Poor people demonstrate for food in Jashore
Around 200 low-income and poor people demonstrated in front of Manirampur Upazila Parishad in Jashore demanding food aid as there is no income because of restrictions on movement to curb coronavirus transmission.
The people of Sundalpur, Agarhati, Gangra, Mohadebpur, Dolkhola, Mohonpur and Joypur village gathered at the upazila parishad compound for relief.
But they had to return empty-handed after waiting for hours.
Shahidul Islam, a transport worker from Sundalpur village, said he had no income as he could not go out amid restriction. “I haven’t received any food aid so far,” he said.
Another worker Harun said they waited in an open field for hours but at one stage, the uazila nirbahi officer left office.
However, Upazila Parishad Chairman Nazma Khanom assured them that the local administration would distribute food aid going from door to door.
UNO Ahsan Ulla Sharifi said 15 metric tonnes of rice had already been distributed. “Another 19 tonnes will be distributed. Besides, there is a help line. If anyone calls us and seeks relief, we’ll go to their houses with food aid,” he said.
He said they also prepared a list of people who came to the upazila parishad for help. “We’ll distribute food among them soon,” he said.
Woman gives birth to conjoined twins in Jashore
A woman gave birth to conjoined girls at a private hospital in Jashore district town on Sunday night.
Khurshid Begum was taken to the hospital following her labour pain at night. She gave birth to the conjoined twins through C-section under the supervision of Dr Nilufer Islam, said her husband Ujjal Miah, resident of Tosbispur village in Hakimpur union of Chowgachha upazila.
The mother and the children are doing well, said Ujjal Miah.
Trader stabbed to death in Jashore
A trader was stabbed to death and two others were injured in an attack by miscreants at Kharki in the Jashore district town on Wednesday night.
The deceased was identified as Al Amin, 24, son of Alamgir Hossain of the area.
Maniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model Police Station, said a group of miscreants swooped on them while they were returning home around 9:30pm.
The miscreants stabbed them indiscriminately, leaving them injured.
Later, they were taken to Jashore Medical College Hospital. Doctors referred Al Amin to Khulna Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
Al-Amin died while being taken to KMCH around 1am.
Police arrested three suspects over the murder.
Child kept in quarantine dies in Jashore
A child who was kept in quarantine at Sadar Hospital, died early Monday.
Coronavirus: 555 Jashore overseas returnees quarantined in 24hr
Jashore’s district administration sent another 555 overseas returnees to home quarantine in the last 24 hours until Monday night to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
Among them, 414 returnees are from the Sadar upazila alone, said Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr Protiva Gharai.
So far, 1,108 overseas returnees have been home quarantined since March 10 in the district, she said, adding that 676 of them are in the sadar upazila.
Jashore Civil Surgeon Dr Sheikh Abu Shahin said nobody from the district has so far tested positive for coronavirus.
“The people in quarantine are under our supervision. They have our contact numbers, and we have theirs. Health workers are collecting information from them twice a day,” he said.
Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Kamruzzaman said they have been putting red flag at houses of overseas returnees in the upazila.
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Shafiul Arif on Saturday said 23,000 people have returned home from abroad in the last one month.
Committees have been formed at ward level with members of union parishads. "Llegal action will be taken if anyone disobeys the rules of home quarantine," he said.
