Fire at Dhaka’s New Supermarket now under control
A fire that broke out at Dhaka’s New Supermarket — next to New Market — early today, has been brought under control.
The blaze was brought under control around 9:10 am, said Shahjahan Sikder, deputy assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters media cell.
Members of law enforcement agencies are assisting traders in evacuating the establishment with their goods.
A total of 28 firefighting units and teams of Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force are working to douse the blaze.

Huge haul of drugs busted at Chapainawabganj border: BGB
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) say they have recovered 28,000 yaba pills, 1 kg heroin, and 77 bottles of Phensedyl from the Chapainawabganj border area.
The drugs were seized during raids at Chakpara, Telkupi and Azmatpur border areas under Shibganj upazila, according to a press release sent by 59 BGB Battalion this morning.
Acting on a tip-off, a BGB patrol team led by Lt Col Golam Kibria, commander of 59 BGB battalion, raided the border areas last night. At that time, the yaba pills, heroin, and Phensedyl were recovered while no one was around, said the release.
According to the press release, special patrols of BGB are being conducted in the border areas to implement a zero-tolerance policy against drugs announced by the prime minister and the BGB director general.
Due to BGB initiative, after 4 decades Bangladesh gets back 1 acre of disputed land on Naogaon border
After four decades, Bangladesh got back about one acre of disputed land on Naogaon border, thanks to the initiative of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
India’s Border Security Force (BSF) has been obstructing Bangladeshi farmers since 1977 from cultivating around one acre of land — located at Ramchandrapur under Dhamoirhat upazila of Naogaon district, inside Bangladesh territory, some 100 yards from border pillar 257/20-R.
The disputed area is under the jurisdiction of Agradigun BOP of BGB Patnitala Battalion (14 BGB).

A flag meeting was held between BGB and BSF at the battalion commander level on the call of Patnitala Battalion (14 BGB) near border pillar 257/20-R from 11 am to 1:15 pm (Bangladesh time) today.
At the flag meeting, Patnitala Battalion (14 BGB) Commanding Officer Lt. Col Md. Hamid Uddin led an 8-member BGB member delegation, while Commandant of India's Patiram battalion (164 BSF Battalion) Sanjay Kumar Mishra led a 6-member BSF delegation.
Clash over Ahmadiyya event: Law enforcers on high alert to avoid further trouble in Panchagarh
Members of the law enforcement agencies including Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been patrolling the Sadar upazila of the district on Saturday to ward off further trouble, a day after the violence over an Ahmadiyya religious event that left 2 people and dozens injured.
Though the law enforcers are on high alert, a tense situation has been prevailing in the area.
Md AbdulLatif Miah, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station, said the law enforcers have been deployed at several points to avoid further disturbance.
The bodies of the deceased were handed over to their families without autopsies following the request by their relatives around 1pm, he said.

The Ahmidyya community will hold a press conference over the issue at Salana Jalsa village at 3pm, the OC said, adding that security were beefed up.
He also said that neither any case has so far been lodged in this connection nor anyone has been arrested.
The Ahmadiyya devotees, who gathered at the Salana village to attend their scheduled event,were seen going back to their respective destinations on Saturday morning after the event was suspended for an indefinite period on Friday night.
Two men were killed and at least 50 people sustained injuries in the clash of a section of Muslim devotees and police demanding the closure of a Qadiani Salana Jalsa in Panchagarh town on Friday
After the Jummah prayers, devotees gathered from some mosques in Panchagarh municipality area and started a protest march.
Then they went to Panchagarh town staging an agitation there. At one point they marched towards the Qadianis Jalsa in the Ahmed Nagar area.
As police stopped the procession at Panchagarh Chowrangi intersection, the protesters became angry and started throwing brickbats at the police in the city's cinema hall road area.
Police had to move back at one point due to the protest procession. At least 30 people were injured.
Shops in Panchagarh town closed as the violence spread panic among the people.
The angry mob also looted around 20 houses of the Qadianis located in Ahmednagar.
BGB recovers 60 gold bars worth almost Tk 9-cr in Jashore
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered a large haul of gold amounting to almost 9kg, distributed equally in 60 bars, from the Rajarhat area in Jashore on Tuesday.
A BGB press release signed by Lieutenant Colonel Shahed Minhaj Siddique, a commandant of the BGB-49 in Jashore, said they came to know that a white microbus carrying a consignment of gold was heading to Jashore from the capital, with the aim to smuggle the illegal consignment to India through the border.
Two teams from Khulna and Jashore-BGB battalions took positions in separate spots to detain the microbus.
After a chase by Khulna BGB, the microbus entered Jashore while another team also chased it.
The microbus fell into a roadside ditch after the driver lost control over the steering being chased by the BGB members, it said.
The driver, however, managed to flee from the vehicle before the arrival of the frontier forces.
Later, a total of 60 gold bars weighing around 8.974 kilograms was recovered from the vehicle, the release said.
The market price of the seized gold was estimated over Tk 8.97 crore and those were submitted to exchequers through Sadar police station.
A process is underway to file a case in this connection, the BGB release added.
BGB DG Nazmul Hasan visits Tin Bigha Corridor, Angarpota-Dahagram border
Major General AKM Nazmul Hasan, director general of Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB) on Saturday visited Tin Bigha Corridor, Angarpota-Dahagram and Panbari border areas in Patgram of Lalmonirhat.
He visited BGB's Rangpur Region headquarters and Rangpur Battalion as part of his inspection of operational, training and administrative activities of various units of BGB, said Md Shariful Islam, public relation officer (PRO) of the BGB headquarters.
At that time, he also planted trees there, he added.
Later, he visited Tin Bigha Corridor where a team of Indian Border Security Force (BSF) gave a guard of honor to him. He exchanged greetings with the BSF members.
In addition, he visited Angarpota-Dahagram and Panbari border areas and talked to the local public representatives and inquired about the common people.
The BGB director general also exchanged greetings with the BGB members on duty at the border and provided guidance on various operational, training and administrative issues.
On his way back, he also visited Teesta Battalion and Teesta Barrage areas.
During his visit, senior BGB officers, battalion captain and other officers were also present, added Shariful.
BGB recovers six Indian air guns along Chuadanga border
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered six Indian air guns left behind by a duo who crossed over from India along the border in Chuadanga on Tuesday night. However as soon as they sensed the BGB's presence, they turned back towards the border, and presumably managed to cross over.
Shah Md Ishtiak, director of BGB-6 based in Chuadanga, said a team of the frontier battalion took position along the border on information that a consignment of arms was coming to Bangladesh from India through the border.
Faruk Hossain, commandant of the Phulbari BOP, said at one point two people carrying two cartons entered Bangladesh territory from India near pillar No 86.

