Don’t resort to violence in name of movement: PM Hasina warns BNP
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday (November 03, 2022) warned that her government will not spare BNP if it resorts to violence in the name of movement.
“I told them (BNP) we’ll say nothing if they hold peaceful processions and meetings. But they are going for showdown bearing sticks. If they attack any person, we’ll not spare them,” she said.
The premier was addressing a discussion arranged by Bangladesh Awami League at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre here on the occasion of the Jail Killing Day.

Sheikh Hasina said the movement of BNP means arson violence. What a mayhem they carried out across Bangladesh in 2013, 2014 and 2015. They proved that they are allies of the Pakistani occupation force,” she said, giving an account of the damages caused by the mayhem.
She questioned how BNP dreams that the people will vote for them as the party didn’t stand beside the people with nominal assistance during any tough time.
The Prime Minister said Khaleda Zia was convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust case and sentenced to 10-year in jail. Khaleda’s sister, brother and sister’s spouse came to her (PM) and with plea to release her.

“We’ve given her (Khaleda) scope to stay in her house, suspending her sentence on humanitarian grounds. If BNP does excesses, we will send her back to jail,” she said.
Where is the head of BNP?
PM Hasina once again said that BNP emerged from the pocket of a military dictator who illegally grabbed power. How will such a party rescue democracy,? she asked.
“Hearing it (BNP’s announcement for restoration of democracy), there are also some people who supported them. What knowledge and intellect do they have? Can’t they realize the reality?” she wondered.

The PM also questioned about the whereabouts of BNP leadership. “BNP is jumping, but where is their leader?” she said, adding that both Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman were convicted by court in graft cases.
Khaleda will be back in jail if BNP crosses the limit:
“BNP is showing excitement. But they have two leaders and both are convicted,” she said.
The premier said a convicted person can’t be the party’s chairman as per the charter of BNP. Since Khaleda Zia is a convicted, the chairmanship was given to Tarique Zia who is also a convicted. “Where is the head of BNP now?” she said.

Vote Campaign on development successes: PM to AL leaders and activists
Sheikh Hasina, also the president of Awami League, asked her party leaders and activists to tell the people about her government’s development achievements ahead of the next national election.
“(Convince the people) if AL returns to power, the development trend will continue. And if BNP comes, incidents like looting, misdeeds, bombing and grenade attacks will return,” she told AL men.
She said the people don’t want to see such an unstable situation, rather they want peace. They know AL means development and AL means the improvement of people’s life, she added.

Jail Killing Day: A Look Back
After the killings inside Dhaka Central Jail, people realized that the August 15 massacre was not just about killing a family.
Talking about the Jail Killing day, the PM said a perception was created following the 1975 August tragedy that the assassination of the Father of Nation was merely the wiping out a family. But when the November 3 killing occurred, the people could realize that it had not been the killing of only a family rather the killing of the spirit of the Liberation War and ideology of the Independence.
She said several successive governments after the August 15 bloodbath distorted the history of Bangladesh, erased the name of the Father of the Nation and carried out campaign against him. Anti-Liberation Force and war criminals were reinstated in power.

“Whether Bangladesh remained truly independent after 1975 mayhem was a big question,” said Hasina, adding that the successive governments started acting against the spirit of the Liberation War.
AL general secretary Obaidul Quader delivered the welcome speech while AL presidium members Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Engr. Mosharraf Hossain and Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya Bir Bikram, AL central committee member Parvin Zaman Kalpana, martyred Syed Nazrul Islam’s daughter Dr Syeda Zakia Noor Lipi, and Dhaka South and North City AL presidents Abu Ahmed Monnafi and Sheikh Bazlur Rahman spoke at the event.
AL publicity and publication secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap, MP, and his deputy Aminul Islam moderated the discussion.

