24 Chhatra Odhikar Parishad members produced in court, a day after arrest
Police on Saturday produced in a court 24 office-bearers and activists of the Chhatra Odhikar Parishad (COP), a day after apprehending them in a case lodged on a complaint from a leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra league (BCL).
“BCL leader Md Nazim Uddin filed a police complaint against the COP members in the wake of Friday’s clash between BCL’s Dhaka University unit and the Parishad, based on which an FIR was filed and the arrests were made,” said Nur Mohammad, officer In-charge of Shahbag Police Station.
Earlier, some BCL activists had attacked the injured Parishad members for the second time while they were undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
To avoid further trouble, police took the Parishad activists into custody.
At least 12 people were hurt as BCL members "swooped" on a rally brought out by COP inside the Dhaka University campus Friday in memory of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) student Abrar Fahad.

The clash left over a dozen injured from both sides and they were rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where another brawl broke out.
Abrar, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering at Buet died on October 7, 2019, after he was mercilessly beaten up by the university's Chhatra League members over his Facebook post criticising the Bangladesh government's deals with India.

At least 12 people were hurt as leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) "swooped" on a rally brought out by the Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad on the Dhaka University (DU) campus Friday in remembrance of Buet student Abrar Fahad.
Abrar, a second-year student of the electrical and electronic engineering department of Buet (Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology) died on October 7, 2019, after he was mercilessly beaten by the university's Chhatra League men over his Facebook post criticising the government's deals with India.
Today, the Chhatra League men attacked the protest rally at Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture organised to observe Abrar's third death anniversary.
As the protest programme began, Chhatra League activists launched attacks from the university's Teacher-Student Centre, vandalised the chairs and public announcement system, tore off the posters and burned them. They also chased Chhatra Adhikar Parishad men towards Shahbagh, brandishing chairs and sticks.

BCL Vice-President Mohin Uddin, Joint General Secretary Mahbub Khan, Organising Secretary Nazim Uddin, Private University Affairs Secretary Al Amin Rahman; deputy office affairs secretaries Shimul Khan, Abdur Rahim; Jahurul Haque Hall unit President Kamal Uddin Rana, General Secretary Rubel Hossain, and other leaders and activists of the ruling party's student wing carried out the attack, reports our DU correspondent.

Zahid Ahsan, library secretary of the DU Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, and Chhatra League Central Committee Organising Secretary Nazim Uddin were among the injured.
Bin Yamin Mollah, president of Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, told UNB that the BCL men injured 12 of their activists during a "peaceful programme," without any provocation. "As I went to see them at Dhaka Medical college hospital, BCL again attacked us."
BCL Joint General Secretary Mahbub Khan said Chhatra Odhikar Parishad leaders and activists were holding the programme with outsiders and fundamentalists on the DU campus. "When we asked them whether they were university students, they attacked us. Later, the university's students stopped them."
Chhatra League trio arrested for extortion in Faridpur
Police arrested three Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men including two leaders on charge of extortion from a road construction contractor on Thursday.
The arrestees were identified as Saltha upazila unit BCL Vice Presidents Imamul Khan, Abu Musa Prince, and activist Jasim Molla.
They were sent to jail through a Faridpur court on Friday, said Md Sadik Khan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Saltha Police Station.
According to the case statement and locals, a contractor called ‘Tasa Construction’ was carrying out carpeting work on a 2-kilometer stretch of road in the Saltha College Road area.
A group of youths numbering eight to ten allegedly led by the BCL leaders accosted a trolley driver who was engaged in supplying construction materials for the road, and asked him to pay Tk 1 lakh.

Former BCL leader beaten by up Naldanga upazila chairman dies at hospital
A former Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader, who was allegedly beaten up by Naldanga Upazila Parishad Chairman Asaduzzaman over a Facebook post on Monday, died while undergoing treatment at a hospital on Tuesday.
The deceased is identified as Jamiul Alim Jibon, a former member of the upazila unit BCL and son of Farhad Hossain of Aamtali Bazar area.
Sources said Chairman Asaduzzaman beat up the former BCL leader and his father after calling them to the bazar over the Facebook status on Monday evening, leaving them critically injured.
They were first rushed to Natore Sadar Hospital and later shifted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) due to deterioration of their physical conditions.
Jibon succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the RMCH on Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile, the victim’s mother Jahanara Begum lodged a complaint at the police station in this connection.
Shafiqul Islam, Officer-in-charge of Naldanga Police Station, said they heard the news of death of Jibon. The chairman is yet to be detained in this connection.
Chairman Asaduzzaman, also member of the upazila unit Awami League, could not be reached over mobile phone as it was found switched off.
BCL factional clash leaves eight injured at Chattogram College
At least eight leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Chattogram College unit were injured in a factional clash between two groups over a trivial matter on the campus on Tuesday noon.
The injured are Safayet Hossain Raju of Mathematics fourth year, Hamim Rafsan of HSC second year, Jahedul Ovi of Islamic History second year, Wahidul Rahman Sujon of honours third year, Alif Javed of History first year, Zia Uddin of Social Science masters, Nayeem of History masters and Mohammad Monir of History fourth year.

