. Without informing the highest court of the country, the government can’t issue a notice to set up the makeshift court.”
Khaleda Zia is now seriously ill and she is unable to walk, and in this situation, she needs medical treatment first then trial and the government itself is claiming that she is ill, they said.
Immediately after the meeting, Law Minister Anisul Huq entered the camber of the Chief Justice.
After his meeting, the law minister told reporters, “They (BNP lawyers) little idea about the law.”
On September 4, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry issued a gazette notification to hold the trial of Khaleda Zia in the case at the Old Dhaka Central Jail after setting up a makeshift court there.
The BNP chairperson is now at Nazimuddin Road central jail, serving five years' rigorous imprisonment as she was convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on February 8 this year.