Bangladesh's Jail killing massacre happened barely three months after anti-liberation elements assassinated the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members on August 15, 1975.
Train movement between Dhaka-Chattogram-Sylhet becomes normal after 1.5 hours
Train movements on Dhaka-Chattogram and Chattogram-Sylhet routes which were suspended due to the arrival of two trains on the same track have returned to normalcy after one and a half hours of efforts.
The incident happened on Friday at about 3:00pm when the Chattogram-bound Karnaphuli Express train and a container train reached Brahmanbaria’s Akhaura railway junction on the same rail track.
As a result, the Sylhet-bound Paharika Express train got stuck at Akhaura junction, while the Chattogram-bound Paharika express train was stranded at Azampur station.
According to sources at Akhaura railway station, the Chattogram-bound Karnaphuli Express was waiting on Platform No 1 when the Chattogram-bound No 604 container train tried to enter the station on the same track.

“I entered the train following a signal. When I saw that another train was standing in front me, I pulled the brake immediately and stopped the train,” said Abu Talha, Assistant Operator of the container train.
Khayrul Islam, the station cabin master, said that he didn’t know why the operator of the container train had crossed the signal.
“Train movement resumed after we solved the problem. Currently all the trains are arriving and leaving the station smoothly,” said Md Alif Hossain Sikder, Officer In-charge (OC) of Akhaura Railway Police Station.
People will make movement a success this time: Gayeshwar
BNP senior leader Gayeshwar Chandra Roy on Thursday declared that people will make their ongoing movement a success this time defying all obstacles and repressive acts.
"No obstacle could ever help sustain fascism or dictatorship. No movement can be foiled or stopped by just resorting to tear gas and firing without solving the basic problems of the people, he said.
Talking to reporters after paying homage to their party founder Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e- Bangla Nagar, the BNP leader said it is now visible that common people’s participation in their party’s programmes has marked a rise recently and it will continue to grow in the future.
“A time will come when people will make the movement a success…we’re very optimistic about this,” he said.
Gayeshwar along with the leaders of Zia Mancha, a pro-BNP platform, placed a wreath at Zia’s grave, marking the organisation’s 29th founding anniversary.
He said their party has been carrying out the movement on public issues to mount pressure on the government to resolve people’s problems and lower the prices of essential items.
“The increase in commodity prices is a burden for every family. There is no match between their expenditures and incomes. When the expenditures are increasing the incomes are decreasing gradually. People want to get rid of such sufferings.” the BNP leader observed.

Stating that a mass wave has been created across the country in favour of their movement, he warned that they will resist any type of barriers to the programmes announced by the BNP to restore democracy and people’s rights.
Gayeshwar said the government has no other alternative to quitting power to resolve the country’s current political crisis.
He demanded the government immediately step down and dissolve parliament to create a scope for holding the next polls under a non-party neutral government.
“Our five leaders have already been killed in the current movement. The blood of martyrs is associated with this movement. So, we all are committed to getting success in the movement for paying the blood debt of the martyrs,” the BNP leader said.
He said their party will continue the current movement until the goal is achieved and people’s right to vote is established and an environment for a fair and free election is created.

The BNP leader said the country’s people do not want to see the current regime in power anymore as they lost confidence in it. “So, the fascist government is trying to hang onto power by resorting to attacks, cases, killing and terror acts. Our leaders and activists are putting up resistance whenever they’re facing obstacles. This is a sign of the success of our movement.”
Ready to embrace deaths to make movement a success : Abbas
Stating that there's no scope for Awami League (AL) to cling to power this time, BNP senior leader Mirza Abbas said their party leaders and activists are even ready to embrace deaths to make their movement for toppling the current regime a success.
“Shaon (Shaon Pradhan) was shot dead by the police in Narayanganj while Shahidul Islam Shaon in Munshiganj. BNP workers have learned how to take bullets and embrace deaths… so, I don't see any way for this government to stay in power," he said.
Speaking at a rally, the BNP leader said the government won't be able to retain power this time, no matter how many strategies it takes. “Why do you want to stay in power illegally? Why do you (AL) have to rule the country for so many years? Is it for gunning down people and looting banks?”
He said police are killing opposition activists with guns that were procured with taxpayers’ money. One thing I want to remind you (govt) is that the barrels of guns can turn at any time. No dictator could understand it in the past. Time will run out when you can realise it.”

