26 rescued Bangladeshi fishermen return from India
Twenty-six Bangladeshi fishermen who were caught in a storm in the bay of Bengal and were rescued by Indian Coast Guard later returned to the country on Tuesday through Benapole check post.
All the fishermen are residents of Pirojpur and Barguna districts.
Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner in India, Sheikh Marefat Tarikul Islam, said the fishermen were under custody of Buddha Pur flood centre in Kakdwip and Moipith Shelter Home in India.

The fishermen returned on special travel permits and were handed over to Benapole port police station after immigration procedure in the afternoon, said Abul Kalam Azad, in charge of Benapole check post immigration.
From there a non-government organization named Justice and Care received them.
"The 26 fishermen will return to their families by today," said Muhit Hossain, senior programme officer of Justice and Care.

The fishermen had gone missing on August 18, as they went out to sea to catch hilsa and got caught in a storm.
They were rescued eventually by Indian Coast Guard, who took them in their custody for safety.
Indian woman dies from stroke at Benapole check post
A 51-year-old Indian woman died from a stroke while standing in a queue for international passengers at Benapole check post in Jashore on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Biplabi Das, wife of Rabitosh from Phoolbagan area in India’s West Bengal, said her nephew Shanto Chandra Dey.
The incident occurred around 10 am while Biplabi was standing at the exit side of the Benapole passenger terminal.

Shanto Chandra said they came to Bangladesh to visit some relatives and was standing in the line for a long time to complete the custom immigration work at the terminal to return to India.
At one point my aunt said she was feeling unwell and fell unconscious, he said.
When she was taken to Nabharan upazila health complex she was declared dead by the duty doctor, said Abul Kalam Azad, in charge officer of Benapole Checkpost immigration.
2 smugglers detained with gold worth over Tk 5cr in Benapole
Police on Monday detained two smugglers and seized 62 gold bars, weighing 7.025 kg from them along Sharsha border in Jashore district.
The detainees are Nayem Hossain, 40, and Azharul Islam, 35 - both residents of Sharsha upazila.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of police conducted a drive along the bordering area and detained them this evening while they were trying to smuggle the gold to India, said Additional SP of Navaron Circle Police, Jewel Imran.

Later, they were searched and the 62 gold bars were found on them.
The market value of the recovered gold is estimated to be around Tk 5.33 crore, the officer said.
More will be disclosed in the press conference tomorrow said ASP, adding that the case against the accused gold smugglers is under process.
Man held with 9 gold bars in Benapole
Customs Intelligence officials on Monday detained a man with nine gold bars weighing 1.44 kg from Benapole immigration checkpost.
The detainee was identified as Siddiqur Rahman, 45, of Barguna district.

Tipped off that a passenger was carrying gold bars to smuggle those to India, Customs intelligence personnel detained Siddiqur from the immigration area and seized the gold bars worth Tk 80 lakh, said Benapole Customs Detective Assistant Director Moniruzzaman Chowdhury.
The detainee was later handed over to Benapole Port police station, he added. A case has been filed in this regard.

BGB detains woman with gold worth over Tk 8 million in Benapole
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Sunday detained a woman and seized 10 gold bars, weighing 1.165 kg from her along Putkhali border in Jashore district.
The detainee is Ratna Begum, 34, wife of Md. Kamal Hossain of Putkhali Uttarpara village.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of BGB-21 conducted a drive along the bordering area and detained the woman around 9:30pm while trying to smuggle it to India, said Commanding Officer of 21 BGB Battalion Lt Col Tanvir Rahman.

Later, she was searched and the 10 gold bars were found on her.
The market value of the recovered gold is estimated to be around Tk 82.5 lakh, the officer said.
The woman was handed over to Benapole Port Police Station, he added.
Indian trucker killed in Benapole road crash
An Indian truck driver was killed after being hit by another truck in front of Benapole Port police station Sunday morning.
The deceased is identified as Shyam Sunder, 57, son of Teji Sunder of Mathura in Uttar Pradesh state of India.
Witnesses said the accident occurred around 8am when the speeding truck driven by helper Shilon knocked down Shyam while he was crossing the road in front of the police station, leaving him dead on the spot.
Police detained Md Shilon, son of Mizanur Rahman of Hakimpur village in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga.

Hossain Kamal Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of Benapole Port Police Station, said on information they recovered the body from the spot.
An unnatural death case was filed in this connection, he added.
13 fugitives arrested in Benapole
Police on Saturday claimed to have arrested thirteen fugitives wanted in drugs, arms and murder cases in Benapole.However, police didn't disclose the identities of the arrestees.Acting on a tip-off, a team of police conducted simultaneous drives in different areas of Benapole Port area all day on Saturday and arrested them, said Kamal Hossain Bhuiyan, OC of Benapole Port Police Station.

Smuggler held with 10 gold bars in Benapole
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Tuesday detained a man along with 10 gold bars weighing over one kg at Goga border in Benapole upazila of Jashore.
The detainee was identified as Sakib, a resident of the upazila.
Tipped off, a team of BGB-21 conducted a drive in the area and detained Sakib with the gold bars worth Tk 1 crore this morning, said commanding officer of BGB-21 Lieutenant Colonel Tanvir Ahmed.
A case was filed at Sharsha police station in this regard, the commanding officer said.
Benapole man held with Tk2 crore gold bars at border
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Saturday claimed to have detained a man with 20 gold bars worth over Tk2 crore at the Putkhali border in Jashore.
The detainee was identified as Md Hridoy Hossain from Benapole, Lieutenant Colonel Tanvir Ahmed, commanding officer of BGB-21, said.

Tipped off, a team of BGB-21 conducted a drive in the Putkhali area and detained Hridoy with the gold bars weighing 2.33kg while he was about to sneak into India, he added.
Legal action will be taken against Hridoy, the BGB commanding officer said.
Vishwakarma puja in India: Trade at Benapole port halted
Trade between Bangladesh and India via the Benapole land port remained suspended on Saturday, with the neighbouring country celebrating Vishwakarma puja.
However, movement of people via the land port remained as usual, officials said.
Kartik Chakrabarty, general secretary of the Petrapole C&F Agent Staff Welfare Association, said that trade between Bangladesh and India through Benapole-Petrapole land ports will resume on Sunday morning.

Abdul Jalil, deputy director (traffic) at the Benapole port, said that though transportation of goods between the two countries was suspended, loading and unloading of goods inside the port remained normal.
“We’ve kept our cargo department and checkposts open so that Indian trucks carrying Bangladeshi goods can return," said Abdur Rashid Mia, joint commissioner of Benapole Customs House.
