Four bikers killed in separate road accidents
Four bikers were killed in two separate road accidents in Bogura and Rajshahi on Friday, police said.
In Bogura, a biker and his pillion rider were killed when a bus hit their motorcycle at Sherpur upazila in Bogura on Friday morning.
The deceased were identified as Fazar Ali Khaja, 42, and Belal Hossain, 52, of the upazila.
The accident occurred when a bus hit the motorcycle on Simabari-Ranihat regional road in Jamnagar around 7am and fled the scene, leaving the riders of the motorcycle dead on spot, said Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) 0f Sherpur police station.
The bodies were handed over to their families, said the OC.
In Rajshahi, two youths were killed when a truck hit their bike in Godagari upazila on Friday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Ijaz Ahmed, 20, son of Mohammad Ali Bakul of Laxmipur area in Rajshahi city and Zahid Hossain, 20, of Pirijpur village in Godagari upazila.
The accident occurred around 3:00 pm when a Rajshahi-bound truck hit the bike, killing the biker and the pillion rider on the spot, said Kamrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Godagari Model Police Station.
The bodies will be handed over to their families after completing legal procedure, the OC added.
Police seized the truck from the spot. However, the driver and his assistant manage to flee the scene, he said.
Five killed in Rangpur road crash
Five people were killed when a microbus crashed into a three-wheel vehicle carrying them on the busy Dhaka-Rangpur Highway in the district on Wednesday night, police said.
The deceased were identified as Amzad Hossain, 50, Sirajul Islam, 37, of Taraganj upazila, Ambia Begum, 60, Jahangir Alam, 45 and Nazma Begum, 35, of Gangachhara upazila of the district.
The accident occurred around 7pm near Sanetala Bazar in Sadar upazila of Rangpur district.

"The Taraganj-bound microbus hit the three-wheel vehicle coming from the opposite direction, leaving three of its occupants dead on the spot and two others injured," said Mahbub Morshed, officer-in-charge of Taraganj highway police.
The two others succumbed to their injuries on the way to hospital, he added.

Road accidents in Bangladesh
As many as 6,284 people, including 927 women and 734 children, were killed in 5,371 reported road accidents across the country in 2021.
Road Safety Foundation (RSF), an organisation that campaigns for safe roads, on Saturday revealed a new report on 2021 accidents on Bangladesh's perilous roads.
According to the report, 7,468 people suffered injuries in road accidents last year.
Besides, 166 died in road accidents in March this year in Bangladesh, according to a report by Bangladesh Human Rights Commission (BHRC).
Report: 323 lives lost on the road during Eid holiday rush
Road accidents during this Eid-ul-Fitr holiday rush claimed 323 lives in just 15 days, even though long-haul buses were off the road due to Covid-19 lockdown, said Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Shamiti on Sunday.
At least 318 road crashes occurred during May 7- 21 period, the passenger welfare forum revealed while presenting its road accident report-2021 at a press briefing here.
The report also said 622 people were injured in road accidents during the period when lakhs of people hit the road to celebrate the Eid festival with their families in village homes.
The Eid was celebrated on May 14 during the Covid-19 lockdown.

The number of road crashes usually increase as people’s movement surges during such festival.
According to the report, the number of both deaths and accidents on the road increased this year.
Due to lockdown, public transports remained suspended, but the holidaymakers packed private cars, microbuses, motorcycles, auto rickshaws, trucks, pick-up vans and covered vans.
The report also stated that among the deceased, 35 were women, 22 children, 69 pedestrians and 31 transport workers, and 96 drivers.

According to the report, like other years accidents on motorcycles were at top recording 139 deaths in 144 accidents this year.
This accounts for 45.28% of the total accidents and 43.03 % of the total deaths recorded.
About 32.28 percent accidents took place in national highways, 40.88 percent in regional highways, 22.32 percent in feeder roads, the report stated analyzing the types of accidents.
Members of the road accidents monitoring cell of the forum prepared the report collecting information from widely published and trustworthy national, regional, daily newspapers and online portals in the 15 days.

