1 held over attempt to kidnap Barishal Journalist
Police detained a man for primary questioning after an alleged attempt of kidnapping the bureau chief of Somoy Television in Barishal city on Sunday noon.
The detainee is Shahin Hossain Mallik, owner of Mumitu Community Center, the location where the miscreants tried to kidnap the journalist Apurba Apu, said Haridas Nag, Inspector of Barishal Metropolitan Detective Branch of police.
The incident occurred around 3 pm in front of Mumitu Community Center at Shitla Khola area in the city.
Apurba Apu said he was returning to office on foot after covering an accident news and as he reached near the community center a man on a rickshaw started scolding him for his work.

“He attacked me and we had a scuffle. As I ran toward Mumitu Community Center another man tried to take me inside a white private car but I managed to flee,” he said.
The journalist reported the matter to police and said he has no idea why the men attacked him.
A witness on condition of anonymity told UNB that former local Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader Zehad, Mamun, and Alam were among the people who tried to kidnap the journalist.

Monjur Hossain, Deputy Commissioner of DB police (BMP) said the matter is under investigation and soon the accused will be arrested.
RAB: 26 held for extortion and snatching in the city
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) said on Friday they arrested 26 people from different areas of the capital in connection with extortion and snatching.
During the first raid Rab arrested 14 people including Md. Mosharraf Hossain, Md. Masud Raihan, Md. Rokon, Md. Billal Hossain, Md. Akhtar Hossain, Md. Harun, Md. Saheb Ali, Md. Jewel, Md. Arif Chowdhury, Md. Al Amin, Md. Sumon, Md. Rana, Md. Iman Ali and Md. Iqbal.
Rab members recovered Tk 44,990 in cash and 15 mobile phones from the arrestees, said a Rab media release.

During the second raid 12 people were arrested including Md. Sumon, Md. Abdur Rahman, Md. Saiful Mia, Md. Ripon Mia, Md. Amirul Islam, Nityananda Adhikari, Md. Anwar Hossain, Md. Sohail, Sharif, Mubarak, Md. Al Amin and Suruj Mia.
Four razors and seven switch-geared knives were recovered from them
During interrogation, the arrestees admitted that they have been illegally extortioning money at rate of Tk 100 to Tk 500 from shops, hawkers, three-wheelers and trucks in their respective areas.
They are also involved in snatching valuables from pedestrians, rickshaw and auto-rickshaw passengers showing arms and weapons in the city.
Legal action has been taken against the arrestees, said additional police super (ops officer) Beena Rani Das.
2 held for illegally selling jammer, repeater and network booster in the city
Rab have arrested two people for illegally selling jammer, repeater and network boosters from the city’s Mohammadpur area on Sunday.
Arrestees Md. Abu Noman, 28, and Sohel Rana, 37, used to sell these products via Facebook and e-commerce platforms, they said during interrogation.

During the operation Rab recovered four mobile network jammers, 24 jammer antennas, three power cables, three mobile network boosters, nine outdoor antennas for booster, 26 indoor antennas for booter, 37 booster cables and a laptop from them.
The duo sold more than 200 jammers and network boosters in the last two years. There are two cheque fraud cases against Sohel Rana in Chittagong and Khulna districts, said Beena Rani Das Additional Police Super, Staff Officer (Ops & Media).

Purchase and sale of all these instruments and parts without the approval of BTRC is a punishable offense. Legal action is being taken against the arrestees, she said.
Man held for 'raping' stepdaughter in Lakshmipur
Police have arrested a man for allegedly raping his 13-year-old stepdaughter in Kamalnagar upazila of Lakshmipur.
Locals told UNB that the accused had been living at his parents-in-law's house since his marriage with the rape survivor’s mother three years ago.

On Wednesday, when the girl’s mother went to her sister's house, the accused raped the girl after spiking her juice with sleeping pills. The girl narrated her ordeal to her aunt the next morning, following which the police were informed and a complaint was lodged.

