BNP withdraws daylong general strike after 6 hrs in Bhola
BNP has shortened their dawn-to-dusk general strike in Bhola by six hours which they called in protest against the death of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) district unit president Noor-e-Alam in a clash between police and supporters of the main opposition party.
The party said it has taken the decision considering peoples’ sufferings.
BNP senior leader Gayeshwar Chandra Roy made the announcement at a press briefing at district party office Thursday noon.
Gayeshwar alleged, “We have not seen any punitive measures or any action against police till date unless instruction comes from the upper level of the.”
He also demanded compensation for the families of those killed and the injured victims in the clash as well as action against police.
After the press conference, the wife and children of slain Swechchasebak Dal leader Abdur Rahim were provided inancial assistance by BNP.
Following the announcement, shops opened and traffic movement became normal on the district roads.
Till 12pm today, the protesting BNP men staged demonstrations and brought out processions in different parts of the district in a peaceful manner, said BNP’s Bhola unit joint general secretary Humayun Kabir Sopan.

Due to the hartal, most shops and business establishments on Mahajanotti Sadar Road and the BNP office area remained shut in the morning.
Only a few vehicles were seen plying on the roads in the district. However, long-haul buses were seen plying on the Bhola-Charfashion route.
Besides, law enforcers were deployed at some major places of the district town to avoid any untoward situation.
Noor-e-Alam sustained bullet wounds during the clash with the police on Sunday.
Humayun said that Noor-e- Alam was taken to Comfort Hospital in the capital on the same day, where he succumbed to his injuries around 3.15pm on Wednesday. He had been on life support at the hospital.
As part of BNP’s countrywide demonstration programme protesting the ongoing load shedding and mismanagement in the power sector, the leaders and activists of the party gathered in front of their district party office in Bhola on Sunday.
At one stage, police obstructed them when they tried to stage demonstrations at Kalinath Roy Bazar around 11.30am, triggering a clash.
Later, police fired bullets and lobbed teargas shells that left local Swechchasebak Dal leader Abdur Rahim dead and some other leaders and activists of the party injured.
JCD leader sues 33 BCL men for 'attempted murder'
Some 33 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), including Central BCL vice-president Tilottama Sikder, have been sued on charges of theft and intended to commit murders.
Mansura Alam, a member of the convening committee of the Dhaka University Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), filed the case in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shanto Islam Mallik on Sunday.
Besides, 100 unnamed BCL leaders and activists have been accused in the case.

The court accepted the plaintiff's statement and directed the officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahbagh police station to submit a report on June 26 after investigating the allegations in the case.
According to the case statement, the leaders and activists central committee of Bangladesh BCL and DU BCL attacked JCD leaders and activists with local weapons when they were carrying forward the scheduled rally in the university area, leaving 70-80 JCD leaders and activists injured.

On May 22, Mansura Alam, JCD activists of Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall Atiq Murshed and several others were attacked by BCL leaders at the university’s TSC area, stated in the case.
Attacks on JCD carried out at behest of govt high-ups: BNP
BNP senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Saturday alleged that the attacks on the leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) were carried out by Bangladesh Chhatra League(BCL) in Dhaka University areas at the behest of the topmost level of the government.
“The videos containing the cruel attacks on peaceful processions of JCD and repression on female JCD leaders by the goons of Chhatra League and Jubo league have gone viral…we would like to say the perpetrators indulged in such misdeeds at the behest of the highest leader of Awami League and the highest position of the government,” he said.
Speaking at a rally, the BNP leader also strongly condemned the ‘cruel’ attacks on the JCD leaders and activists on the Dhaka University campus and the high court premises by the Chhatra League men.

Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal arranged the rally in front of the Jatiya Press Club in protest against what it said the attacks on JCD leaders and workers by BCL and the death threat to Khaleda Zia by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Govt unleashes BCL to attack JCD on DU campus: BNP
Accusing the government of unleashing Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) against Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), BNP senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Friday warned that the consequences of the attacks will not be good.
"Those who (AL leaders) are letting loose their student leaders and workers (BCL) and providing them with arms, sticks, and support to attack Chhatra Dal on Dhaka University campus should think of their consequences, " he said.

