Shakib completes 400 wickets in T20s
Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan completed a remarkable feat of taking 400 wickets in Twenty20 cricket on Monday while playing for Fortune Barishal in the ongoing Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
Shakib is only the fifth cricketer in history to take 400 or more wickets in the T20s. Dwyane Bravo, Imran Tahir, Sunil Narine and Rashid Khan are the other bowlers to reach the same milestone.
It was Mahmudullah Riyad, the captain of Minister Group Dhaka, who fell prey to Shakib as his 400th wicket with a catch to Dwayne Bravo— who is the holder of the record of taking most wickets in the format with more than 550 wickets to his name.

Afif Hossain, Sabbir Rahman and Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored 6, 8 and 9 respectively.
Shamim Hossain scored 14 off 23 balls, and Naeem Islam scored 15. At one point, it was expected that Chattogram would be restricted under a hundred runs. But Benny Howell came up with some wonderful shots, and he posted 41 with three fours and as many as sixes.

It’s great to get recognised, says Shakib after being in ICC ODI team of year
Bangladesh allrounder Shakib Al Hasan said it’s great to be recognised by the ICC after he found a place in the ICC ODI Team of the year 2021.
Bangladesh has a total of three players in the team— Mushfiqur Rahim and Mustafizur Rahman have also featured in the team along with Shakib.
No other nation has as many members in the ICC ODI Team of the Year which was announced on Thursday.
“This is a very positive sign for our cricket. It feels really good to be recognised by the ICC,” Shakib told the media after his BPL team Fortune Barishal’s training session on Thursday at the BCB Academy Ground.
Earlier, Mustafizur was named in the ICC T20 Team of the Year 2021. He was the only Bangladeshi in the T20 team.

ICC, on Thursday, also announced the ICC Test Team of the Year. However, no Bangladeshi were featured in the Test which came as a reflection of Bangladesh’s poor show in the format.
Meanwhile, Shakib along with other Bangladeshi cricketers are all set to take part in BPL which is set to begin on Friday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
A total of six teams are taking part in this season of BPL— Chattogram Challengers, Comilla Victorians, Fortune Barishal, Khulna Tigers, Minister Group Dhaka, and Sylhet Sunrisers.

Shakib, Mushfiq, Mustafiz make way into ICC Men’s ODI team 2021
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced its men’s and women’s teams for the year 2021 for different formats of cricket with maximum three cricketers being picked from Bangladesh in the Men’s ODI team.
All- rounder Shakib Al Hasan, wicket-keeper batter Mushfiqur Rahim and pacer Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh included in the ICC Men’s ODI team.
Bangladeshi brilliant pacer Mustafizur Rahman has also been included in the ICC Men’s T20 team for the year. But, Bangladesh has no representation in the ICC Men’s Test, Women’s ODI and T20 teams.
Unrepresented in the ICC's Men's 'T20 Team of the Year 2021' due to a disastrous World Cup campaign in the UAE, no Indian cricketer featured in the global body's 'ODI Team of the Year 2021', despite the inclusion of two players from minnows Ireland.
Incidentally, the ICC Men’s ODI team also does not have any cricketers from Australia, England, New Zealand and West Indies.
But the team has two Pakistani cricketers, including Babar Azam as captain for both the Men’s ODI and T20 teams and another is Fakhar Zaman.

Babar, who has played least among the 11 players, also has 405 runs in six games with two hundreds while his country-mate Zaman has 369 runs in the year.
Shakib was superb as an all-rounder having 277 runs and 17 wickets, while Mushfiqur Rahim had 400-plus runs along with stumping and catches while pacer Mustafizur Rahman had 18 wickets to consider for ICC Men’s ODI team.
Sri Lanka (15), Ireland (14) and Bangladesh (12) played the most number of ODIs in 2021, so their players dominate in the ICC XI.

BB likely to approve Shakib’s directorship at People’s Bank on Thursday
Bangladesh Bank is likely to approve share ownership of star cricketer Shakib Al Hasan and his mother Shirin Akhtar in the proposed People’s Bank in the upcoming meeting of its board of governors. People's Bank failed to qualify for the final license even three years after issuing consent from Bangladesh Bank, which is going to take in Shakib and his mother in the bank.

Under the chairmanship of Governor Fazle Kabir, the meeting is likely to approve both the applications to pave the journey of another bank in the country with the blessing of Shakib, sources said. The letter of intent (LOI) expired in December last year after several extensions. The bank has now applied for an extension of the LOI by adding cricketer Shakib and his mother. “The bank is now ready to start operations,” said Abul Kashem, a New York-based Bangladeshi expatriate and chairman of the proposed bank. “We have made all kinds of preparations. After submitting all the documents as per the requirements of Bangladesh Bank, we are ready to supplement any more info,” he told UNB Kashem said Shakib and his mother may hold a total of two directorships in the board of directors of People’s Bank. People's Bank could not start operations due to lack of arrangement of paid up capital of Tk 500 crore. Consequently, the bank is not getting the final license of Bangladesh Bank. Bangladesh cricket’s poster boy is going to own two director posts of People's Bank, which is finally waiting to get the final license from the Central Bank. According to the rules of Bangladesh Bank, an aspiring director of a bank must hold a minimum of 2 per cent share. So, a minimum capital of Tk 10 crore has to be provided for each post of director for the People’s Bank.

On February 17, 2019, the Bangladesh Bank issued letters of intent (LOI) to three new banks - People’s Bank, Bengal Commercial Bank and Citizen Bank. Out of these three, Bengal and Citizen Banks have already started their operations. But People’s Bank failed to meet the regulatory requirements, including paid-up capital and prayed for more time.

