Ali Riaz Post-Graduate Research Prize Trust Fund introduced at DU
Ali Riaz Post-Graduate Research Prize Trust Fund has been introduced at the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of Dhaka University (DU).
Distinguished Professor of Illinois State University, USA Dr Ali Riaz handed over a cheque for Tk 10 lakh to DU Treasurer Professor Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed on Sunday at the Vice-Chancellor's office to introduce this Trust Fund.
Vice-Chancellor of DU Professor Md Akhtaruzzaman, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Professor Sadeka Halim, Chairman of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism Professor Abul Mansur Ahmed, Registrar Probir Kumar Sarker and donor's elder sister Safrun Ara were present on the occasion.
Out of the income of this donation, every year some meritorious students of the thesis group of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of DU will be given the scholarship to conduct research.
Besides, one meritorious student will get the Ali Riaz Post-Graduate Research Prize for the best thesis work, said a media release.
Vice-Chancellor of DU Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman thanked the donor for his donation and hoped that the students of DU Mass Communication and Journalism Department will be highly encouraged to conduct research by this donation.
Dr Ali Riaz was a first batch honours student of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of DU.
He is also a former teacher of this department. He was Secretary of Literary Affairs of DUCSU in 1979 and 1982.
DU halls reopen for all students, but no more ‘gano rooms.’
The Dhaka University authorities on Sunday opened its residential halls for all students ahead of resuming in-person classes on October 17 after long Covid-induced closure.
Students of first, second and third years started arriving in the dormitories on Sunday.
Earlier on October 5, the authorities reopened the halls only for bachelor final year and master’s students.

The academic council of the university has decided to resume in-person classes on October 17.
Also on Sunday A.F. Rahman Hall and Bijay Ekattor hall authorities didn’t allow entry to new students who used to reside in ‘Gono Rooms’.
The students expressed anger as they came from different regions of the country with their belongings. They said that authorities did not inform them that they would not be allowed in the halls.
“We came after announcement that halls have been opened for all students. Now they are not allowing me in saying that ‘Gono rooms are no more’,” said a student attached to Bijay Ekattor Hall.
“Where shall I go now? My semester final exams will start from 17 October,” he added.
Sir A.F Rahman hall provost Prof Saiful Islam said, “We will not allow Gono rooms anymore. So we need some time to allocate seats for new students.”
According to the authorities, only regular students will be able to reside in the halls after getting at least one dose of Covid vaccine.

Most of the halls have installed at entrances hand washing basins and completed restoration and renovation works for welcoming the students.
According to the authorities, dining rooms, canteens, reading rooms and restrooms have already been cleaned in all halls.
Students have to enter their halls after showing their vaccination cards and valid university identity cards.
Conductor assaults DU female student on moving bus
A Dhaka University female student said on Friday she was thrashed on a moving public bus on her way home in the capital's Rampura area.
Rafia Tamanna, a final-year student of Mass Communication and Journalism department, said she filed a general diary with Rampura Police Station last night in this connection.
The student, also a journalist of The Business Standard, boarded a bus of "Torongo Plus" on Rampura road around 7:00pm on Thursday, according to the complaint.
Flowers & banners welcome students as DU reopens dorms
After nearly 18 months of Covid-forced closure, Dhaka University Tuesday morning welcomed back its residential students to the dormitories with flowers and banners.
Only vaccinated final-year honours and master’s students were allowed to check in, after production of valid documents and proof of at least a dose of a Covid vaccine.

UNB found students in a cheerful mood as they queued up to enter the residential halls, wearing face masks and adhering to other mandatory Covid-safety protocols like social distancing.
Inside halls, provosts were seen asking them to refrain from hanging out in groups or crowding a particular place.