Speaking at a rally, the BNP leader said the Awami League government has been indulging in terrorist activities as it has become isolated internationally. “They have no support internationally and the people of the country have rejected them. They have now no choice as their ways all around are blocked. ”
He said no party can stay in power for a long time by resorting to hooliganism and terrorism when it loses public support and the earth beneath its feet.
BNP’s Dhaka north and south city units arranged the rally in front of the Jatiya Press Club in protest against the attacks on JCD on Dhaka University campus.
Mosharraf, a BNP standing committee member, also warned the BCL leaders and activists that they will have to face the same fate as the attackers of Biswajit and Abrar Fahad for attacking the JCD leaders and activists.
He said the JCD has launched a street movement for the restoration of democracy through their protests programmes at DU.
"We would like to say that the leaders and workers of Chhatra Dal are the children of the people of this country. Their parents are also getting ready to resist you. All those are involved with BNP and its all associate bodies are brothers or guardians of Chhatra Dal. So, no one of these guardians will remain sit idle,” he said.

The BNP leader said all the democratic forces and patriots will get united to make the ongoing movement a success.
He urged the government to quit power immediately by dissolving parliament and handing over power to a non-party neutral government to avoid the consequences of the ruling party leaders of Sri Lanka.
Once a neutral government takes power, Mosharraf said it will take steps for creating a proper atmosphere in the country for holding a credible election.
"EVMs won’t be allowed in the election to be held under a neutral government. The country’s people will elect their representatives by giving votes in their own hands (through ballot paper),” the BNP leader said.
Tension mounts as BCL, JCD clash at DU
Activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) locked into a clash on Dhaka University campus on Thursday, leaving several of them injured .
Police said seven JCD activists were injured in the clash in front of Shilpakala Academy around 12 pm while JCD leaders claimed that over 30 of their activists were injured in the clash.
Activists of BCL, student wing of Awami League, from different dormitories of Dhaka University equipped with bamboo sticks, wood, iron rods, steel pipes and helmets attacked the JCD activists when they were marching towards Doel Chattar with a procession as per their pre-scheduled prigramme, said witnesses.

Newly nominated BCL hall leaders led the BCL activists who carried out the attack, alleged some JCD activists.
JCD activists clash with police in city; 20 injured
At least 20 people were injured, including five law enforcers, in a clash between the activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and police in the city's Nayapaltan area on Sunday evening.
The trouble began around 6pm as a group of JCD activists brought out a procession in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office and put a barricade on the road there around 6:30pm.
As police obstructed the JCD men, they engaged in an altercation with the law enforcers, witnesses said.
At one stage, police charged batons on the JCD activists and lobbed teargas shells to disperse them.
The JCD men also hurled brickbats at the police, leading to a clash that left around 20 people injured.
Later, police arrested at least 10 JCD leaders and activists from the spot.
Contacted, Salahuddin Mia, officer-in-charge of Paltan Police Station, said some police remains deployed near the BNP office every day for security reasons.
He said they came to know that JCD’s thana-level leaders and activists had a programme at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office. “But they suddenly blocked the road in front of the BNP office with a procession, halting traffic.
“As our police members asked to remove the barricade, the Chhatra Dal leaders and activists attacked them with bricks and bats,” the OC said.
He said five members of the police, including assistant commissioner Abul Hasan and sub-inspector Rezaul Islam, were injured.
Later, Salahuddin said, police brought the situation under control by charging batons and firing teargas shells.
He said they also arrested at least 10 people from the spot in connection with the clash.
Meanwhile, at a press conference at their party office at 9:30pm, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi alleged that police attacked the JCD men without any provocation. “We strongly condemn and protest the police action.”
He said at least 15 JCD leaders and activists were injured by the police attack while around 20 leaders and activists of BNP and the Chhatra Dal, including Dhaka south city unit BNP member secretary Rafiqul Alam Mojnu, were arrested.
The BNP leader demanded the government immediately release the arrested leaders and activists of BNP and JCD.
Police disrupt JCD’s symbolic hunger strike at Shaheed Minar
Police in Dhaka disrupted a symbolic hunger strike by Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal at Central Shaheed Minar on Tuesday.
Members of the student wing of BNP embarked on the hunger strike around 9am to express solidarity with the protesting students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).
Before leaving the Shaheed Minar ground around noon, the Chhatra Dal members demanded the removal of SUST Vice-Chancellor Farid Uddin Ahmed and the withdrawal of a police case filed against the university students.

