Prime accused among 9 held over Bagerhat Swechchasebak Dal leader killing
Nine people including the prime accused in Swechchasebak Dal leader Nure Alam Tanu Bhuiya killing case have been arrested from Indurkani upazila of Pirojpur district on Saturday night.
The arrestees were Farid Sheikh, 28, prime accused and son of Tutul Sheikh, Manir, 26, son of Jamal Mistri, Ratul, 27, son of Ali Akbar, Sirajul, 27, son of Sobhan, Alamin, 30, son of Esmail, Sumon, 26, son of Rustam Ali, Mukul Sheikh, 53, son of Moslem Sheikh, Kabir, 50, son of Sobhan Sheikh and Sohagh, 25 of Bagerhat district town.

Acting on secret information, a joint team of police, Rab and DB conducted a drive and arrested them at night, said KM Ariful Haque, superintendent of Bagerhat Police while talking at a press briefing on Sunday.
Most of the arrestees confessedto their involvement in the killing, he said.
All of them will be produced before Bagerhat Chief Judicial Magistrate Court with a seven-day remand prayer, he added.
Nure Alam, general secretary of Bagerhat unit Swechchasebak Dal was shot dead following an enmity over establishing supremacy and previous enmity.
Police recovered one pistol, one magazine and one bullet used during the killing from the possession of the arrestees.
Later, a murder case was filed against 17 identified people and 7-8 unidentified people with Bagerhat Model Police early Sunday.
2 smugglers detained with gold worth over Tk 5cr in Benapole
Police on Monday detained two smugglers and seized 62 gold bars, weighing 7.025 kg from them along Sharsha border in Jashore district.
The detainees are Nayem Hossain, 40, and Azharul Islam, 35 - both residents of Sharsha upazila.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of police conducted a drive along the bordering area and detained them this evening while they were trying to smuggle the gold to India, said Additional SP of Navaron Circle Police, Jewel Imran.

Later, they were searched and the 62 gold bars were found on them.
The market value of the recovered gold is estimated to be around Tk 5.33 crore, the officer said.
More will be disclosed in the press conference tomorrow said ASP, adding that the case against the accused gold smugglers is under process.
Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal leader held in city
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Sunday detained General Secretary of Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal Sultana Ahmed from her residence in the city’s Gulshan.
Sultana was later shown arrested in a case filed at Paltan police station under the Digital Security Act, said Salahuddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Paltan Model police station.

She was sent to a court after the arrest, the OC added.
However, the OC did not provide any information about the allegations brought in the case.
Four arrested after kidnapping businessman for ransom in Sylhet
Police arrested four persons for realising Tk 1.85 lakh from an apparel businessman after he was abducted on October 7.
Though police produced the arrestees with a remand prayer before a court on Tuesday, it sent them to jail fixing Wednesday for the hearing in this connection.
Md Kamrul Islam, officer-in-charge of South Surma Police Station, confirmed the matter to UNB.
Police had arrested them from Humayun Rashid Chattar in South Surma upazila by Monday, but only disclosed the matter today.
The arrestees are Md Tamij Ali, 40, son of late Abdus Samad of Chhatak upazila, Topu Ranjan Dev, 35, son of late Romendra Narayan Dev of Kotwali, Md Sajjad Mia, 45, son of late Anrej Mia and Md Nayon Mia, 35, son of late Sheikh Majid Mia of an area under Sylhet airport police station.

Police said the apparel businessman had been waiting for a bus to take him to Dhaka in front of the Al Safa Rest House, located within the upazila, around 5am on October 7.
That’s when four persons riding two motorbikes abducted him and took him to a rest house in Zindabazar of the city, asking for Tk 3 lakh as ransom, the police said.
The abductors were able to get Tk 85,000 off him, at the same time targeting his wife and pressuring her into transferring another Tk 1 lakh to them.
After receiving the amount, the kidnappers released him around 2am on October 8.
OC Kamrul said they arrested the abductors on Monday after the victim filed a case in this connection.
Khulna woman remains missing for 18 days, 6 held
Police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested six people in connection with the disappearance of a 55-year-old woman in Khulna on August 27.
Rahima Khatun went missing after she had stepped out to fetch water near her home in the Banikpara area of Doulatpara upazila in Khulna around 10pm on that day.
Rahima’s second husband Belal Howladar was taken into police custody on Monday night for interrogation and later was shown arrested in a case filed on a complaint filed by her children, said Nazrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Doulatpur police station.
Earlier five others -- Mohiuddin, Palash, Jewel, Helal Sharif and assistant engineer at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) Golam Kibria -- were arrested in this case.