Witnesses and sources said the fellows of the college unit President Mahmudul Karim and General Secretary Shuvas Mollick locked into a clash over an altercation between seniors and juniors around noon.
At one stage, brick chips were pelted from other sides leaving at least eight people injured and several windows of the History department vandalized during the incident. The BCL men sustained injuries to their heads and legs.
President Mahmudul Karim said outsiders led by Shuvas carried out attacks on them without any provocation and several students got injured in the incident.
On the other hand, GS Shuvash claimed some of his younger brothers were injured in the attack by the terrorists and he knew how to control the goons.
Ala Uddin, sub-inspector of Chattogram Medical College Hospital Police outpost, said five BCL men left the hospital after receiving first aid.
“Mismanagement”: BCL faction to submit complaint against Al Nahian, Lekhak to AL high-ups
A faction of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) – consisting of more than one-third of the student body’s central panel – has decided to submit a complaint letter against the “irregularities and mismanagement” by BCL president Al Nahian Khan Joy and general secretary Lekhak Bhattacharjee.
Contacted, some BCL central committee leaders confirmed the development, saying that they went to the Awami League party office today (September 10, 2022) and tried to submit the complaint letter to the party’s Office Secretary Biplab Barua but couldn’t reach him.
They said that some top leaders of Awami League have assured them of taking necessary steps against Al Nahian and Lekhak. However, they will try once again to send the letter to the party high-ups.
A copy of the letter has been obtained by UNB, which says that Al Nahian and Lekhak have formed most of the recent committees by taking money from the candidates. Besides, they have posted “former Shibir and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists along with drug addicts and drug peddlers” in the top positions of the committees, they alleged.

The letter also says that Lekhak Bhattacharjee is “engaged in stone trading in Sylhet and has created a monopoly by controlling the business there”. Also, Lekhak has managed licenses in the name of his brother Avinav Bhattacharjee for Hilsa trading, abusing his influence as a top leader of BCL, it says.
The letter also alleged that Al Nahian and Lekhak regularly support wrongdoings of some BCL leaders by not taking any action against them.
BCL leader expelled after getting caught with Yaba in Chattogram
A Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader of Patiya municipality in the district has been expelled from the organization following his arrest by police with Yaba pills early Wednesday.
The BCL leader has been identified as Atiqul Rahman alias Gazi Alvi, joint convener of Patiya municipality unit BCL. Sources said Alavi along with his aide identified as Ashraful Islam alias Shawon was arrested with 1,400 Yaba pills from the Jungle union of Patiya upazila in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Reacting to the incident, the organizing committee of the Chattogram south district BCL fired Alvi from the organization, said a press release signed by its President SM Borhan Uddin and General Secretary Md Abu Taher on Wednesday.

Besides, the leaders jointly recommended to the central body to expel him permanently.
Ahsan Habib, sub-inspector of Patiya Police Station, said on information they conducted a drive in the area and detained them on suspicion.
Later, a total of 1,400 pieces of Yaba pills were recovered from the duo's possession.
A case under the Narcotics Control Act was filed accusing Alvi and Shawon in this connection, the police officer added.
BCL's Thakurgaon functionary suspended over Bangabandhu remarks
Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) has suspended one of its leaders from Thakurgaon for allegedly making defamatory remarks on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the National Mourning Day programme.
The suspended leader has been identified as Arif Khan Joy, general secretary of BCL’s Samir Uddin Memorial College unit, according to a press release issued by the Thakurgaon BCL unit on Monday.
The district BCL unit has also asked Joy to submit a written explanation on the allegation brought against him within three days.

It has warned of making recommendations to the BCL central committee president and general secretary for his expulsion in case the response is not satisfactory.

On August 15, a 15-second video of Joy went viral on social media where he made the purported derogatory comments on Bangabandhu. After the video was brought to the district BCL unit’s attention, it decided to suspend him.
BCL forms probe body over Kushtia toll plaza attack
A two-member committee has been formed by the district Chhatra League in connection with the attack on six officials of Mas-Ud Rumi bridge toll plaza over collection of tolls on Friday.Sourav Khan, vice president of Kushtia District Chhatra League and joint general secretary Shakeel Ahmed Tushar are members of the committee.It has been asked to submit a report within 72 hours, said a Bangladesh Chhatra League press release issued on Saturday night.Earlier, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists roughed up six officials of Mas-Ud Rumi bridge toll plaza over collection of tolls on Friday, leaving all of them critically injured.The injured were receiving treatment at Kushtia General Hospital. A video of the incident that has gone viral showed some BCL activists also snatching away money from the toll plaza.According to eyewitnesses, some leaders and activists of BCL’s Kumarkhali upazila unit were going to Kushtia Government College in Kushtia Sadar on 30-40 motorcycles to attend a programme.“Once the motorcycles reached the west side of the Mas-Ud Rumi bridge, one of our officials asked them to pay the toll.

Eden College: BCL president threatens to drive out some students
An audio of Eden College unit Chhatra League President Tamanna Jasmine Riva has been leaked where she threatened to drive out several students from the hostel room of the college.The audio clip spread on social media on Friday night where BCL leader Tamanna was heard threatening other students.In the audio clip, Tamanna was heard saying, there is no one above the president of this college. So listen to what I say. Otherwise, you will be punished. During that time, she used some slang words with them.Some students said Tamanna came to their room and threatened them to drive out of the hostel because they had not joined the Chhatra League programme.One of the students said, " We did not talk against her (Riva) fearing troubles. But now we raised our voices against her and brought the matter to the attention of the madams.”When contacted, the BCL leader said, "It is not a big deal. They misbehaved with some of my juniors when they went to their room.Later, I went to their room to settle the issue and used some slang words."

They are nothing but my family members. Though it was in a very personal environment, I admit that it was my fault to use unchecked language from my responsible position.
