Jatiya Party leader found dead in Panchagarh residence
Police on Saturday night recovered the body of a local Jatiya Party (JP) leader from his house at Ghatiarpara village in Panchagarh sadar upazila.
The deceased was Golam Azam, 52, general secretary of Panchagarh unit JP and also a businessman.
Golam Azam’s daughter Pinky found his body lying in a pool of blood in the bedroom with severe wounds in the head.
The family members immediately informed the matter to police.
Police recovered the body and sent it to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police said it might be a preplanned murder.

Panchagarh Additional Superintendent of Police SM Shafiqul Islam said after seeing the wound marks it is being suspected that Azam was killed long before his body was found.
Special teams from PBI and CID have arrived.

They are examining the crime scene and questioning the family members and neighbours, he said.
2 killed, 4 injured in Pirojpur road accidents
Two persons have been killed and four others injured in separate road accidents in Pirojpur, police said on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Delwar Hossain Sardar, 60, a van driver from Bhandaria upazila, and Mia Md Faruk Hossain, 65, a former chairman of Dhanisafa union of Mathbaria upazila and a local Awami League member.
Delwar died after his van was hit by a tractor trolley on a bridge near Zila Parishad Market in Pirojpur's Bhandaria upazila on Saturday morning. He died in the impact of the crash, said Bhandaria Police Station OC Masumur Rahman Biswas.
"The body has been sent to the local hospital morgue for an autopsy. The killer vehicle has been seized and efforts are on to arrest its driver," the OC said.

On Friday evening, Faruk Hossain was killed in a head-on collision between a truck and a three-wheeler. Three other occupants of the three-wheeler and its driver sustained injuries in the accident, police said.
Pirojpur additional SP Mollah Azad Hossain said that the truck driver was arrested. "The body has been sent to the local hospital morgue for an autopsy," he said.

2 killed in Narail road crash
Two women were killed and eight others were injured when a bus hit a CNG auto-rickshaw on Narail-Lohagarah road at Burikhali in Sadar upazila of Narail district on Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Rani Biswas, 40, and Mamata, 50, of Jashore district.

The accident occurred around 3 pm when the Narail-bound ‘Khanjahan Paribahan’ hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, leaving one killed and nine others injured, said Shawkat Kabir, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.

The injured were taken to a local hospital where another woman died after admission.
Councillor's daughter, a law student, found dead in Natore
A final-year law student was found dead in her rented accommodation in Natore municipality on Tuesday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Poly Khatun, 27, a student of Rajshahi Law College and daughter of Naldanga municipal ward councillor Shamsunnahar.
Police said that neighbours found Poly's body hanging from the ceiling of her room in the morning and alerted them.

Poly’s mother Shamsunnahar alleged that her son-in-law, Shariful Islam Piash, another ward councillor of Naldanga municipality, used to torture her daughter regularly.
Munsur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station, said the body has been sent for an autopsy. "The allegations are being investigated."
Covid-19: 11 more die; positivity rate declines to 5.48%
Bangladesh logged 11 more Covid-linked deaths with 1,406 fresh cases in 24 hours till Friday morning as the positivity rate kept declining.
The daily positivity rate slightly declined to 5.48 per cent from Thursday’s 5.53 per cent after testing 25,702 samples during the period, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
On Thursday, Bangladesh reported 10 Covid-linked deaths with 1,516 fresh cases.
The fresh numbers took the country’s total fatalities to 29,016 while the caseload to 19,41,057.
Among the new deceased, five were men and six were women.

Four deaths were reported from Chattogram division while two from Barishal and Sylhet, and one each from Dhaka, Khulna and Rajshahi divisions.
Meanwhile, the mortality rate slightly declined to 1.49 per cent.
However, the recovery kept increasing to 92.38 per cent with the recovery of 6,936 more patients during the 24-hour period.
On January 28, Bangladesh logged its earlier highest daily positivity rate at 33.37 per cent reporting 15,440 cases and 20 deaths.
On December 9 last year, Bangladesh again logged zero Covid-related death after nearly three weeks as the pandemic was apparently showing signs of easing.
The country reported first zero Covid-related death in a single day on November 20 last year along with 178 infections since the pandemic broke out in Bangladesh in March 2020.

