Female doc's death: Ctg rickshaw-puller arrested
Police on Thursday arrested the puller of the ill-fated rickshaw that was hit by a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Tuesday night, resulting in the death of a female doctor in the port city.
Dr Samina Akter, a mother of two children and a doctor at Southern Medical College and Hospital, succumbed to her injuries at Chattogram Medical College and Hospital after battling for her life for nearly two days.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) nabbed Mohammad Hridoy, 19, son of Md Nasir Uddin of Cumilla district, around 9pm on Thursday from the Old Station Road area of the port city after CCTV footage of the accident went viral on social media.

“From the CCTV footage, it appeared that the accident occurred due to the reckless driving of the auto driver and the rickshaw puller’s negligence,” said Md Nezam Uddin, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station.
The accident occurred in the city's Kazir Dewri area when Dr Samina was returning home. She later underwent a surgery at Chattogram Medical College and Hospital as she had sustained severe head injuries and a chest bone fracture.

"The auto-rickshaw driver, named Siddique, was arrested immediately after the accident on Tuesday," the OC said.
Female physician injured in Ctg road crash dies
A female doctor who sustained injuries in a road crash at Kazir Dewri in Chattogram on Tuesday succumbed to her injuries on Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Dr Samina Akter, mother of two children and she used to work at the Intensive Care Unit(ICU) of Bangabandhu Memorial Hospital of the city.

Dr Samina died at the ICU of Chattogram Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) around 9:30am, said Md Nezam Uddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station.
OC Nezam said Dr Samina was injured after being hit by a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in the city's Kazir Dewri area on Tuesday night when she was returning home by a rickshaw.
She was rushed to CMCH in a critical condition, said the OC.
She underwent a surgery on her head as she had a severe head injury and the chest bone was broken.
Engineer killed, 4 hurt in Chattogram road crash
An engineer was killed and four people were injured as a CNG-run autorickshaw and a three-wheeler collided in Raozan upazila’s Kaptai Road on Wednesday afternoon.
Deceased Papon Barua Shakil, 41, was the senior engineer (mechanical) of PHP Group and office secretary of Chattogram Diploma Engineers Association. He lived with his family in Mohammadpur residential area of the city.

Raozan Police SI Joynal Abedin said autorickshaw passenger Shakil was killed on the spot after head-on collision between the three-wheeler and the autorickshaw. Four others including autorickshaw driver were injured in the accident.

The body was recovered and sent to the morgue of Chattogram Medical College Hospital for autopsy, he said
BPL 2022: Will Jack guides Chattogram to play-off
It was a do-or-die match for Chattogram Challengers in the ongoing Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), and they passed with a four-wicket win over Sylhet Sunrisers riding on a 57-ball 92 by Will Jack on Saturday.
After Fortune Barishal and Comilla Victorians, Chattogram are the third team to confirm a place in the play-off.
Sylhet batted first in this match and posted a challenging 185 for six in 20 overs. Colin Ingram and Anamul Haque posted 41 in the opening stand which was a good foundation for them to put up a tough target for the Challengers.
Ravi Bopara, the Sylhet captain, was the highest runs getter for them scoring 44 off 21 balls with two fours and four sixes. Lindle Simmons posted 42 off 27 balls, Mosaddek Hossain scored 35 off 22 balls with three fours and two sixes.
For Chattogram, Mrittunjoy Chowdhury bagged three wickets.

In reply, Will Jacks hit an unbeaten 92 and guided Chattogram to the play-off from a cliff edge. Chadwick Walton also did well scoring 35 off 23 balls with three fours and two sixes.
When Chattogram was about to fall, Shamim Hossain posted 21 off seven balls with three fours and one six. Off the first ball of the last ball, Will Jack hit a six and sealed the match for Chattogram.
It was the highest by Jacks in his T20 career.

In the second match of the day, Khulna Tigers will take on Comilla Victorians. If Khulna win, they will advance to the play-off, and with that, Minister Group Dhaka will be eliminated. If Comilla win, Dhaka will advance to the play-off, and in that case, Khulna will be eliminated.
Youth dies after falling off train in Ctg
A 18-year-old youth died after falling from a speeding train in Chattogram on Friday morning.
His identity could not be known immediately, said Md Khorshed Alam, an officer at Sitakunda railway police station.

The youth fell from the Chattogram-bound Sagarika Express in the Sheikh Para area, barely a kilometre from the Sitakunda railway station, at 8.45am and died on the spot, said eye-witnesses.
"We have sent the body for an autopsy," said Khorshed.
Mentally challenged man charred to death in Chattogram
A 40-year-old mentally challenged man kept chained by his family members was charred to death in a fire that broke out in his house in Chattogram in the small hours of Thursday.
T he deceased was identified as Mohammad Mujib, who owned the house in the Bagan Bazar area of Fatikchhari upazila.