Of them, four were accused by the plaintiff in the case statement, said the OC.
OC Nazrul said that Rapid Action Battalion and other law enforcing agencies were also investigating the matter along with police.
“On August 27, Rahima’s cell phone was active in the Jogipole area after 10 pm but it was switched off before it could be tracked,” said the OC.
Rahima’s daughter Mariyam Hannan, in a Facebook post, said on Monday that her mother "has been missing for the last 17 days" though the administration claimed they are working to find her.

“Every moment my mother’s face comes to my mind whether I go to sleep or eat. She must be hoping her children will find her soon,” she wrote.
Absconding accused in rape and murder case of Natore school teacher arrested
The absconding accused of a sensational case filed over the rape and murder of a female school teacher in Natore was arrested Monday.
The arrested accused is Ahsan Habib, 30, said Nasirul Islam, inspector of Natore Police Bureau of Investigation.
Habib was sent to jail after being produced before court, he said.

On information, he was arrested from Baraharishpur area in Natore sadar around noon while trying to escape to Dhaka, said the PBI inspector.
On July 23, 2019, a group of miscreants raped and later stabbed a local primary school teacher to death at her house. They dumped her body in a pond beside her house.
Earlier, two other accused in this case were arrested, said PBI.

Father held over varsity student's suicide
Rab on Wednesday arrested a man for allegedly instigating the suicide of his 21-year-old daughter, who blamed her father of being ‘rapist’ in a suicide note, from Gafargaon upazila in Mymensingh.
The man was identified as Shaheen Islam, who had been absconding since the incident on Saturday, said Rab’s legal and media wing director Khandaker Al Moin.

On Saturday noon, Sanjana Mosaddika, a first year student of Brac University, allegedly killed herself after jumping off a 10-storey building in Mollartek of the city’s Dakkhinkhan area, said Md Azizul Haque Miah, officer-in-charge (OC) (investigation) of Dakkhinkhan police station.
She was rushed to National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) where she succumbed to her injuries.
Meanwhile, police recovered a suicide note from the woman's flat where she blamed her father for her death calling him ‘abusive and rapist’.
Three fake rights activists jailed in Magura
A Magura court has sentenced three people to one-and-a-half years of rigorous imprisonment for collecting money from a pharmacy owner in the guise of human rights activists.
The court of district senior judicial magistrate handed down the punishment to Kalpana Roy, Hasina Begum and Uttam Kumar Biswas, all residents of Shalikha upazila of Magura, on Thursday.
The court also imposed a fine of Tk 1,000 on each of them. The convicts will have to serve two more months in prison in case of their failure to pay the fine.

According to the case statement, on December 12, 2017, the convicts introduced themselves as human rights activists to a pharmacy owner in Singra Bazar and took money from him.

The pharmacy owner, however, became suspicious and informed the police who subsequently arrested the trio. Later, a case was lodged at the Shekhor police station in this connection.
23 year-old girl invited by ‘friend’ to visit Sylhet, raped by 7
A 23-year-old girl has allegedly been raped by seven people for three days when she went to visit Sylhet on invitation of one of her friends.
The crime took place at the house of the girl’s ‘friend’ Julee from August 19 to August 21, said Nazmul Huda, officer-in-charge of Jalalabad Police Station.
A complaint was lodged with Jalalabad Police on Tuesday.
Police arrested three people in this connection. They were Julekha alias Julee, 19, ‘friend’ of the rape survivor and wife of Zubayer Hossain, Zubayer Hossain, 28 and Joynal Mia, 40.
Of the arrestees one gave confessional statement before the court on Tuesday while the two others were placed on one-day remand.

According to the complaint, the girl, hailing from Mymensingh district, used to live in Azimpur in Dhaka. July is her Facebook friend.
After getting invitation from Julee, the girl went to her house in Sylhet. Later, the alleged rapists with the help of Julee confined her to a room where she was violated by seven people twice.
Julee assisted the rapists during her stay in the house, it said.
Now the girl is undergoing treatment at Osmani Medical College and Hospital, said Azbahar Ali Sheikh, deputy commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police.
