Suicide Prevention: How to Deal with Suicidal Thoughts?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Global Burden of Disease, every year, approximately 800,000 people die from suicide, which is one person every 40 seconds. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds, and it is the tenth leading cause of death for all age groups worldwide. The goal should be not just to prevent suicide but also to reduce the number of thoughts that lead to it. People struggling with suicidal thoughts often feel hopeless, depressed or want to hurt themselves or others. Let's discuss some ways to deal with suicidal thoughts.
Why Do Suicidal Thoughts Come to Mind?
The reasons why suicidal thoughts may come to mind are complex and varied but can generally be broken down into two broad categories:
1) factors that may trigger suicidal thoughts in someone who is already vulnerable, and
2) factors that may increase the likelihood of someone committing suicide.
Some common triggers for suicidal thoughts can include feeling isolated, hopeless, and desperate; experiencing significant emotional or physical pain; witnessing or experiencing violence or abuse; feeling like a burden to others; having a history of mental health issues; experiencing a loss or significant change in one's life; having a recent traumatic event, or being in a stressful environment.
If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts, it is important to overcome the suicidal thoughts as soon as possible.

8 Effective Ways to Cope with Suicidal Thoughts
If the sheer thought of living a single day seems unbearable, it might be time to start taking steps to overcome suicidal thoughts. This can be a frightening thing to do, but with some help and support from family and friends, you will find that life does indeed go on. Consider following ways to start dealing with your suicidal thoughts.
Speak with a therapist
If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts, it is important to speak with a therapist. A therapist can help you work through your thoughts and feelings and can provide support. They can also provide guidance on how to deal with suicidal thoughts. If you don't have a therapist, you can search for one online.
Reach out to loved ones
It can be difficult to talk about suicidal thoughts, but it can be very helpful to reach out to loved ones. Talking with them about how you are feeling can help them understand what you are going through and provide support. They may be able to offer insights or suggestions on how to deal with the thoughts. It's also important to let them know if you have any plans or have already attempted suicide. This allows them to be on the lookout for warning signs and take steps to ensure your safety.

Join a support group
When struggling with suicidal thoughts, it can be incredibly helpful to join a support group. In these groups, people can share their stories and provide support to one another. This can be an incredibly helpful way to cope with suicidal thoughts, as it provides a sense of community and understanding. Additionally, these groups can often provide helpful resources and information.
Exercise
One of the benefits of exercise is that it can help improve mood and well-being. Exercise releases endorphins hormones that can eventually improve mood. Exercise can also help to distract from suicidal thoughts. When someone is focusing on completing a goal, such as running a marathon, they are less likely to focus on negative thoughts. Exercise can also provide a sense of accomplishment, which can be beneficial for people who are struggling with suicidal thoughts.
Eat healthy
People who eat a healthy diet have been shown to have better moods and overall well-being than those who do not. This is likely due to the fact that healthy foods contain important nutrients that are necessary for optimal mental health. Some of these nutrients include omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, and B vitamins.

Making a few simple changes to your diet can go a long way in improving your mood and overall well-being. Start by adding in some healthy foods and eliminating unhealthy ones.
Get enough sleep
It is no secret that sleep is important. What may be a secret, however, is the importance of getting enough sleep for those struggling with suicidal thoughts. Sleep deprivation can aggravate mood swings and contribute to feelings of hopelessness. It can also lead to poor judgment and decision-making. In short, getting enough sleep is important for physical and mental well-being.
For someone struggling with suicidal thoughts, getting enough sleep can be a critical distraction. It can provide a much-needed break from obsessive thoughts and negative emotions. It can also help to restore balance and perspective. When feeling overwhelmed by suicidal thoughts, taking some time for rest and rejuvenation can make all the difference.

Another DU student chooses the dark path of suicide
Another student of Dhaka University allegedly killed himself early Monday at his own home at Madhupur upazila in Tangail.
The deceased was Pritom Kumar Singho Akash, a student of department of ceramics of DU's Fine Arts faculty of 2016-17 session.
One of his friends, quoting family members, told UNB that around 1am on Monday, hearing what sounded like moaning from his room, they went to check on Pritom but he ousted them and locked the room from inside.
As his condition worsened he eventually told his family that he had gulped down some rat poison, according to the friend who didn't want to disclose his name.
Later, he was taken to the Upazila general hospital. After receiving primary treatment there, he was referred to Mymensingh Medical college at around 3am, according to his family.
It was on the way to Mymensingh that all the life in him gave away, and he breathed his last.
Pritom's death adds to the alarming trend of suicides spiking alarmigly among tertiary students during the Covid-19 pandemic, as revealed in a recent report by the non-profit Aachol Foundation.
According to Aachol, at least 101 students at tertiary level died by suicide last year, while the number was 79 in 2020.
In order to put those numbers in their proper context, compare them with the corresponding numbers from the years prior to the pandemic: just 11 tertiary-level students died by suicide in 2018, and 19 in 2017 (no reliable figure exists for 2019, Aachol said). The steepness of the climb during the Covid years makes it difficult to escape the conclusion that the pandemic did have some effect on these students.
The highest number of suicides were recorded among Dhaka University students, who accounted for nine students while Jagannath University and Shahjalal University of Science and Technology had recorded six suicide cases each, the report added.