Of the total accidents 3.14% occurred in Dhaka and 1.25% in Chattogram.
The report also mentioned 331 people died and 772 sustained injuries in 322 accidents occurring jointly on the country's road, rail and waterways.
“Movement of only 8 to10 percent of the population caused so many accidents and deaths only due to negligence of the concerned authority and organizations liable for road safety,” said Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, general secretary of the Jatri Kalyan Samity.
He strongly demanded that the government prioritizes the road safety and take necessary measures.

Public transport expert and director of FBCCI, Abdul Haque said, “transport owners face graft and suffer a lot when they go to Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) for fitness tests or other services”.

249 lives lost on the road during Eid holidays
The number of deaths in road crashes during the Eid holiday rush increased during the just concluded Eid ul Fitr, despite a ban on inter-district bus operations due to the Covid-19 pandemic, two civic bodies said Tuesday.
At least 249 people were killed and 385 others were injured in 207 road crashes over the 12 days till Monday, as people rushed to travel home and come back to Dhaka, according to a report jointly prepared by Green Club of Bangladesh (GCB) and National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways.
The report covers the period between May 6 and May 17.
The report also stated that among the deceased, 35 were women, 29 children, 23 pedestrians and 27 transport workers, including drivers.

Both accidents and deaths increased during this Eid-ul Fitr's holidays from the last Eid-ul Azha, the report observed.
Cumilla Crash: Victims belong to 3 generations of a family
A man, his daughter and granddaughter died Tuesday, as a truck piled into a CNG auto-rickshaw in Chiwra, an area of Chauddagram in Cumilla.
The deceased were identified as Md Hanif, his daughter Mery Begum, and granddaughter Mehzabin.
Yasin Prodhania, Fire Service and Civil Defence in-Charge of Chauddagram, said the driver of the truck lost control of his vehicle and hit the auto-rickshaw hard- killing Mery on the spot and injuring four others.

After being taken to the hospital, doctors declared two more dead, said Prodhania.

Road accidents killed 409 pedestrians in 3 months: RSF
A total of 409 pedestrians, including 66 women and 97 children, were killed between January and March this year in road accidents, according to the Road Safety Foundation (RSF).A report prepared by RSF with information collected from seven national dailies, five online portals and electronic media reports, blamed 61.8 percent of the accidents on reckless driving and 38.19 percent on the insincerity of pedestrians.

Two killed in Rajshahi road crash
Two people, including a woman, were killed after a truck collided head-on with an auto-rickshaw in Murailipur of Paba upazila in Rajshahi on Wednesday afternoon.
One of the deceased was identified as Ansar Ali, 40, while the identity of the woman could not be known immediately.
Rajshahi Fire Service and Civil Defence Senior Station Officer Abdur Rauf said a Chapainawabganj-bound truck hit an auto-rickshaw at 2:45pm, killing two people on the spot and injuring two others.

Police have recovered the bodies from the spot, he said.

17 killed Rajshahi road accident
At least 17 people were killed in Rajshahi after a passenger bus collided head-on with a microbus on Friday.
The accident occurred in front of Katakhali Police Station around 1:45pm.
Police identified 15 of the deceased as Salauddin, 38, his wife Shamsunnahar, 32, their children Sajid, 9, and Saba, 18 months; Kamrunnahar; Tajul Islam, his wife Mukta, their child Yamin; Mokhlesur, Ful Mia, his wife Nazma, their children Sumaiya, Sadia and Faisal; and driver Hanif Mia.
Police said the microbus, carrying 15 people, including two children and four women, was going to Rajshahi’s Shah Makhdum shrine from Rangpur’s Pirgonj.
A Dhaka-bound bus of Hanif Paribahan from Rajshahi collided with the microbus head-on.
“The gas cylinder inside the microbus exploded on impact, killing 11 of its passengers on the spot,” said Rajshahi Metropolitan Police’s Spokesperson Additional Deputy Commissioner Golam Ruhul Kuddus.
Eight of the injured were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Six of them succumbed to their injuries.
Two survivors are undergoing treatment at RMCH.
