BCL leader’s body recovered from Brahmaputra River
Police recovered the body of a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader from Brahmaputra river in Kochandhara area of Jamalpur Sadar upazila on Saturday morning.
The deceased was identified as Zahid Faisal Fahim, 25, BCL vice-president of Nandina wing and resident of Kanil village of the upazila.
According to police, Fahim went on a boat trip to Narundi Kochandhara area of Brahmaputra with three friends on Thursday afternoon. On their way back the boat capsized. Though others managed to swim ashore, Fahim drowned.
On information, Jamalpur Fire Service divers started a rescue operation on Thursday evening. Till Friday night they were not able to recover his body.

On Saturday morning, locals spotted his body floating in the river and informed the police.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Jamalpur Sadar Police, Kazi Shah Newaz, said Fahim's body was recovered from Brahmaputra river on Saturday morning and an unnatural death case was registered.
The family had no complaints, so the body was handed over to them without an autopsy, he said.
Two IU BCL men held with hemp
Police arrested two activists of Islamic University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of ruling Awami League, along with hemp from in front of the university's main entrance on Friday.
The arrestees were identified as Tanu Shikder, a former student of public administration department under 2014-15 academic session and Gulhar Masud Rana Rifat, a final year student of the same department of the university.
They were the activists of IU BCL unit. Tanu was also the incumbent general secretary of IU unit Muktijoddha Mancha.
Acting on a tip off, a team of IU police conducted a drive in front of the university's main entrance and arrested the duo along with 25gram of hemp from their possession around 5:30pm, Islamic University police station sub-inspector Onik said.
They were taken to IU police station for interrogation and legal action would be taken against them, the SI added.
The process of filing a case with the police station under the Narcotics Act was underway, IU police station officer-in-charge Mostafizur Rahman said.

BNP denounces attack on Saki as scandalous
BNP has strongly condemned the attack on Ganosanghati Andolan Coordinator Zonayed Saki reportedly by the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League and said it will remain as a scandalous incident in history.
“This is a heinous attack and it will remain as a stigma in history,” he said.
In a statement on Tuesday night, Fakhrul said such an attack on Saki during his visit to a hospital to express sympathy to the injured people in the Sitakunda depot fire can only be possible by cowards.
“This attack is extremely against civilization and human values. This incident has proved that the government wants to run the country by letting lose the terrorists,” he said.
The BNP leader also said this attack is also a strategy to divert people’s attention from all the failures of the government.
He said the ‘’demonic Nazism’’ got exposed more intensely through the violent attack on Saki.
The BNP leader said opposition parties and people of different faiths are now not getting spared from the bloody scourge of the government-backed ‘terrorists’. “What is the sign of this? Their mischievous attempt to attack the opposition forces and destroy voting, democracy and fair elections has not stopped.”

He also said the government has been making one evil plan after another with all its might.
“Zonayed Saki has been bloodied through the attack that was carried out with the intention to kill him. Now is the time to resist them,” Fakhrul observed.
He urged all the democratic forces to get united to defeat the ‘illegitimate’ government by putting up barricades in the streets against ‘fascism’.
“I strongly condemn and protest the violent attack on Zonayed Saki by the armed terrorists of Awami Chhatra League and wish his a speedy recovery,” he said.
The BNP leader also demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the attackers. "
On Tuesday evening, Saki and some other leaders and activists of his party were injured in an attack allegedly by some Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
‘BCL men’ attack Junaid Saki at CMCH
Coordinator of Ganasanghati Andolan Junaid Saki was injured in an attack allegedly by some Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) Tuesday evening.
He was attacked when he went to the hospital to visit people wounded in the deadly fire incident in Sitakunda container depot.
Several other leaders and activists of Ganasanghati Andolan were also injured in the attack.
Junaid Saki alleged that some BCL men attacked them after the visited the burnt injured at CMCH.
“We first visited fire-ravaged Sitakunda depot and later visited the wounded people at the hospital. At one stage, some BCL men attacked us leaving at least 20 leaders and activists of seven political parties injured,” he said.
Two police personnel saved them but the rest police members remained inactive during the attack, he alleged.

Junaid Saki is now undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the port city.
Bangladesh Gana Odhikar Parishad senior joint convener Rashed Khan was among the injured.
Denying the allegation, Chattogram city Chhatra League general secretary Zakaria Dastagir said BCL men were not involved in the incident.
BCL attacks Progressive Students Union protest rally against Ctg depot fire
Some activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League attacked a protest rally of progressive students organisations in front of Shahbagh police station on Monday evening.
The incident occurred around at 6.45 pm when progressive student organizations went for a protest rally from in front of the national museum demanding proper investigation into the BM Container Depot fire, arrest of its owner and proper amends to the victims and their families.
"Anik Roy, vice-president of the student union, was badly injured in the attack and received eight stitches on his head at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital. Besides several more of our activists were injured ,” said Acting President of Bangladesh Socialist Student Front, Joydeep Vatyacharya .
"We were on our way to the Raju sculpture with the procession and as we reached in front of Shahbagh police station, BCL leaders and activists suddenly attacked us with bricks and stones", he added.