Pritom was buried at the graveyard of his village and the reason for his death could not be confirmed by any official sources.

On the other hand, Tanmoy Mondol, another friend, wrote that: we talked with his family and neighbors, he he did not commit suicide for the marriage of his loved one. He had been in depression since few days."
DU proctor prof. AKM Golam Rabbani said, "We contacted Pritom's family members. There might have been love affair related reasons behind this."

Dhanmondi Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ikram Ali Mia told the media that Abu Mohsin committed suicide with his own licensed gun at his residence.
Abu Mohsin Khan was a businessman by his profession. During that Facebook Live, he talked about his loneliness and several other miseries of his life.
“I am 58 years old, and at one point in my life, I was a very good businessman. I am currently suffering from cancer. So now I have no business or anything else. The purpose of coming live today is to share my experience with you. You may learn a lot from this experience, and I want you to be careful,” Abu Mohsin Khan said during that live video.
He continued, “My aunt has recently passed away on January 30th. She had a son who lives outside of the country, but did not return after receiving the news of his mother's death. This incident has moved me and made me very sad, as I also have a son who lives in Australia, and I am also currently living completely alone in my house."
“I have been scared since the demise of my aunt. I have a feeling that if I die in my house, I don't think anyone would know in a week. Altogether these are the reasons behind this live video,” he added.
Mohsin then said, “The lion's share of what parents earn is spent on their children. Real parents try to feed their children without having food for themselves, try to give their everything to the family. However, sometimes the family members do not want to understand the sacrifice. I am not being able to adjust myself to these situations anymore. This is my last meeting with those who are watching.”

Suicide bomber attacks bar in eastern Congo, killing 6
A suicide bomber attacked a restaurant and bar Saturday as patrons gathered on Christmas Day, killing at least six others in an eastern Congolese town where Islamic extremists are known to be active.
Heavy gunfire rang out shortly after the bomb went off, with panicked crowds fleeing the town’s center.
Saturday’s attack marked the first known time that a suicide bomber has killed victims in eastern Congo, where an Islamic State group affiliate earlier this year took responsibility for a suicide bombing near another bar in Beni who had caused no other casualties.
The latest violence only deepens fear that religious extremism has taken hold in a region already plagued for years by rebels.
Gen. Sylvain Ekenge, spokesperson for the governor of North Kivu, said that security guards had blocked the bomber from entering the crowded bar and so the person instead detonated the explosives at the entrance.
“We call on people to remain vigilant and to avoid crowded areas during the holiday season,” he said in a statement. “In the city and territory of Beni, it is difficult, in these times to know who is who.”

Rachel Magali had been at the restaurant-bar for about three hours with her sister-in-law and several others when she heard a loud noise outside.
“Suddenly we saw black smoke surrounding the bar and people started to cry,” she told The Associated Press. “We rushed to the exit where I saw people lying down. There were green plastic chairs scattered everywhere and I also saw heads and arms no longer attached. It was really horrible.”
Among the dead were two children, according to Mayor Narcisse Muteba, who is also a police colonel. At least 13 other people were wounded and taken to a local hospital.
“Investigations are underway to find the perpetrators of this terrorist attack,” he told The Associated Press.
The town has long been targeted by rebels from the Allied Democratic Forces, or ADF, a group that traces its origins to neighboring Uganda. But in June the Islamic State group’s Central Africa Province said it was behind the suicide bomber and another explosion that same day at a Catholic church that wounded two people.

Residents of the town have repeatedly expressed anger over the ongoing insecurity despite an army offensive and the presence of U.N. peacekeepers in Beni. From 2018 to 2020, the town also suffered through an Ebola epidemic that became the second deadliest in history. More than 2,200 people died in eastern Congo as vaccination efforts were at times thwarted by insecurity in the area.