Shahadat Hossain Saju, chairman of Bagan Bazar union said, the fire broke out around 12am when the family was fast asleep and soon engulfed the entire building. "As Mujib was chained, he could not come out of the house and died in the fire."

On information, a fire tender rushed to the spot, doused the flames and recovered the charred body of Mujib, father of two children, from the house. "The body has been sent for an autopsy," said an official.

Two sisters have succumbed to the burn injuries they sustained in a fire that broke out at their flat in the Bakalia area of the port city Thursday.
The deceased were Sabrina Aktar, a 23-year-old third-year honours student, and Samia Khaled, an 18-year-old second-year HSC student of Government Hazi Mohammad Mohsin College in Chattogram and daughters of Alauddin Khaled.
Sabrina succumbed to her injuries on Sunday and Samia on Monday morning at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery under Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), said their father.

The sisters were at first taken to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital and later shifted to DMCH as their condition deteriorated.
The fire broke out on Thursday at the five-storey building in the Rahattarpul area, where they had their flat.
According to fire service officials, the fire had originated from the leakage of gas from a cylinder on the fifth floor of the building followed by an explosion.

KOICA to render pre-survey on introducing metro rail in Chattogram
A pre-survey mission from South Korea is visiting Bangladesh as part of the transport master plan and preliminary feasibility study for urban metro rail transit construction in Chattogram metropolitan area.
The team will stay in Bangladesh till February 16, said the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) on Sunday.
KOICA, in collaboration with Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA), Road Transport and Highways Division (RTHD), Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, launched the pre-survey for the two years project titled "Transport Master Plan and Preliminary Feasibility Study for Urban Metro Rail Transit Construction, Chattogram Metropolitan Area."

DTCA, under the Road Transport and Highways Division, will partner with KOICA to implement this project.
The team will also visit Chattogram city's different road sections to see the current condition.
After the field survey, the team will share the result on February 15, 2022, with Secretary RTHD.
The main purpose of this project is to prepare for the basis for urban transport infrastructure according to the concentration of population, urban expansion, and traffic congestion.
KOICA team participate kick-off meeting of the pre-survey mission with Nazrul Islam, Secretary of RTHD, including officials from RTHD and DTCA.

KOICA would provide US$ 6 million grant aid to develop the master plan and basic plan.
The KOICA expert team will have a series of discussions with all the relevant stakeholders, including Bangladesh Roads Transport and Highway Division (RTHD), Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA), Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), Chattogram Development Authority (CDA), Divisional Commissioner's Office, Chattogram, Police Commissioner, Chattogram Metropolitan Police, Chattogram Port Authority, Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology, RHD, Chattogram.
South Korean Ambassador to Bangladesh Lee Jang-keun and Deputy Country Director of KOICA Bangladesh Office Taehyun Kim had a courtesy meeting with Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader and briefed the plan.
Kim hoped that this project will support the Bangladesh government in developing a master plan for mass transit and reducing traffic congestion in the port city.
Govt to start feasibility study on Metrorail in Chattogram: Quader
The government will conduct a feasibility study of metro-rail in the port city of Chattogram with the help of Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), said Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.
“Our ministry has taken steps to fulfil the expectation of the residents of Chattogram as per the directives of the Prime Minister and the work of feasibility study will begin,” he said.
The minister came up with the information while talking to reporters after a meeting with a delegation of KOICA and South Korean Ambassador to Bangladesh Lee Jang-keun.

“The government has taken a project of Tk 77 crore and the Korean government will provide Tk 51 crore as grant. Already a delegation of experts arrived here to survey the project and they’ll exchange their views with the authorities concerned in Chattogram from February 8 to February 12,” he said.
Under the project, a coordinated transport plan will be prepared and the work on the feasibility study of a mass transit line and metro rail will start, said Obaidul.
“The work on feasibility study will be completed next year,” he said.
The issues relating to metro-rail projects for other large cities was discussed at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) held virtually with Ecnec Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair on January 4.

“The Prime Minister said not only in Dhaka, the metro-rail project should also be there in Chattogram. Prepare a design for the metro-rail project for Chattogram Airport to Chattogram Railway Station. Later, we should go for designs for metro rail projects in large cities where there’re big airports,” said Planning Minister MA Mannan while briefing reporters after the meeting.
The minister hoped that metro rail projects would be taken for other large cities in the future. “We, on part of the Planning Commission, will also encourage city corporations to design such projects,” he said.
Worker dies at Sitakunda shipyard
In a freak accident, a 27-year-old worker died at a ship recycling factory in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram in the early hours of Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Ariful Islam Sujan, a resident of Fultala village in the district's Sonaichari union. He worked as a cutter at Kabir Steel Shipyard.

The accident occurred at 1.30am when Sujan suffered a hit by an iron rod while working. His co-workers rushed him to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Abul Kalam Azad, officer-in-charge of Sitakunda police station, said the body will be handed over to family after an autopsy.