"A case of rape has been filed and the accused has been arrested. The girl has been sent for a medical test," Mohammad Solaiman, officer-in-charge of Kamalnagar police station, said.
Nearly 27,000 litres of edible oil seized in Rajshahi, one held
Police have seized nearly 27,000 litres of edible oil illegally stored in two warehouses in Rajshahi and arrested one of its owners.
On a tip-off, a team of cops raided the two warehouses in the Taherpur Bazar area of Rajshahi’s Bagmara upazila on Monday night and made the seizure.

"The seized oil includes 19,176 litres of soybean oil. The remaining was mustard oil," said IK Alam, additional superintendent of Rajshahi district police.
"The arrestee took the state-owned godown on rent. He has been identified as Shahidul Islam Swapan, 40, a resident of Cheokhali village," the officer said.

"Later we seized another 31 drums of soybean oil from a nearby godown owned by Swapan’s brother Rafiqul," he said. "His brother, however, managed to escape."
Legal action will be taken against the arrestee and the two godowns have been sealed, said ASP Alam.
10 held by BGB for 'illegally entry'
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Tuesday claimed to have detained 10 people while they were entering the country illegally from India via Moheshpur border in Jhenaidah on Monday.
All the detainees claimed to be Bangladeshi nationals, BGB officials said.

A patrol team of BGB-58 conducted a drive in the area and detained them, said Md Saiful Islam, assistant director of the unit.
"They were held while entering the country from India without valid documents."

Later, the detainees were handed over to the Moheshpur police station. A case has been filed in this regard, Saiful added.
Drug peddler held with 1 lakh yaba pills in Cox’s Bazar
Members of Border Guard (BGB) detained a drug peddler with one lakh yaba pills worth Tk 3 crore from Ukhiya upazila in Cox’s Bazar early Sunday.
The detainee was identified as Nasir Uddin, 39, of the upazila.
According to a media release of BGB, a patrol team of BGB-34, tipped off, detained Nasir conducting a drive at his home in Koroibuniya of Ratnapalang UP around 2am.
The street value of the seized yaba pills is around Tk 3 crore, said the release.
The detainee was handed over to Ukhiya police station under a drugs case.
There are four more fugitives accused in the case, it added.
2 held over strangling a girl to death during rape attempt in Joypurhat
Two men were arrested over strangulating an Honours first-year student to death while attempting to rape her on Friday at her home in Panchbibi upazila in Joypurhat.
The arrestees were identified as Rony Mahanta, 29, son of Shankar Mahanta and Zahid Hasan alias Kamini Zahid, 33, son of Khorshed Mandal, said Masum Ahmed Bhuiyan, Superintendent of Joypurhat police in a press briefing on Sunday.
He said in primary interrogation the arrestees have accepted their involvement in the crime.

“The accused were neigbours of the girl and planned to rape her after her brother threatened them several times for teasing and giving indecent proposals to the victim,” said SP Masum Ahmed.
“They entered the girl's house after being sure her brother and sister-in-law were not home and tried to rape her around 2 am. As she protested and attacked them, they in a bid to stop her screams strangled her to death with her clothes,” said the SP.
On Saturday morning her relatives found her body on the bed and informed police.

Following a tip off police arrested the two accused from separate areas of the Majhina village in the upazila.
Earlier, victim’s brother filed a murder case with Pancbibi police station in this regard.
Suspected militant leader held in Narail
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on Tuesday claimed to have arrested a militant leader from Narail district on Monday.
The arrestee has been identified as Md Russel Sheikh Salman, son of Md Robiul Islam Robi of Taltola in Narail. He is the divisional leader of the banned militant outfit Ansar al-Islam, according to Rab.
Acting on a tip-off, a special team of Rab-6 conducted a drive in the Taltola area of Sadar upazila around 4pm on Monday and arrested Russel.

During preliminary interrogation, he admitted to his involvement in the activities of Ansar al-Islam, said Kabirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.
A case has been filed against the arrestee, he added.

Ansar Al Islam member held in city
Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested a member of banned militant outfit Ansar Al Islam from Mohakhali area in the city on Saturday.
The arrestee is Ujjal Mia alias Ujjal Khandaker, 23, son of Sunahr Khandaker of Habiganj district.

Police also seized one mobile phone set, some Jihadi books, leaflet from his possession, said a press release of CTTC unit.
A case was filed with Banani Police Station.