The BNP leader urged the government to quit and hand over power to a neutral administration to avoid public wrath and bad consequences. “No matter how many methods you resort to stealing votes, it will not help.”
Tejgaon zone of Dhaka north city unit arranged the rally in front of BIAM Foundation in the city’s Eskaton area in protest against the price hike of fuel, daily essentials and the killing of four opposition leaders in Bhola, Narayanganj and Munshiganj in police firing.
Abbas, a BNP standing committee member said, the Election Commission is trying to buy more Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) as part of the government’s plan to rig votes in the next polls. “
The government is working out many strategies to steal votes to stay in power again. "The Election commission will buy EVMs spending Tk8,000 crore. I would like to say, this expenditure will be illegal,” he said.
The BNP leader also said the people of Bangladesh will not allow the current Election Commission to hold any election.
He said all the state institutions need to be reformed as the current government has destroyed all the democratic structures.
Abbas alleged that a notification has been issued recently to make a list of the active leaders of BNP at district, upazila, thana and union levels.
He warned that their party will come up with a fitting reply together with people if the law enforcers arrest any of their leaders and activists by making the list.
It’s just rehearsal, final movement yet to begin: Gayeshwar
BNP senior leader Gayeshwar Chandra Roy on Wednesday said their party’s ongoing agitation is just a rehearsal for the ‘final' movement to oust the Awami League government.
"Obaidur Quader (AL Secretary General) often says we have no strength to wage a movement…why do you talk so much? This is just a rehearsal and our leaders and workers have not started the final movement yet," he said.
Speaking at a rally, the BNP leader called upon party leaders and workers to keep their current 'fearless' spirit to initiate an all-out movement in the days to come. “The way you are waking up and bravely standing up before police instead of running away, just keep it up.”
Mirpur zone of Dhaka north city unit arranged the rally on a road near Mirpur-6 kitchen market protesting the price hike of fuel, daily essentials and the killing of three opposition leaders in Bhola and Narayanganj in police firing.
Gayeshwar, a BNP standing committee member, said their party leaders and activists will not return home from the streets without ensuring the voting rights of people. “Those who sacrificed blood in the movement will not go in vain. We’ll restore democracy through the sacrifice of blood.
He said the freedom fighters who liberated Bangladesh through a war would not allow anyone to run the country in a despotic manner. “We’re on a movement not to go to power, but to free people from the chains of autocratic rule.”

The BNP leader also called upon his party colleagues to get ready for a hit back if they are attacked by their political opponents.
He also urged the law enforcers to discharge their responsibilities impartially.
“We call upon the democratic world to stand by the people who are on a movement. We seek your support as members of the democratic world for the restoration of democracy and our right to vote. You don't have to bring anyone to power. Let people decide who will be there in power,” Gayeshwar said.
BNP's movement cannot be suppressed by attacks, arrests: Fakhrul
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir warned on Friday that the movement his party's activists have thrown themselves into can no longer be suppressed by attacks and arrests.
“We want to make it very clear that the movement can never be suppressed by such terrorist attacks, by killing, arresting and suing with false cases. BNP cannot be removed from the streets," said Fakhrul.
He was speaking in a press conference at the chairperson's office in Gulshan this morning.

Fakhrul said, "Yesterday, when the stage was being prepared for the rally in Pallabi zone with the permission of the police, just then the Awami League (AL) terrorists armed with weapons and sticks attacked on our leaders and activists chanting 'Joy Bangla' slogans. This was all covered in the media.”
Around 75 of the BNP activists were injured in the attack while eight were arrested, he claimed.
The rally was scheduled to be held in the Pallabi Zone at the Eidgah ground in D Block. After the police objected, BNP leaders changed it to two other places, either in front of Old Pallabi Old Police Station or in Mukul Fauj field in front of Pallabi Kitchen Market, said Fakhrul
The police finally gave permission to hold this rally at Mukul Fauz field at 1 pm. Yet the attack was carried out just when the activists were preparing the stage for the rally, he added.
"The saddest, horrifying incident is when our leaders and activists stood up to resist the attackers yesterday, the police charged batons, tear gas and opened fire on our leaders to disperse them."
He said, "We have been saying again and again that the role of the police should be to protect, to remain neutral. But the police are fully working to suppress the pro-democracy movement on behalf of these attackers, the Awami League and the terrorists.”
Fakhrul asserted that the ruling party and police's actions reflect they want to provoke a violent situation.

