Four killed in Barishal road accident
Four people were killed and three others injured when a bus crashed into a battery-run three-wheeler on the Dhaka-Kuakata highway in Bakerganj upazila of Barishal district on Wednesday.
The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Alauddin Milon, officer-in-charge of Bakerganj Police Station, said the accident occurred when the Barishal-bound bus hit the three-wheeler at high speed, leaving four of its occupants dead on the spot.
On information, police recovered the bodies and sent them to a local hospital morgue for post-mortem. "The injured have been hospitalised," the OC said.
Headmaster, UNO thrashed by AL men who grabbed their fish enclosures
A school headmaster, UNO and local journalist were among a group of villagers allegedly beaten up by local Awami League and Jubo League leaders as he protested their illegally occupying a fish enclosure in Wazirpur upazila of Barishal on Friday, said police.
According to the locals, Wazirpur upazila Awami League Organising Secretary Mashiur Mia and his younger brother Jubo League leader Monir Mia have been cultivating fish occupying fish enclosures belonging to others, including the school teacher, in Patibari village of the upazila.
The victim, Ujjwal Kumar Mandal, headmaster of Rajihar Secondary School in Agailjhara upazila, said the local owners, including him, were protesting the illegal grabbing of the enclosure on Friday afternoon.

“Enraged by this, Monir and Mashiur beat me and UP member Amal Mandal,” he said, adding that they also vandalised Ujjwal’s shop and looted Tk 5 lakh.
They also assaulted a local journalist, he said.
In this regard, Mohammad Momen, inspector of Wazirpur police station, said legal action will be taken after investigating the matter.
Cattle traders robbed of Tk 30 lakh in Meghna
A group of cattle traders returning home by a ferry after selling their cattle and goats was robbed of Tk 30 lakh by armed men in the Meghna river off the coast of Barishal on Tuesday.
Faruk Hossain, sub-inspector of Kaliganj River Police, said Aziz Shikdar, a cattle trader, along with 10-15 others, hired the vessel to go to Laxmipur Mollarhat from Char Ekokria for selling 28 cattle and 50 goats ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

While they were returning home after selling all the goats and 18 cattle, armed robbers got into the ferry in the Lalboya area around 6pm, thrashed them and decamped with the cash, the officer said.
"A probe is on," said SI Faruk.
Tufan ready to storm Barishal cattle market
In Barishal, Tufan is the talk of the town ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
Tufan isn't any other ordinary bull, technically a steer, a neutered male popular for its meat -- the 5ft tall cattle weighs around 25 maund.

Emdadul Haque Raihan, its owner, said that he reared the bull in his dairy next to his brick kiln in Ranirhat village of Bakerganj upazila of Barisal.
"I spend around Tk 1,200 a day to feed this huge bull," he told UNB.
Everyday locals throng Raihan’s dairy to catch a glimpse of the big bull.

Sohag, who takes care of Tufan, said that the big bull eats around 12kg of food daily, which includes wheat bran, rice bran, maze, dried hay and raw grass.
Besides, the bull gets a bath daily.
According to sources at the Barishal Livestock and Fisheries Department, “Enough sacrificial animals are available in the upazila. However, farmers are a bit worried about getting good prices.”
Three held for killing 8-yr-old boy in Barishal
Three people have been arrested in connection with the murder of an eight-year-old boy in Barishal's Ujirpur upazila, police said on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Dipto Mandal, son of Dipak Mandal from Harta union. His body was found stuffed in a sack in a pond around 5.30am on Tuesday, four days after he went missing.
The arrestees have been identified as Ratan Biswas, his wife Eva, and Nayan Shil, said Ali Arshad, officer-in-charge of Ujirpur police station.

The boy went missing from his house around 11pm on Friday. The next day, his father Dipak filed a missing person's complaint at the police station, the OC said.
“In the early hours of Tuesday, locals and his family members nabbed Ratan and Nayan suspecting their role in the boy's murder. The two have admitted to killing the boy and dumping his body in the pond," he added.
The body has been sent for post-mortem, he said.
Bus crashes into tree in Barishal; 10 killed
Ten people including a child and a woman were killed and 20 others injured after a bus crashed into a tree at Bamrail in Wazirpur upazila on Barishal-Dhaka highway Sunday morning.
Seven of the deceased were identified as Arafat Hossain Hawlader, 9, Anwara Begum, 20, Nazrul Islam Akon, 35, Halim Mia, 31, Sentu Mollah, 50, Ramzan Hawladar,38, and Madhab Shil, 45.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Wazirpur Police Station Ali Arshad said the bus of Jamuna Line Paribahan was heading towards Bhandaria upazila from Dhaka.
The driver lost control over the steering when it reached Bamrail in Wazirpur upazila and hit a tree around 5.30 am, leaving eight people dead on the spot and 20 others wounded.

