Brace for monsoon showers!
The weather department has predicted showers across Bangladesh in the next 24 hours, with monsoon being fairly active over the country and moderate to strong elsewhere over the North Bay.
“Light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty winds is likely to occur at many places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over the country,” the department said in its bulletin on Thursday morning.
Day and night temperatures may remain nearly unchanged over the country.

Rainfall activity may continue for the next two days, it added.
The weather office recorded the highest rainfall at 109mm in Cox’s Bazar in 24 hours till 6am on Thursday.
The highest temperature was recorded at 35.2 degrees Celsius in Ishwardi of Rajshahi division, while the lowest temperature was recorded at 25 degrees in Sitakunda of Chattogram division.
The monsoon trough runs through Panjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal to Assam across central parts of Bangladesh, as per the bulletin.
One of its associated troughs extends up to the Northeast Bay, it added.

With monsoon still being active over Bangladesh, the weather department has predicted light to moderate showers in parts of the country in the next 24 hours.
“Light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty winds is likely to occur at many places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at isolated places over the country,” the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said in its bulletin on Thursday.

The weather office recorded the highest rainfall at 57mm in Tetulia of Rangpur division in 24 hours till 6am on Thursday.
The highest temperature was recorded at 36.4 degrees Celsius in Ishwardi, while the lowest temperature was recorded at 24.5 degree in Nikli and Tetulia.
The axis of monsoon trough runs through Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal to Assam across central parts of Bangladesh. One of its associated troughs extends upto the Northwest Bay, it added.
Heat wave likely to prevail two more days, says weather expert
Monsoon means the season of heavy downpour for days together.
But this year’s monsoon is largely dry with a heat wave sweeping across the country
Generally, the monsoon in Bangladesh prevails from early June to mid-October but by mid-July this year the country has been gasping in scorching heat for the past two weeks.
This unusual heat wave during monsoon is likely to prevail for two more days after which there is a possibility of rainfall, Mohammad Omar Faruk, a meteorologist of Bangladesh Meteorological Department told UNB.
“Every year in July, a low pressure area is formed over the Bay of Bengal, which is the reason behind rains during monsoon but this year it is less active,” he said.
The highest temperature of the month was recorded at 39 degree Celsius in Syedpur of Nilphamari district on July 15.

In 2018, Bangladesh experienced a moderate heat wave on July 19 and July 20. The heat wave had returned this time in 2022, said Faruk.
According to the Met office bulletin, in the next 24 hours commencing at 9 am on Sunday, a mild heat wave will be sweeping over Rajshahi, Rangpur and Sylhet divisions and Tangail, Jashore and Chuadanga districts and it may continue.
“However, light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at a few places over Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, Rangpur and Sylhet divisions and at one or two places over Dhaka, Rajshahi and Mymensingh divisions with moderately heavy falls at isolated places over the country,” it said.

The low pressure area over Northwest Bay and adjoining Odisha-West Bengal coast persists.
Monsoon trough runs through Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, the centre of the low and thence Northeastwards to Assam across southern part of Bangladesh.
Monsoon is fairly active over Bangladesh and moderate elsewhere over North Bay.
The highest temperature was recorded 38.0 Celsius in Syedpur while lowest temperature was recorded 25.1 Celsius in Sylhet.
According to the weather office, the average rainfall in the last month was normal.
Besides, the Met office sources said there is possibility of a little rain than normal in July month.
During this month, there will be one or two low pressures over the Bay and of these, one will turned into depression, said Met office at meeting held on July 3 virtually.
Besides, a light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur in north, north-east region in 1-2 day while light rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur in two-three days across the country, it said.
Mild heat wave sweeping over parts of country
A mild heat wave is sweeping over different parts of the country including Dhaka, said Bangladesh Metrological Department (BMD).
“A mild heat wave is sweeping over Rajshahi and Sylhet divisions and Dhaka, Tangail, Rangpur, Dinajpur and Nilphamari districts and it may continue,” it said.
Besides, light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at a few places over Dhaka, Mymensingh, Rangpur, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet, divisions and at one or two places over Rajshahi division with moderately heavy falls at isolated places over the country.
Meanwhile, the well-marked low over Odisha and adjoining area weekend into a low pressure area and lies over the same area.

The country’s highest temperature was recorded 38.2 degrees Celsius in Rajshahi while the lowest temperature was recorded 25.0 degrees Celsius at Hatiya in Noakhali.
UNB Sylhet Correspondent reports: the normal life of people has been disrupted due to the scorching heat as a mild heat wave is sweeping the district.
People are staying indoors due to the sweltering heat.
Besides, power cut in many parts of the district has intensified the woes of people.
The local Weather Observatory Centre said they have recorded highest temperature 37.2 degrees Celsius in Sylhet on Thursday and it may rise further.
Syed Ahmed, senior meteorologist of Sylhet Weather Observatory Centre, said the mild heat wave has been sweeping the district since Sunday, the Eid Day and only rains can bring relief.
He also said that rains are expected at the end of this week and the temperature may fall from Saturday, he said.
Light to moderate rains are likely in the city and other parts of the district on Saturday.
12,000 families in Cox’s Bazar living with imminent risk of landslides
“I am forced to live with the risk of death from a landslide in the foothill. where else a day laborer like me would lie down after work?” said Ariful Islam, a resident of Lighthouse area in Cox’s Bazar.
Like Ariful there are at least 12,000 families who are living on the sloping foothills, with an elevated risk of landslide, according to Cox’s Bazar Forest and Environment Conservation Council. Given the average family size in Bangladesh, that could mean around 50,000 people at risk.
Cox’s Bazar, a highly landslide-prone zone of the country where every year casualties are reported from this disaster during the monsoon season (June–September) triggered by heavy rains.

More rains to drench Bangladesh
More rains are likely to cool off Bangladesh in the next 24 hours, the weather department said Saturday.
Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind and intense lightning flashes is likely to occur at most places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over the country, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
The weather department recorded 282mm rainfall – the highest – in Sylhet in the last 24 hours till 6pm Saturday.

The mercury reached 34.5 degrees Celsius – the highest – in Rajshahi's Tarash, while the minimum temperature was 22 degrees in Chattogram's Sitakunda.