"We think that they are doing these things to create a violent situation, to destroy the democratic atmosphere in the country, to keep the opposition away from politics and away from the electoral field," said Fakhrul.
Meanwhile, BNP has announced nationwide demonstrations for Sunday protesting the attack on their programme in Mirpur.
On Thursday, at least 100 BNP activists were injured during a series of clashes with ruling Awami League rivals at the capital's Mirpur area over holding a scheduled rally.
Earlier on September 10, BNP announced to hold public rallies in 16 spots under its Dhaka south and north city units until September 27 in protest against the increase in prices of essentials, fuel and transport fares.
The rallies are also meant for registering the party’s protest against the killings of Bhola Chhatra Dal leader Noor-e-Alam, Swechchasebak Dal leader Abdur Rahim and Narayanganj Jubo Dal leader Shaon Prodhan.
Outline of anti-govt 'simultaneous' movement soon: Fakhrul
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday said the outline of the 'simultaneous' movement to oust the government will be presented soon.
"We'll come up before the nation with the final outline of the simultaneous movement as soon as possible," he said.
Speaking at a press conference at BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office, the BNP leader also said their party has long been working to forge a greater unity with various political parties.
“Following the talks with the different parties, our (BNP) standing committee meeting yesterday (Monday) decided to finalise the outline of the simultaneous movement,” the BNP leader said.
Read:Ready to take bullets, won’t leave the streets: Abbas
Asked about the nature of the outline, he said the main focus will be on forcing the government to quit for holding a free, fair and acceptable election. “This parliament must be dissolved and power has to be handed over to a neutral government under which a new Election Commission will be constituted, and they’ll create an environment for an inclusive election where all the voters can cast their votes smoothly.”
Besides, Fakhrul said a national government will be formed after that election with the parties that are going to join the simultaneous movement.
About the necessity of the national government, he said it would not be reasonable to repair alone by a single party the damage done by the Awami League to the state system.
“For that reason, we want to include other parties in this process so that we can take decisions based on consensus through discussions about various institutions of the state such as the judiciary, administration, parliament and the media,” the BNP secretary general observed.
He called upon all opposition parties to join BNP’s planned simultaneous movement to oust the current regime and ensure a credible national election in the country.
The BNP leader said that if the political parties take to the streets simultaneously, the movement itself will determine its future course of action.
No formal talks with Jatiya Party
Responding to a question, Fakhrul said they have not had so far any formal talks with the Jatiya Party about the simultaneous anti-government movement.
He, however, said their door is open for any party that wants to join the movement. “We have made it clear that we will wage the movement simultaneously with the parties, individuals and organisations those are against the current authoritarian government and those want to restore democracy and people’s voting rights."
Asked whether BNP had a discussion with Jamaat-e-Islami and about its statement on not being part of the 20-party alliance, Fakhrul said Jamaat has already given a statement on the matter. “We're talking about simultaneous movement now…All parties will carry out the movement from their respective positions. This is what we're talking about."
Police not BNP's opponent
Fakhrul said their party wants the police to perform its constitutional responsibilities as a state organisation. “We never consider the police as our opponent. The police should be friends of the people and we also consider them as friends.”
He, however, alleged that the government is using police to hang onto power illegally by violating the constitution and human rights.
The BNP leader urged the law enforcers not to comply with the government's illegal directives that could lead to accusations of human rights violations against them like RAB.
Fakhrul alleged that some overenthusiastic police officers are attacking BNP’s programmes across the country and firing on the opposition leaders and activists without any justification.

