NCL: Joy guides Chattagram to big lead over Barishal
A brilliant century by one down Mahmudul Hasan Joy guided Chattogram Division to take a 128 runs lead over Barishal Division on the 2nd day of the four-day National Cricket League at the BKSP ground in Savar on Monday. Replying to Barisal Division’s first innings total 236 runs, Chattogram Division resumed the first innings Monday morning with overnight score 34 for no loss and scored 364 runs for 4 in 99 overs when the bails were drawn for the 2nd day. After the departure of two openers for 120 runs, one down Mahmudul Hasan Joy pairing with captain Mominul Haque contributed 112 runs in the 3rd wicket stand to carry the team total to 232 runs.

Mahmudul Hasan Joy hammered a polished 121 runs off 211 balls featuring nine fours and a six while two down Mominul Haque scored 85-ball 81 runs with the help of eleven boundaries. Besides, Shahadat Hossain (63), Jashimuddin (49), Irfan Sukkur (23) and Pinak Ghosh (20) were the other main contributors for Chattogram Division. Monir Hossain grabbed two wickets for 101 runs while Ruyel Mia and Moin Khan took one wicket each conceding 19 and 43 runs respectively. In the day’s other match at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Dhaka Division were trailing by 120 runs against hosts Sylhet Division on the 2nd day of the four-day league on Monday Replying to Dhaka Division first inning total 123 runs, Sylhet Division resumed the first innings with overnight total 79 for 2 and were all out for 265 runs featuring three half centuries by opener Sayem Alam (78), captain Zakir Hossain (67) and wicket keeper cum batter Jaker Ali (67). Nazmul Islam made the major damage in Sylhet innings snatching five wickets for 72 runs while Taibur Rahman grabbed three wickets for 40 runs.

67th death anniversary of Poet Jibanananda Das observed in Barishal
The 67th death anniversary of Poet Jibanananda Das was observed at Barisal, his ancestral city, with day-long program on Friday.
The event was organized by the poet Jibanananda lovers on the open stage of the city's Shilpakala Academy at 5.30 pm on Friday.
The poets demanded to preserve the house and property of Jibanananda Das in order to preserve his memory through discussing the poet's life and works and poetry recitation.
Besides, they demanded to name the open stage of Barisal Shilpa Kala Academy as Kabi Jibanananda Das Mancha.

The discussion session was attended by Chief Executive Officer of Barisal District Council Md Ahsan Habib, Director of Barisal University Jibanananda Research Center Professor Md Muhsin Uddin, Associate Professor Debashish Haldar of Bangla Department of Government Brajmohan College and Poet Henry Swapan.
Earlier, Barisal Brajmohan College administration and various cultural organizations put floral tribute on the altar of the portrait of the poet at the Poet Jibanananda Memorial Hall. Meanwhile, another discussion session was held at the Poet Jibanananda Das Auditorium and Library in the morning the National Poetry Council.
Poet, novelist and essayist Jibanananda, best known as the poet of ‘Ruposhi Bangla’, was born on February 17 in 1899. Jibanananda Das got hit by a tram while crossing a road near Kolkata’s Deshpriya Park on 14 October 1954. He succumbed to his injuries on October 22, 1954.
His volumes of poems include Jhhora Palak, Dhusar Pandulipi, Banalata Sen, Mahaprithibi, Satti Tarar Timir, Rupasi Bangla, Bela Abela Kalbela.
Man gets one year in jail over fraud in Ektee Bari Ektee Khamar project
A mobile court in Barishal Sadar upazila Sunday sentenced a man to one year in jail for embezzling money in the name of giving house under Prime Minister’s Ektee Bari Ektee Khamar project.
The accused was identified as Khalilur Rahman, from Raypasha village in Barishal Sadar upazila.
Barishal Sadar land officer Nishat Tamanna passed the order and said accused Khalilur has confessed of taking money from several people falsely claiming to be involved with the government project.
According to victims, Khalil formed a committee at Boroikandi and Potang village and took Tk 25,000 from those who needed a house from the Ektee Bari Ektee Khamar project.

Not getting the house for long when the villagers demanded their money back, Khalil provided them cheque. Which also got bounced from the bank and they figured out his false claims.
On Sunday, they planned to detain Khalil and called at Nathullabad bus stand to give money for the project and handed him to Barishal Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer later.
10 robbers held in Barishal
Coast Guard members on Thursday arrested 10 robbers along with sharp weapons from the Meghna River near Khalishpur area in Hijla upazila of Barishal.
According to Coast Guard, Coast Guard members of Hijla and Upazila Fisheries Officer conducted a joint drive on the occasion of "Mother Hilsa Conservation Campaign-2021".

At one stage, a gang of robbers attempted to attack the BGB team on their way from Khalishpur area of the Meghna River to Hijla with sharp weapons.
Later, the Coast Guard members arrested the robbers and seized a trawler, six sharp weapons, seven mobile phone sets and a torch light used during the robbery.
Coast Guard Media Officer of South Zone Lt. SM Tahsin Rahman said the arrestees were handed over to Hijla Police Station.
Fishing trawler hits UNO’s speedboat during Hilsa ban drive in Barishal
Two Ansar members were injured and a shotgun went missing in Gazaria river on Friday after a fishing trawler rammed into the speedboat of Mehendiganj upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) while he was overseeing a ban on Hilsa fishing.
Confirming the incident UNO Mohammad Shahadat Hossain Masud said legal action will be taken in this regard.
He gave no further details about the incident that occurred in Darirchar Khajuria Union of Mehendiganj upazila of the district.
The injured have been given first aid.

