Sunamganj: 5 get life in prison in attempted rape, rape cases
A Sunamganj court on Thursday sentenced five people to life imprisonment in rape and attempted rape cases.
Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Md Zakir Hossain gave the order during a hearing in the presence of the accused.
The lifers are Anwar Hossain Khokon from Biswambharpur upazila; Shafi Ulla, Saidur Rahman, and Shafiul from Tahirpur upazila and Iqbal Hossain from Chatak upazila.
According to the case complaint, in 2012, Anwar abducted a college student and raped her in the Laurergar area in Tahirpur.
Later Shafi Ullah, Saidur, and Shafiul tied Anwar's hands and legs. They took turns raping the student and filmed it, and posted a video online.

The girl later filed a case against 11 people at Tahirpur Police Station. Of them, four were sentenced to life imprisonment Thursday and four others were cleared of charges. The names of the remaining three accused were dropped from the charge sheet as they were not proven guilty in the investigation.
Also, on March 17, 2012, a 13-year-old girl was abducted by Iqbal and Jaynal Abedin from Chatak upazila. The accused raped the girl after taking her to Sylhet, according to the case complaint.The court on Thursday sentenced Jaynal to life term and Iqbal to 14 years in jail.
Attack on ex-judge Manik: 50 BNP men sued
A case has been filed against 50 unidentified BNP men in connection with the attack on former Supreme Court Judge AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik.
The judge’s gunman Md Rafiqul Islam filed the case against the BNP men at Paltan police station around 11.15pm on Wednesday, said Salahuddin Miah, officer-in-charge of the police station.
The case was filed for carrying out attack on the former judge, his driver, gunman and vandalising his car, the OC said.

The accused will be arrested after scrutinising the CCTV footages, he said.
According to the caste statement, the attack was made from a procession of the BNP in Nayapaltan area on Wednesday afternoon.
The retired Supreme Court judge came under attack on this way to attend a TV talk show.
The incident occurred around 4:15 pm when he was crossing Nayapaltan area near Rajarbagh Central police Hospital, said Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC-Motijheel) of DMP Enamul Haque Mithu.

3 get life imprisonment for ‘gang rape’ of 2 girls in city
A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced three people to life imprisonment for raping two teenage girls in the capital’s Kadamtali area two years ago.
Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal -3 Judge AM Zulfikar Hayat pronounced the judgment.
The lifers are Sohel Bepari, 38, Rana Bepari, 32, and Akter Ali, 38.
The court also filed them Tk 1 lakh each and they have to serve six months more jail in case of failure to pay the fine.
The court acquitted another accused as charges brought against him could not be proved.
According to case statement, the victims and accused were tenants of the same building at Kadamtali area.

On February 8, 2020, the accused forcefully entered the victims’ flat around 10 pm and raped them.
Later the two victims filed a case at Kadamtali police station. Police submitted a chargesheet in the case against four accused.
On September 15, 2021, the court began official trial in the case by framing charges against the accused.
Police sue 50 BNP activists over Thursday's clash in Rangpur; 4 arrested
A case was filed accusing 50 identified BNP men and 1500 to 2000 unnamed ones over a clash between police and supporters of the party that left over 50 injured during a programme in Gangachara upazila of the district on Thursday.
Law enforcers have so far arrested four BNP activists from different areas of the upazila since the clash.
Hossain Raihan, assistant commissioner of police (ASP) of the district, confirming the arrests said the case was filed accusing 50 named individuals and more than 1500 unnamed on Friday morning.
Sources said the upazila unit BNP called for a programme protesting the price hike of essential commodities and death of Jubo Dal activist Shaon during a clash with police in Narayanganj on September 1, in Puraton Sonali Bank intersection of the upazila on Thursday.

A clash broke out between police and the supporters of the opposition party following an interception by the law enforcers to the demonstrators on their way to Gangachara Bazar from the intersection around 4.30pm, sources and witnesses said.
At one stage, ASP Raihan said the BNP men pelted brickbats, and they retaliated with batons leaving over 50 people including cops injured.
“The case was filed after scrutinizing necessary things so that no innocent is subjected to harassment,” he added.
Case filed against 5,000 over Jubo Dal activist's death in Narayanganj
A case was filed against 5,000 unnamed people over the death of Jubo Dal activist Shaon in a clash between the law enforcers and BNP activists in Narayanganj Sadar upazila Thursday, police said.
"Shaon's elder brother Milon Pradhan filed a complaint at Narayanganj Sadar Police Station Thursday night. After that, a first information report (FIR) was registered," Anisur Rahman Molla, officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station, said Friday.

"We will take legal action against those involved in the killing following an investigation," the OC added.
Thursday, Shaon was killed and 50 people were injured in a clash between police and the BNP activists in Narayanganj as the law enforcers tried to prevent local BNP leaders and activists from holding a rally during their founding anniversary.
Primary school teacher sued for raping 9th grader in Kurigram
An assistant teacher of a government primary school was sued in a case filed on charge of raping a ninth grader in Phulbari upazila of the district on Friday.
The accused has been identified as Motaleb Mia, an assistant teacher of Gorukmondal Government Primary School and son of late Chad Mia of Naodanga union in the upazila.
Local Abdul Karim said the teacher developed love affairs with the girl of a local educational institution and raped her several times promising marriage.
At one stage, the girl became pregnant and put pressure on him to marry her but he intentionally delayed, he said.
As the both families failed to reach consent after holding arbitration on Thursday night, the victim’s father filed the case accusing the teacher, father of two children, at the local police station on Friday morning.