Extension of rental power plants’ tenure unjustified
The BNP leader said when the Power Development Board is not able to produce power from many power plants due to lack of energy and the government is giving subsidies of hundreds of crores of taka without getting any power, the tenure of four quick rental power plants has been extended. “It’ll only increase the amount of losses. We demand cancellation of this decision of the government."
He said the main reason behind the move is to plunder public money in the name of capacity charges of the four power plants.
Fakhrul also slammed the government for increasing the prices of some essential drugs used in health care. “We strongly condemn it. The prices of the medicines have been hiked unethically only to create a scope for some businessmen to make a lofty profit. We demand immediate withdrawal of this decision.”
BNP to intensify movement in Dhaka city with 16 rallies in September
As part of the party’s move to intensify its ongoing ant-government movement, BNP has drawn up a program of public rallies at 16 spots in Dhaka city till September 27, in protest against the increase in transport fares, and the prices of essentials and fuel oils.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the programme, to be organized jointly by the party’s Dhaka North and Dhaka South units, from a rally in front of the party’s Nayapaltan central office.
The rallies are also meant for registering the party’s protest against the killings of Bhola Chhatra Dal leader Noor-e-Alam, Swechchasebak Dal leader Abdur Rahim and Narayanganj Jubo Dal leader Shaon Prodhan.
Fakhrul said, “We’ve initiated a movement and it’ll continue. We would arrange protest rallies at 16 spots of the capital, including this one, until September 27.”
Once these programmes are observed, he said they will announce the next programmes of action across the country. “Join the movement,” Fakhrul urged.
As part of the programmes, a rally arranged by Dhaka south city unit’s Motijheel, Paltan and Shahjahanpur zone was arranged in front of the BNP central office today (on Saturday).

The party’s Uttara east zone will arrange a rally on September 11 (tomorrow)while Shahbagh and Ramna on September 12 in front of Dhaka Reporters’ Unity, Uttara west zone on September 13, Pallabi zone on September 15, Sutrapur and Dholaikhal on September 16, Postagola on September 18, Gulshan on September 19, Basabo on September 20, Mirpur on September 21, Konapara on September 22, Mohammadpur on September 23, Kamrangirchar on September 24, Badda September 25, Kalabagan zone September 26 and finally Tejgaon zone on September 27.
Besides, he said Dhaka south and north city units will arrange a silent sit-in programme by holding candles on September 27.
Fakhrul said strong unity of people is now necessary for the restoration of democracy and getting rid of misrule through an effective movement.
The BNP has been organising demonstrations across the country since the government raised fuel prices and adopted the Loadshedding policy.
BNP has also been alleging that their three activists were killed while over 1,000 were injured as police and ruling party men worked together to attacked the party’s programmes in different parts of the country.
Govt repressing opposition activists to foil movement: BNP
BNP today (September 7, 2022) alleged that the government is harshly suppressing opposition politicians by attacking their peaceful programmes against the price hike of fuel and essential items.
“Our programmes are on across the country protesting the increase in the prices of daily essentials and fuel. But the law enforcers are mercilessly attacking and torturing our leaders and activists to thwart the movement”, said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Rizvi was talking to reporters after paying a floral homage to BNP founder Ziaur Rahman at his grave together with leaders of the newly formed convening committee of Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal’s Dhaka south city unit.
Read:“Govt lacks public support, failed to resolve issues with India”
He said many leaders and workers have been injured by the attacks while some of them have lost their eyes, and some have been crippled.
“As you know, three lives have been lost in police firing. Besides, false cases have been filed against hundreds of our leaders and activists, forcing many of them to leave their houses, villages and areas (to avoid arrest)….What offence have they committed? Holding rallies is a universal democratic right,” the BNP leader said.
He said the price of eggs has again marked a sharp rise while the prices of every food item like vegetables, pulses and rice have also increased. “Is it unfair to protest against the increase in the price of commodities? The role of a responsible opposition party is to protest against it by mobilising people.”
The BNP leader said whenever their party tries to raise its voice against the rise in prices of essential commodities, the government comes up with harsh repressive acts, letting loose the law enforcers against their leaders and workers.
Read:Movement to continue until AL govt’s fall: Fakhrul
He said the law enforcers have continued their brutal attacks on BNP’s rallies across the country. “Our protest rally was attacked by police in Lalpur of Natore yesterday (Tuesday). Every day you’re seeing the incidents of bloodshed and the incidents of brutal attacks on BNP leaders and workers.”
Rizvi said the government has stanched people’s all democratic rights and the freedom of expression only to cling to power.
About Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s India tour, he said she went to the neighbouring country when people are going through immense suffering amid a famine-like situation. “But you (PM) have not been able to sign the Teesta deal and realise a fair share of waters from our different common rivers.”
He wondered whether Hasina went to India to get its blessings for staying in power by sacrificing the country’s interests.
Movement to continue until AL govt’s fall: Fakhrul
Denouncing the government’s ‘repressive’ acts to thwart their recent peaceful programmes, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday said their movement will continue until the fall of the Awami League.
Speaking at a press conference, he also alleged that attacks are being made on their party leaders and activists in different parts of the country so that BNP cannot participate in the next general election.
“Our position is clear that this regime must hand over power to an impartial caretaker government by quitting power and dissolving parliament. Then, a new election commission will have to be formed to arrange the polls. We’re moving towards this goal," the BNP leader said.