Dhaka University on Monday launched vaccination campaign at its medical
centre, aiming to inoculate its teachers, students and staff.
The campaign was inaugurated around 9:30am with Sinopharm vaccine jabs, said the officials.
On the first day of the campaign, students, teachers and staffs of the university were seen
lining up at Martyred Intellectual Dr Muhammad Murtaza Medical Centre since morning to get jabbed.
DU ready to roll out its vaccination drive Monday
Dhaka University, the country’s oldest university, will launch its vaccination campaign on Monday at its medical centre, aiming to vaccinate its teachers, students and staff.
The university has already turned its Martyred Intellectual Dr Muhammad Murtaza Medical Centre into a temporary vaccination centre.
Officials said the campaign will be inaugurated at 9:30am and run till October 17 with Sinopharm vaccine jabs.
The vaccine seekers must bring their national identity cards (NIDs) or DU IDs to complete the on-the-spot registration.
The drive for the second dose was scheduled to begin on November 1.
Those who have already registered to receive the Covid-19 vaccine at centres under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), such as Dhaka Medical College Hospital, BSMMU, and Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute, may take the vaccine at the DU if they are yet to be vaccinated with any of the doses.

DU to serve notices to those who broke into dorms
Dhaka University authorities have decided to serve show-cause notices to the students who broke into its residential halls without any permission.
The decision was taken in an emergency meeting of the Dhaka University Provost Standing Committee on Saturday.
Show-cause notices will be served to the students asking why punitive measures should not be taken against those who broke into the halls and are staying there without prior permission, said a press release.

The students will have to reply to the notice by 7 October.
Besides, the hall authorities concerned have been asked to identify the students and submit a report within seven working days.
During visits to the halls, the UNB correspondent saw students staying there defying authorities’ decision.

The university authorities decided to reopen the halls for master's and honours final-year students on a limited scale from October 5 on condition of taking at least one dose of Covid-19 jab.
Dhaka University’s ‘Kha’ unit admission test held
The admission test of Dhaka University's 'Kha' unit for 2020-21 academic session was held on Saturday in all eight divisions of the country.
The total number of seats in this unit is 2,378. However, a total of 47,639 applicants participated in the test.
This year, the DU entry tests are being held outside Dhaka as well as at the university for the first time considering the pandemic situation.

Strict hygiene rules were maintained at all the venues of the divisional cities.
"The exam was held are in a peaceful environment," Dhaka University Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani told UNB.
DU Vice Chancellor Professor Akhtaruzzaman, pro VC (administration) prof Dr Samad, pro VC (administration) Prof Dr ASM Maksud Kamal visited the different exam centers in Dhaka.
The entry test of Dhaka University's 'Ka' unit was held on Friday peacefully in all eight divisions.

Ex-DU prof dies as train rams car in Gazipur
A retired Dhaka University professor was killed while his wife and driver were injured when a train hit their car at an unmanned level crossing in Kaliganj upazila of Gazipur on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Abdur Rahim Khan, 72, a resident of NAM Garden Officers Quarters in Mirpur.
The accident occurred around 6pm when the car in which the three were travelling fell into a roadside ditch after being hit by the Chattogram-bound Subarna Express in the Nalchata area.
The impact of the collision was such that Abdur died on the spot.

His wife Diljuara Khanam (63) and their driver Soleman Mia, 32, of Barishal district, sustained injuries and were rushed to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, from where they were shifted to Dhaka for better treatment, said Pradeep Kumar Saha, sub-inspector at Kaliganj Police Station.
The former DU professor and his wife were heading towards Dhaka’s Mirpur in their private car from Tangail district when the accident occurred.

His body has been sent to Narsingdi General Hospital morgue for an autopsy, the police officer said.
DU admission tests held for the first time in all divisional cities
Thousands of students on Friday sat for tests seeking admission to Dhaka University in the exams held for the first time in Dhaka and seven other divisional cities to avoid hassles and possible Covid-19 infections.
The 90-minute tests starting from 11am were held for ‘Ka’ unit for the 2020-21 academic session.
"The exams were held are in a peaceful manner and no untoward incident was reported," Dhaka University Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani told UNB.

"We have contacted the vice chancellors of universities in different divisions. They told us that the tests are going on smoothly. The students are following the health rules," DU Vice Chancellor Prof Akhtaruzzaman told a press briefing.