Two of the injured succumbed to their injuries when they were taken to a hospital, he said.
Md. Jahangir, unit leader of Barishal Fire Service, said firefighting units from Gournadi and Wazirpur fire stations rushed to the spot and were conducting rescue operations.
Firefighting units retrieved the bodies after cutting the bus as it got twisted after the fatal accident, said witnesses.
The accurate number of the deceased and injured will be known once the rescue operation is completed, they said.
The injured were sent to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital and Wazirpur Upazila Health Complex.
Dr. Pranab Roy Shuvo, Resident Medical Officer of Wazirpur Upazila Health Complex, said that the bodies of seven people have been brought to the health complex. Besides, five injured victims are undergoing treatment there.
Two die as bike hits electric pole in Barishal
Two young men were killed after their bike dashed into a roadside electric pole at cruise speed in Barishal city on Thursday night, police said.
The deceased were identified as Sudipto Saha, 25, son of Uttam Saha and Antu Saha, 25, son of Dilip Saha.
The accident occurred around 11.15pm at Amtala intersection in front of Reneta office, said Lokman Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kotwali model police station.

"The one riding the bike list control of the two-wheeler, leading to the accident. While he died on the spot, the one riding pillion succumbed to his injuries at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital," he said.
The bodies have been kept at the hospital morgue for post-mortem, said the OC.

Road accidents claim 14 lives in 4 divisions
At least 14 people were killed, and 12 were injured in six road accidents in Barishal, Chattogram, Rajshahi, and Khulna divisions Thursday, according to police.
In Barishal city, a motorcyclist and a pillion rider were killed in a crash with a light pole at night.
Twenty-five-year-old Sudipta Saha died on the spot; Antu Saha succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to Sher-e-bangla Medical College Hospital, Lokman Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model Police Station, said.
In Sirajganj, five workers were killed and six others injured when a truck crashed into a mini passenger vehicle, locally known as Leguna, on the busy Hatikumrul-Bonpara highway in the early hours of the day.
The deceased Mukul Hossain, 35, Monir Hossain, 34, Makbul Hossain, 35, Abdul Halim, 45, and Haidar Ali, 40, were occupants of the mini passenger vehicle, Lutfur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Hatikumrul Highway Police, said.
In Bandarban, three people were killed and six others injured as a microbus with nine tourists aboard fell into a roadside ditch in Thanchi.
The deceased were identified as Md Monjurul Islam, 40, of Mymensingh, Md jaynal Abedin, 32, of Faridpur, and Md Hamidul Islam, 41, of Lalbagh, Dhaka, Rakib, sub-inspector of Thanchi Tourist Police, said.
In Khulna city, a 65-year-old-man was killed when a speeding truck hit him at Zero Point.
The deceased Bachchu, a retired banker, was from Masjid Lane, Darogapara of the city, Md Emdadul Haque, officer-in-charge of Harintana Police Station, said.
In Chattogram, three people were killed in road accidents in Anwara, Sitakunda, and Karnaphuli upazilas.
The deceased were identified as Dipankar Nath, 11, of Patiya, and Abdul Hamid, 28, of Karnaphuli, Iftekhar Hossain Munna, 28, of Sitakunda.
In Anwara, a speeding pickup van hit Dipankar while he was crossing the road, killing him on the spot, SM Didarul Islam Shikdar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Anwara Police Station, said.
In Karnaphuli, biker Abdul Hamid sustained serious injuries when his two-wheeled vehicle crashed into a truck in Charlakkhya.
Later, he succumbed to his injuries at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), Sadikur Rahman, inspector of CMCH Police Outpost, said.
In Sitakunda, biker Munna was killed after being hit by a covered van in Shitolpur, Nazmul Haque, officer-in-charge of Baro Aulia Highway Police, said.
Road accidents in Bangladesh continue to claim hundreds of lives every year.
As many as 543 people, including 81 children, were killed and 612 others injured in 427 road accidents in April, the Road Safety Foundation said in its latest report released on May 7.
The non-government organisation said 206 lives were lost in 189 motorcycle accidents, which is 37.93 percent of the total deaths.

Four get life term in Barishal for killing youth
A Barishal court has sentenced four people to life term imprisonment for killing a youth in Rajapur upazila of Barishal district in 2019 .
It also fined the convicts Tk 5,000 each, in default, they have to serve additional three months in jail.
The court also acquitted five accused as their involvement in the killing was not found.
Barishal divisional speedy trial tribunal judge Mahamudur Rahman delivered the judgment in presence of the convicts on Wednesday.

The convicts are Jashim Khan, Helal Fakir, Faisal Fakir, and Belal Fakir.
According to the case statement, Mehedi Hasan Shuvo was stabbed to death on March 26, 2019 at Boryear village in Rajapur upazila of Jhalakati district following previous enmity.
Victim’ s father Mahabub logged a complaint with Rajapur police two days after the killing naming 15 people.
On July 20, 2020, inspector Md Mainuddin and Abul Kalam Azad of Rajapur police station submitted a charge sheet before the court against the nine accused.
50-yr-old killed over family feud in Barishal
A 50-year-old woman was hacked to death allegedly by her daughter-in-law over a family feud in Kathalia village of Barishal's Bakerganj upazila on Wednesday night.
The deceased was identified as Nazneen Begum, wife of Hanif Hawladar of the village.

Alauddin Milon, officer-in-charge of Bakerganj Police Station, said Laboni Akter and her mother-in-law lived in their village house "while Nazneen’s two sons stay and work in Dhaka".
Around 10.30pm, Ujjal, the elder son of Nazneen, made a phone call to his mother. As no one received the call, Ujjal requested his uncle Kalam Hawladar to visit their house. When Kalam reached the house, he found Nazneen lying in a pool of blood.

On information, police recovered the body and arrested Laboni. "We are investigating the murder. However, we suspect family feud behind the crime,” said the OC.
