AL politician among two dead in Dhaka shooting
An Awami League politician and a female college student were killed while his driver was injured when an assailant allegedly opened fire at them in the Shahjahanpur area on Thursday night.
The deceased were identified as Zahidul Islam Tipu, former general secretary of AL Motijheel police station committee, and Samia Afrin Priti, a 22-year-old student of Begum Badrunnesa Government College.
The crime occurred in front of Islami Bank Hospital around 10.15pm when Zahidul was returning home in his car and Samia on a cycle rickshaw with her friend, police said.

"They were all stuck in a traffic jam in the area when a biker wearing a helmet and a mask appeared from nowhere and fired at them. He soon sped away," said SM Gaffarul Alam, inspector (operations), Shahjahanpur police station.
The three sustained bullet injuries and were soon rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, where Zahidul and the student died of their injuries hours later. "Munna is battling for his life at the hospital," he said.

Inspector Gaffarul said that the target was probably only Zahidul. "Anyway, a massive manhunt has been launched to nab the killer," he added.
While Zahidul was a resident of Shahjahanpur, Priti was from the Tilpapara area of Khilgaon.
Car crash kills 7 in southern Myanmar
Seven people were killed in a road accident Saturday on Pathein-Chaungtha road in Ayeyarwady region, according to the local police.
A private car collided with an express bus and caught fire, killing seven people on board, including two men, three women and two children, said an officer of the Ayeyarwady police.

The officer said the passengers on the express bus were not seriously injured as they all got off the bus after the accident. They tried to open the doors of the private car when the fire broke out, but failed.
The victims were brought to Pathein hospital, according to rescue teams.
Dinajpur road crash leaves 2 dead
Two members of a family were in killed as their motorcycle crashed into a stationary truck at Kaugaon on Phulbari road of Dinajpur Sunday morning.
The deceased was identified as Anwarul Islam, a wood trader living in Balubari locality of the city and his brother-in-law Nazrul Islam.
The truck was parked on the road due to mechanical glitch and the motorbike crashed into it as the biker lost control on it, Kotwali police sub-inspector Shamim Haque said.
The bodies were sent to the morgue of M Abdur Rahim Medical College, he added.

Meanwhile, locals alleged that truck has been stranded on the road for the last three days, disrupting movement of vehicles on the road.
The accident could have been avoided if it was removed in time, they said.

Three people were killed as a stolen truck hit a three-wheeler in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj district on Saturday morning.
The deceased were identified as Mofizul Mia, 30, of Andiura union, Amsu Mia, 28 and Samad Mia, 45, of the same upazila.
According to Shayestaganj Highway Police Station, the speedy truck rammed the three-wheeler in front of Madhabpur Fire station on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at around 6.45 am, leaving Mofizul dead on the spot.

Seriously injured Amsu and Samad died on the way to Sylhet Osmani Medical College and Hospital.
OC of Shayestaganj Highway Police Station Mohammad Mainul Islam said a truck was reported stolen from Tangail’s Mirzapur on Friday night and it was found the truck involved in the accident was stolen.
Owner of the truck, Mohammad Momin Miah, told police that the truck was stolen around 9 pm on Friday from Sun Brickers Field in Mirzapur. He also informed the local police, he said.
12-year-old girl found dead in Magura
A 12-year-old girl was found dead on the banks of the Kumar River near her residence in Hatsrikol village of Sreepur upazila on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Razia Khatun, daughter of Mikhiz Sheikh of the village and a Class VI student of Hatsrikol Secondary School.
Police suspect the girl had been murdered over an alleged love affair as she was found with her throat slit.

Asmat Ali Sheikh, grandfather of the deceased, said that Razia went missing around 3 pm on Thursday. "Her body was found on the banks of the river around 11 am on Friday."
Officer-in-charge of Sreepur Police Station Sukdev said that the girl had been brutally murdered. "Efforts are on to nab the killer."
A case has been lodged at the Sreepur police station in this regard. "The body has been sent to the Magura hospital morgue for an autopsy," the OC added.
Ex-president Shahabuddin Ahmed dies at 92
Former Bangladesh president Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed died due to complications from old age at a hospital in Dhaka on Saturday. He was 92.
The former president breathed his last at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) around 10.30am, said Md Saifur Rahman, special officer of the Supreme Court.
He was suffering from different age-related complications and had been undergoing treatment at CMH since February.
The former chief justice of Bangladesh is survived by two sons and two daughters.
The first namaz-e-janaza of the former president will be held around 2pm at his native village in Kendua upazila of Netrakona district while his second namaz-e-janaza will be held at 10am on Sunday.
The former chief justice will be buried at Banani graveyard on Sunday.
Born in 1930 in Netrakona, Shahabuddin served as the chief justice of Bangladesh from 1990 to 1995. In February 1991, he formed a caretaker government with apolitical people and held a free and fair general election in the country.
On July 23, 1996, he was elected the president of the country unopposed, after being nominated by the Awami League government. He retired from office in 2001.
President Abdul Hamid expressed shock and grief over the death of Justice Shahabuddin. He also expressed sympathy to the bereaved family.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina too expressed deep shock and sorrow at the demise of Justice and prayed for the eternal salvation of the departed soul. She also expressed sympathy to the bereaved family.