Sensing the presence of BGB, they immediately fled through a field of maize leaving the cartons behind, Commandant Faruk said.
Later, the six firearms were recovered from the cartons the duo left behind, the BGB officer said, adding that a case was filed at the concerned police station in this connection.
Smuggled drugs, other goods worth over Tk 1,565 cr seized in 2022: BGB
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has said they seized smuggled goods, arms and drugs worth over Tk1,565 crore in various drives across the country last year.
In 2021, smuggled goods and drugs worth Tk 1073 crore were seized by BGB.
The smuggled goods seized last year included 1,27,78,100 Yaba pills, 77.690kg crystal meth, 316,157 bottles of phensidyl, 182,932 bottles of foreign liquor, 4,064 litres of local wine, 37,126 beer cans, 28,672kg cannabis, 72.159kg heroin, 4,98,754 stimulating injections, 6,55,940 Senegra tablets, 76,561 Eskuf syrups, 13.425kg Opium (afim), 13,562 bottles of Cofidil, 84,55,562 different types of medicines and 28,10,063 other drugs, Shariful Islam, public relations officer of the BGB headquarters, said Tuesday.

Also, 194.993kg gold, 279.162kg silver, 31 touchstone statues, 2,155,094 cosmetics, 1,57,309 sarees, 59,939 3pcs/shirts pcs, 21,068 readymade garments, 30,695 cubic feet of timber, 73,176kg tea leaves, 6,21,013kg coal, 35,223 cubic feet stone, 1,25,750 imitation ornaments, 1,699kg current net, 152,5kg turtle bone, 73 trucks/covered van, 44 private cars/microbuses, 106 pickup trucks, 340 CNG/battery run auto-rickshaws and 824 motorcycles were seized.
Forty-six pistols, nine rifles, five revolvers, 79 different types of guns, 25 magazines, 24 mortar shells, 5,345 rounds of bullets, 1 rocket bomb, 20 cocktails, 51 empty shells and 999.60kg of explosive-like materials were among the seized arms and ammunition.
Besides, legal actions were taken against 2,953 people smugglers during this period.
Some 2,085 Bangladeshis and 117 Indian nationals were arrested for crossing the border illegally, Shariful said.
BGB man kills himself with service weapon in Satkhira
A Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel apparently ended his life by shooting himself with his service weapon at a camp in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira early Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Lance Naik Parvez Alam, 30. He hailed from Noakhali and was posted at the BGB camp in Nildumur.

Other BGB members at the camp rushed severely injured Parvez to Shyamnagar Upazila Health Complex around 4:30am.
He died on the way to another hospital, said Nurul Islam Badal, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shyamnagar police station.
The body was handed over to the BGB officials after an autopsy at Satkhira Sadar Hospital, said the OC.
Dr Ahmed Ali and Dr Tamim Hossain, physicians of Satkhira Sadar Hospital, said that Parvez died due to the bullet injury on the left side of his chest.

An unnatural death case was filed in this regard, the OC added.
BGB seizes drugs worth Tk5.6cr in Cox's Bazar
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) said they seized banned drugs worth nearly Tk5.62 crore from Cox's Bazar's Teknaf upazila Sunday night.
Lieutenant Colonel Sheikh Khalid Mohammad Iftekhar, commanding officer of BGB-2 Battalion, today said they seized 1.65kg crystal methamphetamine and 10,000 yaba pills from the Kharangkhali area near the embankment along the River Naf.

Tipped off, two patrol teams of BGB conducted a raid at Kharangkhali at midnight. At that time, a man who was trying to cross into Bangladesh from Myanmar took to his heels after seeing them.
Later the BGB teams found the crystal meth and yaba pills wrapped in a cloth at the spot.
Although the BGB men were hot on the trail of potential drug smugglers, they could not detain anyone in connection with the seizure of the illegal drugs, Iftekhar said.
