10 held by BGB for 'illegally entry'
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Tuesday claimed to have detained 10 people while they were entering the country illegally from India via Moheshpur border in Jhenaidah on Monday.
All the detainees claimed to be Bangladeshi nationals, BGB officials said.

A patrol team of BGB-58 conducted a drive in the area and detained them, said Md Saiful Islam, assistant director of the unit.
"They were held while entering the country from India without valid documents."

Later, the detainees were handed over to the Moheshpur police station. A case has been filed in this regard, Saiful added.
Drug peddler held with Crystal meth, Yaba pills in Teknaf
Members of Border Guard (BGB) detained a drug peddler with 1.06kg of crystal methamphetamine (crystal meth or ice) and 10,000 of Yaba pills from Teknaf in the early hours of Monday.
The detainee was Md. Saker Ali,22, son of late Kalu Mia of 25 Mochni Myanmar Citizens Camp, Block-B of Teknaf.

According to a media release of BGB, tipped off, a patrol team of BGB-2, detained Saker conducting a drive at Omarkhal area under Domdomia BOP in Teknaf around 12:15 am.
During the drive, the BGB men seized 1.06kgs of crystal methamphetamine (crystal meth or ice) and 10,000 pcs of Yaba pills worth Tk 5.60 crore from his possession, said the release.
BGB seizes drugs worth Tk 5.58 crore from Teknaf
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered 1.05kg crystal meth, 10,000 pieces Yaba and 142 cans of Andaman Gold Beer, with a street value of Tk 5.58 crore, in a drive at Teknaf Upazila in Cox’s Bazar, said a media release on Monday.
A special patrol team of BGB-2 under Sabrang BOP, was patrolling on the banks of the Naf River near the perimeter of Jinnah Khal Salam Member on Sunday night.
The patrol team took a strategic position after hearing the footsteps of some people in the Keora garden around 4am and challenged 3 people.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the suspected smugglers abandoned three sacks and fled into the deep jungle.
Later, the patrol team recovered the drugs from the sack they left at the spot.
Legal steps are being taken in this regard, said the release.

Huge amount of yaba pills seized in Cox's Bazar
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Friday detained five drug peddlers and seized 6,90,000 yaba pills from Ukhiya upazila of Cox's Bazar.
The detainees are Mahbub, 30, son of the late Kabir Ahmed of Jaliapalang Pineashia Charpara area, Iqbal Hossain's wife Sufia Sultana Sumi ,26, Ali Ahmed's wife Fatema Begum ,65, Md. Rafiq Ullah, son of Md. Kalu Mia of Chakbaitha West Dighinala and Md Rafiq Alam.
Acting on a tip-off, a patrol team of BGB-34 conducted a drive at Iqbal Hossain’s house in the Koroibunia area around Friday at midnight and detained four of them with 50,000 yaba pills, said a media release of BGB.
Based on their information, the law enforcers conducted another drive at the Rujupara area and seized 6 lakh more yaba tablets, said the release.
Later BGB men arrested Rafiq Alam with 40,000 pcs of yaba from Gorjonbunia border.
4 drug peddlers held with 50,755 yaba pills in Cox's Bazar
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Thursday detained drug peddlers with 50,755 yaba pills worth Tk 1.50 crore from Ukhiya of Cox's Bazar.
The detainees were identified as Md Shahjahan, 41, Md Ekramul Hossain, 25, Md Dabir Ahmed, 28 and Md Yeasin, 21.

According to a media release of BGB, a patrol team of BGB-34, tipped off, detained Shahjahan and Ekramul conducting a drive at Pangkhali UP in Ukhiya in the morning.
During the drive, BGB men seized 50,000 yaba pills worth Tk 1.50 crore from their possession, said the release.

In another drive at Rejukhal post, the BGB men nabbed the other two drug peddlers with 755 yaba pills in a battery-run auto rickshaw.
Legal processes are underway against the detainees, the release added.
BGB seizes smuggled goods worth Tk 118 cr in March
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized different types of smuggled goods including arms and drugs worth Tk 118.11 crore in anti-smuggling drives across the country in March this year.
Sources at the BGB headquarters said the seized drugs include 13,41,023 Yaba pills, 5.044 kg crystal meth also known as ice, 3.513 kg heroin (brown sugar), 1.275 kg opium, 38,637 bottles of Phensidyl, 17492 bottles of foreign liquor, 2595 cans of beer, 2744 kgs of hemp, 53,322 stimulant injections, 21,505 pieces of Anegra and Senegra tablets, 4,591 Eascof syrup and 3,74,568 other tablets during the period between March 1 and March 31.