Fazlur Rahman Khokon, president of JCD, saids, "We condemn the heinous attack on the students. We are demanding the immediate resignation of this inhuman V-C."
General secretary of JCD, Iqbal Hossain Shamol said, "V-C means teacher and teacher means guardian, but SUST V-C showed us his authoritarian behaviour. Police League and Chhatra League have attacked ordinary students under his direction."

Asked about the disruption, the joint convener of JCD's Dhaka University unit, Nasir Uddin Nasir, said, "We had planned to hold the hunger strike till 3 pm today, but it was disrupted by police around 11.45 am."
‘Shaheed Jihad Day’ observed
BNP and its associate bodies observed ‘Shaheed Jihad Day’ on Sunday, marking the 31st anniversary of the martyrdom of Nazir Uddin Ahmed Jihad.
Jihad, a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activist of Ullapara upazila in Sirajganj, was shot to death in Dhaka on October 10, 1990 during the anti-Ershad movement.
JCD central leaders placed a wreath at Jihad Memorial Mausoleum at Dainik Bangla crossing at about 8:30pm in observance of the day.

A group of student leaders of the 90s, led by Amanullah Aman, and Jihad Smriti Parishad also paid homage to the Jihad by placing wreaths at his Memorial Mausoleum.
JCD’s showdown in city amid corona outbreak
Amid the alarming spike in Covid cases, over a thousand Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders and activists staged a showdown in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office welcoming the new committees of its four units in Dhaka city.
The JCD activists started gathering in front of the BNP office in small processions at 10am. They chanted slogans hailing the leaders made conveners and member secretaries of the new convening committees of JCD Dhaka south, north, east and west units.

Later, the JCD leaders and activists brought out a procession towards Fakirerpool around 11:45am, forcing police to stop the vehicle movement on the road.
After the procession, police did not allow the JCD activists to reassemble in front of the BNP office.
Additional police personnel were deployed in front of the BNP office and its adjoining areas to maintain law and order centring the showdown by the leaders and activists of JCD, the student body of BNP.
Many JCD men were seen joining the procession and the gathering without wearing masks.
On July 14, JCD president Fazlur Rahman Khokon and general secretary Iqbal Hossain Shyamol announced the two-member committee of the organisation’s each unit of Dhaka city south, north, east and west.

JCD activists clash with police in capital, Mymensingh
Some activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal locked into a clash with police in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office on Thursday over foiling a discussion programme of the student body in Mymensingh.
At least 14 people, including four police members, were injured in the clash while five JCD activists were arrested.
Witnesses said a group of JCD activists brought out a procession around 5pm in front of the BNP office protesting a reported attack on their discussion programme in Mymensingh.
As the procession was marching towards Nightingale crossing, police obstructed it, triggering a clash between the law enforcers and the JCD activists.
At one stage, police charged batons on the JCD men who also retaliated with brickbats and sticks, leaving an unspecified number of people injured.

Contacted, Abdul Ahad, deputy commissioner (Motijheel division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said the JCD activists attacked police from a procession in front of the BNP office, leaving four of them injured.
He said police also charged batons and brought the situation under control.
Ahad said five people were arrested from the spot in this connection.
BNP organising secretary Syed Imran Saleh Prince said JCD central leaders went to Mymensingh to join a discussion programme there in the morning, but police attacked them and foiled the programme.
He said some JCD men brought out a procession at Nayapaltan protesting that incident, but police attacked them here too without any provocation, leaving 10 activists of their student body.

Besides, Prince said, around 10 JCD leaders and activists, including former JCD central general secretary Habibur Rashid Habib and current general secretary Iqbal Hossain Shyamol, were injured and many others arrested.
Meanwhile, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir strongly condemned the two incidents, saying the government has turned Bangladesh into a “police state”.
In a statement, he demanded immediate release of those arrested both in Dhaka and Mymensingh.