According to another witness, some BCL leaders and activists were going toward Shahbag on motorcycles when they were blocked by the procession of leftist organizations.
They allowed an ambulance to pass but did not allow the BCL leaders and activists to do so which led to an altercation and soon it turned violent, he said.
Moudut Hawlader, Officer-in-Charge of Shahbagh police station said, "I was informed about the incident. The leaders and activists of the leftist organizations were attacked by BCL men due to a quarrel between them over not allowing them to cross the road but we did not get any complaint yet in this regard. "

However, the victims of progressive students organizations were identifying the attackers as Masruk Hasan Sujon, follower of Siam-Master Da Surja Sen hall(DU) Chhatra League general secretary- Najmul Hasan Rupu, Dhaka University Chhatra League Human resources development deputy secretary.
BCL blockade halts classes, exams at CU
The overall activities of Chittagong University came to a halt on Wednesday as a faction of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) enforced a blockade from the morning following an infighting between its two factions.
Witnesses said a group of BCL men put the main gate of the university under lock and key and stopped the shuttle train services by placing logs on the rail tracks, causing sufferings to the students.

No buses which carry teachers left for the city in the morning amid obstruction by the BCL men and different departments were forced to postpone their exams and classes, said students.
JCD leader sues 33 BCL men for 'attempted murder'
Some 33 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), including Central BCL vice-president Tilottama Sikder, have been sued on charges of theft and intended to commit murders.
Mansura Alam, a member of the convening committee of the Dhaka University Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), filed the case in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shanto Islam Mallik on Sunday.
Besides, 100 unnamed BCL leaders and activists have been accused in the case.

The court accepted the plaintiff's statement and directed the officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahbagh police station to submit a report on June 26 after investigating the allegations in the case.
According to the case statement, the leaders and activists central committee of Bangladesh BCL and DU BCL attacked JCD leaders and activists with local weapons when they were carrying forward the scheduled rally in the university area, leaving 70-80 JCD leaders and activists injured.

On May 22, Mansura Alam, JCD activists of Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall Atiq Murshed and several others were attacked by BCL leaders at the university’s TSC area, stated in the case.
Govt unleashes BCL to attack JCD on DU campus: BNP
Accusing the government of unleashing Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) against Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), BNP senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Friday warned that the consequences of the attacks will not be good.
"Those who (AL leaders) are letting loose their student leaders and workers (BCL) and providing them with arms, sticks, and support to attack Chhatra Dal on Dhaka University campus should think of their consequences, " he said.

Speaking at a rally, the BNP leader said the Awami League government has been indulging in terrorist activities as it has become isolated internationally. “They have no support internationally and the people of the country have rejected them. They have now no choice as their ways all around are blocked. ”
He said no party can stay in power for a long time by resorting to hooliganism and terrorism when it loses public support and the earth beneath its feet.
BNP’s Dhaka north and south city units arranged the rally in front of the Jatiya Press Club in protest against the attacks on JCD on Dhaka University campus.
Mosharraf, a BNP standing committee member, also warned the BCL leaders and activists that they will have to face the same fate as the attackers of Biswajit and Abrar Fahad for attacking the JCD leaders and activists.
He said the JCD has launched a street movement for the restoration of democracy through their protests programmes at DU.
"We would like to say that the leaders and workers of Chhatra Dal are the children of the people of this country. Their parents are also getting ready to resist you. All those are involved with BNP and its all associate bodies are brothers or guardians of Chhatra Dal. So, no one of these guardians will remain sit idle,” he said.

The BNP leader said all the democratic forces and patriots will get united to make the ongoing movement a success.
He urged the government to quit power immediately by dissolving parliament and handing over power to a non-party neutral government to avoid the consequences of the ruling party leaders of Sri Lanka.
Once a neutral government takes power, Mosharraf said it will take steps for creating a proper atmosphere in the country for holding a credible election.
"EVMs won’t be allowed in the election to be held under a neutral government. The country’s people will elect their representatives by giving votes in their own hands (through ballot paper),” the BNP leader said.
Tension mounts as BCL, JCD clash at DU
Activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) locked into a clash on Dhaka University campus on Thursday, leaving several of them injured .
Police said seven JCD activists were injured in the clash in front of Shilpakala Academy around 12 pm while JCD leaders claimed that over 30 of their activists were injured in the clash.
Activists of BCL, student wing of Awami League, from different dormitories of Dhaka University equipped with bamboo sticks, wood, iron rods, steel pipes and helmets attacked the JCD activists when they were marching towards Doel Chattar with a procession as per their pre-scheduled prigramme, said witnesses.

Newly nominated BCL hall leaders led the BCL activists who carried out the attack, alleged some JCD activists.