Career of the former president
He entered the Civil Service of Pakistan (CSP) in 1954 through a competitive examination, successfully completed training at the Lahore Civil Service Academy and attended a special course on Public Administration at the University of Oxford.
After serving for sometime as a magistrate and then as a sub-divisional officer in Gopalganj and Natore, Shahabuddin was promoted to the post of additional deputy commissioner. He was transferred to the judicial branch in June 1960 thus ending his career in the executive branch of the administration.

He subsequently served as additional district and sessions judge in Dhaka and Barisal and as district and sessions judge of Cumilla and Chittagong. In 1967, Ahmed was appointed the Registrar of the High Court in Dhaka.
He was elevated to the bench as a judge of the High Court on January 20, 1972. On deputation, he also served as the chairman of the Labour Appellate Tribunal (1973-74). Thereafter he returned to the High Court Division as a judge.
Shahabuddin was appointed a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh on February 7, 1980.
Justice Shahabuddin was the chairman of the Commission of Enquiry constituted to inquire into the causes of police firing on the agitating students of Dhaka University in mid-February of 1983 that led to deaths of several students.
He served as chairman of the Bangladesh Red Cross Society from August 1978 to April 1982. He attended the International Appellate Judge's Conference held in Washington DC in September 1990.
Shahabuddin was appointed the Chief Justice of Bangladesh on 14 January 1990. A peaceful revolution took place in the country in early December 1990 following public agitation led by opposition political parties for changing the autocratic system of the government and demanding the resignation of then government headed by President H M Ershad.
Consequently on December 6, 1990, then Vice President Moudud Ahmed resigned and Chief Justice Shahabuddin was appointed in his place.
On that very day, Ershad resigned and handed over power to Shahabuddin who became the head of the government as acting president of the country. He formed a caretaker government with neutral non-political persons and held a free and fair election in the country in February 1991.
During this period, he gave back freedom of the press by amending a number of laws, including the Special Powers Act. Thereafter on the election of the president, Shahabuddin resumed his duties on October 10, 1991, as the Chief Justice.
3 stabbed dead in Gazipur over ‘Facebook comment’: 2 held

Gazipur, Mar 13 (UNB) – A murder case was filed against 10 people with Kapasia police station over the deaths of three youths, who allegedly over making a sarcastic comment on a Facebook post at Dakkhingaon in Gazipur district on Saturday night.
The deceased were Faruk Hossain, 26, son of Mohammad Alam, Md Robin, 15, son of Hiron and Naim Hossain, 18, son of Alam Hossain of the Dakkhin gaon village in Kapasia upazila.

The case was filed on Sunday following a complaint lodged by Faruk's father, said AFM Nasim, Officer-in-Charge of Kapasia police station.
According to locals, a group of youths led by Zahid, a youth from neighboring Alinagar village, attacked Naim with sharp weapons near his house around 11 pm Saturday.
While trying to save Naim, some others sustained injuries.
They were taken to Monohardi Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared Faruk and Naim dead.
Injured Robin was shifted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Jahangir Mahmud, Union Parishad member in the area said,”Recently Naim made a sarcastic comment on a photo of Zahid’s wife posted on Facebook. Agitated by the comment Zahid attacked him.”
OC AFM Nasim said, Belayet, from Kocherchar area and Faisal from Doulatpur area in Monohardi upazila were detained in connection with the murders after handed over by locals.
Efforts are on to arrest the accused in the case, said the OC.

Speeding private car fatally hits two boys in Cumilla
Two boys were killed on Friday when a speeding private car struck them on their way from a haircutting saloon at Syedpur of Cumilla Burichang upazila on Dhaka-Chittagong highway, police said.
The deceased were identified as Rabiul Hossain, 16 of Shahdaulatpur of the upazila and Md Anis, 5 of the same area.

The accident occurred at around 1 pm on Friday.
Mainamati Highway Police OC Belal Uddin Jahangir said the car was heading towards Chattogram.
Rabiul died on the spot and Anis died after he was taken to the hospital.

Police seized the car and held its driver, he said.
35-yr-old killed trying to settle dispute in Kurigram
A 35-year-old man who tried to help mediate a simmering dispute between two families over a love affair was allegedly stabbed to death in Kurigram Sadar upazila.
The deceased was identified as Bakul Mia, son of Abdus Sattar, a resident of the Dharla housing project in Panchgachhi union.
Around 9pm on Thursday in the Dharla housing project area, an argument between the two families over the affair between their son and daughter, respectively, turned violent.

Bakul rushed to the spot and was stabbed as he intervened. A seriously injured Bakul died on the way to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, police said.
Officer-in-charge of Kurigram Sadar Police Station Khan Mohammad Shahriar said "the attacker has not yet been identified". "Efforts are on to identify and nab him."

Man ‘dies of cardiac arrest’ after Rab interrogation in Ctg
A 65-year-old man, who fell sick during interrogation by Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), died reportedly of cardiac arrest at Chittagong Medical College Hospital on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Md Nazrul Islam, a resident of Rangunia of Chattogram. He was an accused in a murder case.
Rab-7 Commander Lieutenant Colonel MA Yusuf said they detained Nazrul from in front of Chevron Diagnostic Center at Panclaish in the city around 10 pm on Tuesday.

As Nazrul fell sick during interrogation he was sent to CMCH where he breathed his last, he said.
“Doctors said Nazrul died of a heart attack. It would not be right to say Nazrul died in Rab custody,” he added.
However, Nazrul’s family declined to make any comment regarding his death.
His son Setul said, “ We don’t want to talk about the death. Please don’t ask me questions.”

Nazrul was involved in contracting business and had taken loans from many people. There were two cases including a murder case against him.