Other smuggled goods include 1.173 kg gold, 20 kg silver, 4, 35,530 cosmetics items, 2,513 imitation jewellery, 11,730 sarees, 2 ,213 three-piece sets, blanket and shirt pieces, 1345 pieces readymade garments, 3,492 cubic feet of timber, 9,424 kgs of tea, 33,930 kgs of coal, one touch stone idol, six trucks/covered vans, four private cars/microbuses, eight pickup vans, 35 CNG and engine driven auto-rickshaws and 71 motorcycles.
The seized arms included one pistol, two guns, 16 rounds of bullets and one magazine.
Besides, legal action has been taken against 374 smugglers and six Indians for illegally crossing the border during the period, said Public Relations Officer of the BGB headquarters Md Shariful Islam.
BGB seizes Yaba worth Tk 5.1 crore from Cox's Bazar
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered 170,000 pieces of Burmese Yaba, with a street value of Tk 5.1 crore, in separate drives at Ukhiya Upazila in Cox’s Bazar, said a media release on Friday.
The illegal drug was being smuggled to Bangladesh from Myanmar through Lal Boro pahar area on Thursday night, added the release.

Tipped off, a patrol team of BGB-34 under Rejupara BOP, conducted a drive in the area around 9pm and challenged some people.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the suspected smugglers abandoned a bag and fled into the deep jungle.
Later, the patrol team recovered 150,000 Yaba pills worth from the bag they left at the spot.

Meanwhile, another special patrol team of Palong Khali BOP, conducted a drive around 3am in the East Farirbil area and recovered 20,000 abandoned yaba pills worth Tk 60 lakh, said the release.
Legal steps will be taken in this regard, added the release.
Shakil Ahmed takes over as new BGB chief
Major General Shakil Ahmed, a seasoned Army officer, has taken over the reins of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
Major General Ahmed took over the coveted responsibility of BGB director general from the force's acting head, Major General Md Shafeenul Islam, at the Philkhana headquarters in Dhaka on Monday, said Md Shariful Islam, PRO, BGB HQ.

Major General Ahmed previously served as the Adjutant General of the Bangladesh Army at the Army Headquarters in Dhaka.
He also served as the GOC 19th Infantry Division, Commander of the 99 Composite Brigade and Commander of the 1st East Bengal Regiment. He also served as the director general of the Bangladesh Passport and Immigration Department.
Major General Ahmed was commissioned on 24 June, 1988, in the Corps of Infantry, after completing the mandatory course at the Bangladesh Military Academy.

BGB recovers Tk 3 crore worth Burmese yaba in Cox’s Bazar
Border Guard Bangladesh Cox’s Bazar battalion (BGB 34)recovered 1 lakh pieces of Burmese yaba worth Tk 3 crore on Monday.
The recovery was made from Goldebar Pahar area of Ukhia upazila during a drive, said BGB 34 in a press release.

Following a tip off, a BGB-34 patrol team took position in the area and challenged the smugglers while passing the border with Myanmar. The smugglers fled from the spot leaving a bag after an exchange of fire with the patrol team, said BGB 34.
The drugs were recovered from the bag later.

Nation pays tribute to Pilkhana martyrs
The 13th anniversary of the brutal carnage at the Pilkhana BDR (now BGB) headquarters in the capital is being observed on Friday.
A total of 74 people, including 57 Army officers, were killed in the massacre beginning on this day in 2009.
Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) has organised Quran Khawani, doa, and milad mahfil, marking the day.
Major General S M Salahuddin Islam, Military Secretary to the President, and Major General Nakib Ahmed, Military Secretary to the Prime Minister, placed floral wreaths at the graves of the slain Army officers at the Military Graveyard in the capital's Banani area on behalf of the President and the PM, respectively, the government said in a release.

Besides, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, chiefs of the three services -- Chief of Army Staff General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M Shaheen Iqbal and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Shaikh Abdul Hannan, -- and Director General of BGB Major General Md Shafeenul Islam also paid their tributes to the slain Army officers.
They also stood in solemn silence for a while.
During the day, family members and relatives of the slain officers also paid their tributes to the slain Army officers.
BGB flags are being flown at half-mast at all Border Guards Bangladesh installations and all BGB members are wearing black badges to mark the day.
A special prayer and milad mahfil will be held on Friday after Juma prayers at BGB Central Mosque, Dhaka Sector Mosque and Border Guard Hospital Mosque at Pilkhana to seek salvation of the departed souls. Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan will be present as the chief guest at the BGB Central Mosque.

On February 25, 2009, several hundred Bangladesh Rifles (now BGB) men staged an armed revolt at the Darbar Hall of the force's Pilkhana headquarters during the three-day "BDR Week". They killed 74 people, including 57 Army officers.
The mutiny finally ended the following day (Feb 26) with the surrender of firearms, ammunition and grenades through a negotiation between the then government and the BDR rebels.
A total of 58 cases, including one for murder and looting, and the remaining for mutiny were filed in connection with the mutiny.
Some 152 people were sentenced to death and 423 others to different jail terms in the killing case. Besides, 277 were acquitted in the country’s largest-ever killing case.
Among the convicts, 262 mutineers were sentenced to different jail terms ranging from three months to 19 years, and 161 people, including late BNP leader Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu and local Awami League leader Torab Ali, were jailed for life.
On the other hand, 5,926 BDR personnel were sentenced to different jail terms ranging from four months to seven years in the 57 mutiny cases.