He said their party has scheduled programmes all over the country until September 10 and those will continue as usual. “After that, we’ll come up with new programmes. This movement will continue until the final victory.”
Besides, the BNP leader also said they have continued their discussions with different opposition parties to build a greater anti-government platform. "We hope to give it a final shape and present it before the nation in a short period of time."
Fakhrul narrated govt’s actions to suppress BNP’s programmes.
He said their party’s programmes have been attacked by police and ruling party activists in different districts, including Narayanganj, Satkhira, Patuakhali, Bhola, Barisal, Jhalkathi, Pirojpur, Thakurgaon, Gaibandha, Chattogram, Noakhali, Feni, Khagrachhari, Rangamati, Narsingdi, Dhaka, Manikganj, Tangail, Munshiganj, Sirajganj, Laxmipur, Jashore, Meherpur, Jhenaidah, Magura, Narail, Khulna, Bagerhat, Brahmanbaria, Cumilla, Chandpur, Kishoreganj, Netrakona, Jamalpur and Mymensingh, since they waged a movement protesting the price hikes of fuel and daily essentials.
He said three leaders and activists of their party and its associate bodies were killed while over 2,000 others were injured in the attacks all over the country recently.

Besides, Fakhrul said around 200 BNP leaders and workers were arrested while 4,081 were implicated in different cases, and around 20,000 unidentified people were made accused in those cases from August 22 to September 1.
He also said section 144 was imposed in 20/25 places across the country and attacks on houses and business establishments were taken place in 50 places.”
Fakhrul urged the government to stop killing and arresting the opposition leaders and activists and common people. “We also demand an impartial investigation into the murder incidents and ensure exemplary punishment of the killers and attackers.
He also called upon the government to release those arrested unjustly and withdraw all the false cases. “The victims should be compensated."
The BNP leader said the members of the police are not obeying the international rules as they are opening fire at people without any justification.
Case in Narayanganj:
Fakhrul said they filed a case in Narayanganj over the killing of a Jubo Dal activist Shaon Prodhan on September 1.
He said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi filed the case against 22 people. “We'll definitely continue the legal fight against every murder and attack incident. On the one hand, we’ll intensify our street movement.”
He said Awami League started attacking the programmes of BNP out of their nervousness seeing a mass wave on the streets.
“Awami League's only means of staying in power is to create panic among people. They want to push BNP towards violence and they’re now suffering from mental pain having failed to take BNP in that direction,” the BNP leader observed.
Fakhrul said they would inform the United Nations about the incidents of oppression, attacks on rallies, killing in police firing and rights violations.