The divers of Barisal River Fire Service station launched a search for the missing firearm.
The 22-day Hilsa ban took effect on Sunday midnight aimed at ensuring the safe spawning of the popular fish during its peak breeding period. The ban will remain in place till October 25.
Fisheries department, upazila and district administrations, police and coast guard personnel will carry out regular drives to make sure that the ban is implemented strictly.
3 teens die as bus hits bike in Barishal
Three teenagers were killed when a speeding bus hit their bike on Shaheed Abdur Rab Serniabat bridge in Barishal city on Friday evening.
The deceased were identified as Siam, son of Sumon Hawladar, Chayan Das, son of Joydeb Das, and Rabbi of Bakerganj municipality area. All of them were aged between 15 and 17 years and students of Class X.
Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Bandar police station, said the accident occurred in the evening when the bus belonging to ‘Ratul-Rohan Paribahan’ rammed the bike at a high speed.

The three seriously injured teens were rushed to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.
The three friends, along with 15 others, had gone on a day trip to Barishal city on six bikes.
Police have seized the bus.

2 get death penalty for killing college student in Barishal
A court in Barisal on Wednesday sentenced two people to death and four others to life imprisonment in a case over the murder of a college student.
Those who got death penalty are Ziaul Haque Lalon and Riyadh Sardar while the lifers are Mamun, Imran, Biplob and Wasim Sardar.
Barisal Public Safety Disturbance Crime Prevention Tribunal Judge TM Musa delivered the verdict.
The court also acquitted 10 other accused as their guilt was not proved.

However, victim’s father Farooq Hossain Serniabat said those who got acquittal were also involved in the murder. “Once I get the copy of the full verdict, I will appeal to the High Court.”
According to the case, Sohag Serniabat, son of Mohammad Hossain Serniabat of Uzirpur Municipal area of Barisal, was stabbed to death on September 4 in 2014. Earlier, the accused vandalized the business establishment of Sohag for extortion of Tk 1 lakh.
Later, Khorshed Alam, uncle of the deceased, filed a case against 13 people with Wazirpur police station. Following investigation, police submitted a chargesheet on November 22 of the same year.
Payra Bridge to be opened in Oct: Quader
The Payra Bridge over the Payra River in the Lebukhali area of Barishal district will be opened to traffic in October, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said Wednesday.
“The Payra Bridge in the Lebukhali area is like another Padma Bridge for the people of the southern region, and the bridge will be opened to traffic next month,” he said.
The Minister said this while inaugurating as many as 11 bridges in three districts virtually from the office of the additional chief engineer of Barishal Roads and Highways division.

“75% construction work of Bekutia Bridge in Pirojpur district is complete, while the government has approved the construction work of Nalua-Baherchar Bridge in ECNEC. We should introduce a culture of completing work within stipulated time and that too after maintaining quality,” he said.
Quader iaugurated 11 bridges, involving Tk 83,23,98,000, in Barishal division.
The bridges include 28.78m-long Babuganj Bridge, 31.828m-long Khasherhat Bridge, 31.828m-long Nababer Haat Bridge, 31.828m-long Kauria Bridge and 15.74m-long Khasherhat Bridge in Barisal district.
Besides, 44.02m-long Gurudhan Bridge in Jhalakati district, 69.898m-long Kheyaghat Bridge on Kathalia-Koikhali-Banaihat Road, 44.02m-long Banglar Jar Bridge on Paran Talukdarhat-Borhanuddin-Charfashion-Charmanika regional highway in Bhola district, 44.02m-long Debichar Bridge on Debirchar-Najirpur-Lalmohon-Mangalshikdar-Tajumuddin regional highway were inaugurated.

Two more bridges -- 63.798m-long Hetalia Bride on Charkhali-Tushkhali-Mathbaria-Patharghata Road and 75.978m-long Madarsi Bridge on the same road in Pirojpur district -- were also inaugurated.
Additional chief engineer of roads and highways department Tarek Iqbal and supervisor engineer Mintu Ranjan Debnath were also present on the occasion.
Bailey bridge collapse snaps road link in Barishal
Road communication between Sadar upazila and other parts of Barisal has remained suspended since Wednesday morning, following the collapse of a Bailey bridge on Banaripara Road in Babuganj upazila.
The Bailey bridge collapsed when a Barishal-bound stone-laden truck from Pirojpur was crossing it in the small hours of Wednesday, officials said.

However, repair work is already underway and the local police and residents are trying to restore the road link, said Kamlesh Chandra Haldar, officer-in-charge of Airport Police Station.
Attack on UNO’s house: 12 AL men get bail in Barishal
A Barishal court on Thursday granted bail to 12 Awami League leaders and activists in two cases filed over the attack on the residence of Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Munibur Rahman on August 18.
Barishal Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Masum Billah passed the order, said General Register Officer Khokon Chandra Das.
He said a petition was filed on August 29 seeking bail for the 12 accused.
City Awami League joint general secretary Hasan Mahmud,its organizing secretary and BCC Ward No 21 councillor Sayeed Ahmed, relief secretary Moazzem Hossain Firoj were among those secured bail today.

On August 15, the court granted bail to nine other accused in the cases.
With these, all the 21 accused except two got bail. Two other accused did not get bail as they are undergoing treatment in Dhaka.
On August 22, a court rejected bail plea of 21 Awami League men arrested in connection with the cases filed over the attack .
A clash broke out between the supporters of the AL, BCL and members and Ansar when the former tried to attack the residence of the UNO at Sadar Upazila Complex in Barishal on August 18.
Five people suffered bullet wounds during the clash. Of them two AL men lost their eyesights later.
Earlier two separate cases were filed in this connection.

Upazila Nirbahi officer Munibur Rahman of Barisal Sadar Upazila and Assistant sub-inspector of police Shahjalal Mallick were the plaintiffs in these cases accusing the mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah and his men of obstruction of government work and attempt to murder.