Besides, the country registered the highest daily caseload of 16,230 on July 28 last year, while the highest number of daily fatalities was 264 on August 10 last year.
Celebrity astrologer, lyricist Kausar Ahmed Chowdhury passes away
Renowned lyricist and astrologer Kausar Ahmed Chowdhury passed away at Dhanmondi Clinic, Green Road in the capital on Tuesday night at the age of 75.
This was confirmed by his niece Shatila Ahmed Chowdhury. “My uncle, lyricist and astrologer, Kausar Ahmed Chaudhury passed away. May Allah grants him the highest place in Jannah, Ameen,” she confirmed through a Facebook post on Tuesday night.
Kausar Ahmed Chowdhury was admitted to the Palliative Center of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Medical University in the capital on February 9. The next day, on the advice of the family doctor, he was taken to Dhanmondi Clinic.
He got immediately shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on February 11 as his physical condition deteriorated.
The 75 years old celebrity astrologer was battling with multiple health complications for a long period of time, including kidney problems coupled with blood infection. Besides, he has suffered two strokes. He also got tested positive for Covid-19.
Kausar Ahmed Chowdhury became a household name for years as a celebrity astrologer, thanks to his regular horoscope features in the daily Prothom Alo and its weekly tabloid Chhutir Dine which earned him massive popularity among the readers.

Garment worker stabbed dead by muggers in city
A 26-year-old garment worker was stabbed to death by muggers in the city’s Pallabi area on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Raihan Hossain, a resident of Palashnagar area of Pallabi.
The deceased's father Raju Mia said the muggers attacked Raihan at Lalmatia truck stand around 9pm when he went out to buy medicines. The mugger stabbed him in the stomach when he resisted the snatching and took away his money and mobile phone set.

Later, locals took him to a local hospital and then to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where the doctor declared him dead.
Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH police camp, said the body was kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
2 killed in Bagerhat road crash
Two people were killed and three others injured when a truck hit a rickshaw on Bagerhat-Pirojpur highway at Boitpur in Sadar upazila of Bagerhat district on Monday.
The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.
The accident occurred around 11:30 am when the Pirojpur-bound truck hit the rickshaw, killing one person on the spot, said KM Azizul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.
Besides, three people were injured when an ambulance plunged into a road side ditch after being hit by the truck at the same time.

The injured were taken to the local hospital but another victim died on the way to hospital.
Police seized the truck but could not arrest its driver.

Engineer killed, 4 hurt in Chattogram road crash
An engineer was killed and four people were injured as a CNG-run autorickshaw and a three-wheeler collided in Raozan upazila’s Kaptai Road on Wednesday afternoon.
Deceased Papon Barua Shakil, 41, was the senior engineer (mechanical) of PHP Group and office secretary of Chattogram Diploma Engineers Association. He lived with his family in Mohammadpur residential area of the city.

Raozan Police SI Joynal Abedin said autorickshaw passenger Shakil was killed on the spot after head-on collision between the three-wheeler and the autorickshaw. Four others including autorickshaw driver were injured in the accident.

Iconic Bengali Singer Sandhya Mukherjee Dies At 90
Legendary Bengali singer Sandhya Mukherjee, who worked with leading music directors such as SD Burman, Naushad and Salil Chaudhury, died on Tuesday evening following a massive cardiac attack, said an official of the hospital where she was admitted.
Sandhya Mukherjee was 90. She is survived by a daughter, reports NDTV.
She was in hospital since the last week of January due to ill health. She was put on vasopressor support earlier in the day as her blood pressure dropped.

"She suffered a massive heart attack at around 7.30 PM following which she expired," the senior hospital official told PTI.
The singer had tested positive for Covid-19 along with cardiac ailments, multi-organ dysfunction and fracture in the femur bone due to a fall.