Shakib nominated for ICC Men's ODI Player of the Year
Bangladesh star allrounder Shakib Al Hasan has been nominated for the International Cricket Council’s Men's ODI Player of the Year award.
Along with him, Pakistan captain Babar Azam, South African batter Janneman Malan, and Ireland batter Paul Stirling have also been named for the same.

Shakib is the only allrounder among the nominees. In the pandemic-hit year, Shakib batted in nine matches and scored 277 runs with two fifties. He also bagged 17 wickets. Shakib’s bowling performance is keeping him ahead of the other nominees.
2021 was the year when Bangladesh allrounder made a comeback after serving a ban imposed on him by the ICC due to failing to report corrupt approaches made to him by the bookies.
Shakib started a challenging year with the home series against the West Indies and emerged player of the series. Right before that series, he participated in the inaugural Bangabandhu T20 Cup at the domestic level but failed to impress. That was his first competitive cricket event after the ban ends.

After the home series against West Indies, Shakib played against Sri Lanka as well but failed to continue on a good run. He returned to his true form against Zimbabwe when he amassed 145 runs in three ODIs and bagged eight wickets— which help him to earn the second player of the series award in the same calendar year.
While Shakib shone both with ball and bat, Babar, the Pakistan captain did well with the bat scoring 405 in six matches with two centuries, and Janneman also batted superbly scoring 509 in eight matches with two centuries, and Paul also did well with the bat amassing 705 runs in 14 ODIs he played in the year with three centuries and two fifties— which was also the highest run by any batters in the format in the calendar year of 2021.
It’s tough to play all formats together: Shakib
Bangladesh star allrounder Shakib Al Hasan said that it’s tough for him to continue playing all three formats of the game due to the pandemic-forced situation.
The allrounder recently skipped the tour of New Zealand for a two-match Test series.
It was not the first time when Shakib skipped a series due to his personal reasons. In recent interviews, Shakib said it’s getting tough for him to spend quality time with his young family due to his business in cricket.

While talking to a private TV channel, Shakib said he knows what is the most important format for him to take part in.
“I know what the format should get my preference,” he said. “I think the time has come for me to think about how I play Test.” Shakib clearly indicated that he is not interested to play every Test match Bangladesh play.
Bangladesh’s neighbouring Test-playing nation India is looking to introduce a good rotation policy to manage the workload of the players. But Bangladesh is yet to make such a move.
“I’m not saying that I’m retiring from Tests,” Shakib added. “But I can refrain from playing T20s after playing the 2022 World Cup. I might play Tests and ODIs then. But it’s not possible to play all three formats together.”

The 34-year-old allrounder also said the pandemic-forced quarantine is also taking a toll on him. He said that staying in quarantine feels like ‘staying in jail”.
Shakib has a tendency to live in the USA with his wife and young children. He is currently in the USA and will be there until the next season of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) takes place.
According to the latest development, the new season of BPL will begin on January 21, and Shakib is expected to play for the team based in Barishal. However, it’s not official yet.
Batter Fazle Rabbi added to Bangladesh squad to replace Shakib on NZ tour
Bangladesh selectors added Fazle Rabbi Mahmud to the Test squad for the New Zealand tour to replace Shakib Al Hasan, BCB confirmed on Wednesday.
The 34-year old batter scored the most runs in the recently concluded 23rd National Cricket League where he made 630 runs at an average of 60.30.
Rabbi’s late inclusion came after ace all-rounder Shakib took leave from the NZ tour citing family reasons.

Shakib was included in the squad when BCB announced the first list. But within a few hours after the announcement, Shakib sent a letter to BCB requesting a leave.
Bangladesh will face the hosts in a two-match Test series in January 2022 which will be a part of the 2021-2023 cycle of the ICC World Test Championship.
The Bangladesh team will leave for New Zealand on Wednesday night for the series with the Tests scheduled in Tauranga and Christchurch
Meanwhile, former Sri Lanka spin legend Rangana Herath has agreed to a two-year term as spin bowling coach of the Tigers.
Herath will join the Bangladesh coaching team in New Zealand.
His contract is until the end of November 2023. Herath had earlier been the team’s spin consultant for the away series against Zimbabwe this year followed by the home series against Australia and New Zealand and the ICC Twenty20 World Cup.

Dhaka Test: Bangladesh lose by an inning and 8 runs
Despite a great fight from Shakib Al Hasan with the bat, Bangladesh lost the Dhaka Test to touring Pakistan by an innings and eight runs on Wednesday evening at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
Bangladesh needed to bat the whole of the fifth and last day to save the match. But they could not do that as Pakistan bowlers were disciplined enough to take 13 wickets of Bangladesh in a day to seal the game.
About two and half days of this were washed out due to persistent rain caused by Bay depression. It created a hope that Bangladesh would draw this Test, but they failed to do that and lost the match.
There was no play in the final session of day one, only 6.2 overs on day two, and no play on day 3, a delayed start on day four; yet a result was unexpected. But Pakistan kept the match alive after declaring their first innings at 300 for four.
In reply, Bangladesh tumbled for 87/10 in their first innings with Sajid Khan bagging eight wickets— his best in his Test career. Bangladesh were at 76 for seven at the end of day four, and they only added 11 runs on the fifth day morning with their overnight total and lost the last three wickets in 28 minutes.
Bangladesh fell short of 14 runs from avoiding a follow-on. Pakistan have enforced the follow-on, the hosts lost four wickets in 25 runs which threw Bangladesh’s last hope away.