Fazrul Rahman, Officer-in-charge (OC) of Phulbari Police Station, said they sent the survivor to Sadar Hospital for medical test through a court.
Though the accused went into hiding following the case, efforts are on to nab him, the OC said.
Ashrafuzzaman, acting education officer of the upazila, said legal action will be taken against him if the allegation is found true.
Crab gives 7-day ultimatum demanding withdrawal of case against journos Jewel, Azad
Crime Reporters Association Bangladesh (Crab) on Thursday gave a seven-day ultimatum to a contractor company to withdraw a ‘false case’ that it filed against DBC journalist Saiful Islam Jewel and camera person Azad Ahmed.
Crab raised the demand while staging a human chain and protest rally at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) premises in the capital's Segunbagicha.
The journalist leaders expressed deep concern and strongly condemned the ‘false case’ filed against the journalists by Nazmul Hasan Bhuiyan, brother of Kawsar Bhuiyan, owner of contractor company Victor Trading.

They said, On August 2, Kawsar and his associates attacked Jewel and Azar, leaving them seriously injured. Kawsar and his accomplices were arrested and currently in jail over the incident but now they are giving murder threats to the journos.
The speakers said memorandums will be submitted to the Ministry of Law and Ministry of Home Affairs demanding the withdrawal of the case. If the case is not withdrawn within seven days, Crab, DRU, Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) will announce a united programme soon.
DUJ president Sohel Haider Chowdhury, former president Abu Zafar Surya, DRU president Nazrul Islam Mithu, general secretary Nurul Islam Hasib, DRU former general secretary Kabir Ahmed Khan, former Crab general secretary Sarwar Alam, addressed the rally presided over by Crab president Mirza Mehedi Tamal.
FIR lodged over Dhaka BRT girder tragedy
A police case has been filed in connection with the Dhaka Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) girder tragedy that claimed the lives of five people, all of a family, on Monday.
The FIR for causing death due to negligence does not name anyone but lists the crane operator and the company responsible for the project, China Gezhouba Group Co Ltd, police said.
"The case was filed at Uttara west police station on Monday night on a complaint from Afran Mondol, the brother of two of the deceased -- Fahima and Jhorna," said Md Mohsin, the station's officer-in-charge.
“The crane operator and China Gezhouba Group Co Ltd have been listed in the FIR,” said the OC. "Police will investigate if the negligence of the crane operator and others concerned led to the accident."

On Monday, the five, including two children, died after one girder of the BRT project fell on their private car. A newlywed couple also travelling in the same car, fortunately escaped death.
The deceased were identified as Rubel, 50, Fahima, 40, her sister Jhorna, 28, and Jhorna's two children Jannat, 6, and Jakaria, 2, said Yeasin Gazi, inspector of Uttara west police station.
Rubel's son Hridoy, 26, and his wife Ria Moni, 21, escaped with serious injuries and were rushed to a local hospital. "They are currently out of danger," said the officer.
Fahima was Ria Moni's mopther said her brother, Afran Mondol.
The accident occurred around 4.15pm when the girder of the Gazipur Expressway fell on the car from a crane while it was being moved in front of Gazipur Paradise Tower, he added.

Firefighters recovered the five bodies from the ill-fated car and handed those over to the police.
A family member said Hridoy and Ria Moni got married on Saturday and were going to the latter's house in Gazipur, along with five other relatives, in the car that afternoon.
Hridoy's father Rubel was driving the car when the girder fell on the vehicle.
The tragedy occurred exactly a month after a worker was killed by a falling crane in the Gazipur part of the project.
Also, last year, six workers escaped with injuries after a part of a launching girder collapsed near them, close to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
Case filed over female physician’s killing at Dhaka hotel
A case has been filed over the killing of a female physician at a hotel room in Dhaka.
The case was filed at Kalabagan police station after victim’s father Mohammad Shafiqul Islam lodged a complaint against her lover Rezaul Karim Reza, said Saiful islam, Officer-in-Charge of Kalabagan police station.
“Rezaul was a banker but recently he was suspended. Efforts are on to arrest him as soon as possible,” said the OC.

The body of Jannatul Nayeem Sritika ,28, who was undertaking gynecology training from Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) after completing her MBBS was recovered on Wednesday night.
OC Saiful Islam, said. "There were marks of knife wounds on her body."
The manager of the hotel was detained and police suspected the doctor's boyfriend fled after killing her.

130 sued over BNP activists-police clash in C'nawabganj
A case has been filed against 130 people in connection with the clash between BNP activists and police in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj that left five people including a cop injured on Sunday.
Sub-inspector of Shibganj Police Station Sihab filed the case at the police station Sunday night accusing 130 BNP activists including 100 unidentified ones, said Zobayer Ahmed, officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station.
Police have so far arrested 12 people in this connection, the OC added.

On Sunday, BNP leaders and activists gathered near Islami Bank Mor of Shibganj Bazar to hold a rally as part of their central programme protesting the price hike of daily commodities including oil, gas, fertilizers and the murder of Swechchasebak Dal leader Abdur Rahim and Chhatra Dal president Noor-e Alam in Bhola.
At one stage, police obstructed them as a huge traffic jam was created there due to the rally.
The leaders and activists pelted brickbats targeting police, triggering a clash that left at least 5 people injured, said police.
Later, police lobbed tear gas shells and rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.
