Man gets death penalty for killing wife in Chapainawabagnj
A Chapainawbaganj court on Monday sentenced a man to death in a case filed over killing his wife in 2019.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Rabiul Islam pronounced the judgment in presence of the convict.
The court also fined the convict Tk 50,000 .

According to case statement, on July, 8, 2019, the convict hacked his wife Ayesha Begum with a sharp weapon over a family feud at their house in Bholahat upazila.
Ayesha succumbed to her injuries on the way to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Later, victim’s brother Md Muslim filed a case against Kobed Ali at Bholahat police station.

Police submitted the charge sheet of the case on September 30 of the same year.
Photojournalist Aftab murder case: HC upholds death penalty for 5 convicts
The High Court on Wednesday upheld the death penalty for the five men and life imprisonment for another person convicted of killing acclaimed photojournalist Aftab Ahmed in 2013.
A division bench of justices Jahangir Hossain and Md Bashir Ullah passed the order after hearing their appeal petitions.
Advocates SM Shahjahan, Helal Uddin Molla and Shafiqul Islam stood for the petitioners, while deputy attorney general Samira Taranum Rabeya Miti represented the state.
On March 28, 2017, Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 judge Abdur Rahman Sardar sentenced the five men to death and another to life imprisonment for the murder of Aftab.
The condemned convicts are Billal Hossain Kislu, Habib Hawladar, Raju Munshi, Russel and driver Humayun Kabir Molla. Of them, Raju Munshi and Russel were tried in absentia.
The lifer has identified as Sabuj Khan. The court also imposed a fine of Tk 10,000 on him.

On December 25, 2013, Aftab of Daily Ittefaq, an Ekushey Padak recipient, was found dead at his West Rampura Wapda Road residence. He was 69.
Driver Humayun, Habib and Billal subsequently made a confessional statement before the court that the convicts had strangled the victim to death while committing robbery in his house.
Billal looted Tk 72,000 from his residence and shared the money with the others involved in the killing, according to police.
Aftab received the coveted Ekushey Padak in 2006.
7 to die for killing AL leader in Mymensingh
A Dhaka court has issued the death penalty to seven persons, including a union parishad chairman, for killing a local Awami League (AL) leader in Mymensingh’s Gauripur upazila in 2020.
The death penalties were awarded to Riyad Uzzaman Riyad, Chairman of Mailakanda union of Gauripur, Sakib Ahmed Reza, Joint General Secretary of Gauripur Municipality Chhatra Dal, Khairul Islam and Mozammel Haque, members of Mymensingh District (north) Swecchasebak Dal and Chhatra Dal activists Main Uddin, Shariful Islam and Ruhul Amin.
They have also been fined Tk 20,000 each.
Besides issuing death penalty, the court has also given life term to three others accused for their involvement in the crime.
The lifers are Masud Parvez aka Curzon, Shariat Ullah aka Sumon and Rasel Mia.
The court also fined the lifers Tk 20,000 each, non-realization of which will languish them six months more in jail.
Judge Monir Kamal of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 handed down the verdict on Monday.

On October 17, 2020, some unidentified assailants hacked Masudur Rahman Shuvro, General Secretary of Gauripur upazila Swecchasebak League, to death in the upazila’s Pan Mohal area at about 10:00pm.
Abidur Rahman, the deceased’s younger brother, filed a murder case with Gauripur Police Station following the incident. On April 27, 2021, Inspector of Detective Branch (DB) Shah Kamal Akanda submitted a charge sheet to the court accusing 19 people for the killing.
On January 26, 2022, the court framed charges against the accused and started the trial process. During the trial, the court collected testimonies from a total of 17 witnesses while nine people bore witness to the accused.
On October 6, 2022, the court set today for pronouncing the verdict after completion of arguments from the prosecution and the defendant.
Netrakona’s Khalilur gets death penalty for crimes against humanity in 1971
International Crimes Tribunal on Tuesday (September 13, 2022) sentenced fugitive criminal Md Khalilur Rahman from Netrakona for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of 1971.
A three-member tribunal led by Justice Shahinur Islam pronounced the death sentence.
Public Prosecutor Rana Dasgupta and Rezia Sultana represented the state during the hearing while state appointed lawyer Gazi MH Tamim appeared for the accused.

PP Rezia Sultana said three of the four accused in this case died during the trial.
The tribunal gave death sentence to Khalilur, then commander of Al Badr, in his absence on Tuesday as he has been absconding, said the PP.
On January 30, 2017, in a press briefing of the probe agency final report on the accused was published.

At first the case had five accused but one of them, Ramzan Ali, died before the trial began.
Other three accused that died during the trial were Khalilur’s brother Azizur Rahman, Ashq Ali and Md Shahnewaz, all residents of Noagaon union in Netrakona.
Charges of illegal detention, torture, abduction, looting, arson, vandalism, attempted rape, rape, murder and genocide in 1971 were brought against the accused in this case.

The charge sheet mentioned that 22 people were killed, one was raped, one attempted rape, two of the four abducted being tortured in a camp, 14 or 15 houses being looted and arson at seven houses.
Death row convict Khalilur was a member of Islami Chhatra Sangha who joined the Razakar forces during the war. Later, he became commander of Al Badr in Chandigarh union. He was known to be a supporter of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Cabinet approves draft of Ansar Battalion Act 2022 with provision of death penalty
The Cabinet on Monday approved the draft of ‘Ansar Battalion Act, 2022’ keeping death penalty as the maximum punishment for serious offenses like attempt to revolt, participation or provocation in such conspiracy.
The approval came from the Cabinet meeting held with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair at her office here.
“If anyone tries to revolt, instigates or participates in conspiracy, the member would face death penalty or life sentence or minimum five-year jail,” said Cabinet Secretary Khandkar Anwarul Islam at a press briefing at Bangladesh Secretariat.

As per the draft law, there will be two separate courts – Summary Ansar Battalion Court and Special Ansar Battalion Court--- to try two types of offenses commited by any member, he said.
The summary court will try general crimes and misconduct, while the special court will try serious crimes, he said, adding that there will also be an Ansar Battalion Appeal Tribunal under the proposed law.
The cabinet secretary said the maximum punishment for general crimes would be three-year jail term.
According to the draft, a member of the Ansar Battalion can’t be a member of any political or non-political organisation.
The Public Security Division designed a fresh law instead of amending the existing law of 1995 as massive changes are required here, he said.
Besides, the meeting in principle approved the draft of ‘Mujibnagar University, Meherpur Act, 2022’ in a bid to establish another public university in the country.
The special features of the proposed university are that the institution will have business incubator and professional course, said Anwarul.

The Cabinet also cleared the draft of ‘Agency to Innovate (A2I) Act, 2022’ placed by the ICT Division to set up an authority for promotion of ICT-based innovation.
As per the draft law, there will be a 16-member governing body headed by minister or state minister or deputy minister, to run the agency.
The meeting cleared the proposal for ratification of 18 Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) adopted under Stockholm Convention on POPs from COP-4 (Conference of the Parties-4) in 2009 to COP-9 in 2019.
The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, a global treaty, was adopted in 2001 to safeguard human health and the environment from highly harmful chemicals that persist in the environment and affect the well-being of humans as well as wildlife.
Man gets death penalty for raping and killing schoolgirl in Tangail
A Tangail court on Monday sentenced a man to death in a case filed over killing a schoolgirl after raping her in 2020.
Tangail Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal judge Khaleda Yasmin passed the order in presence of the convict.
The death row convict is Mazedur Rahman,26, son of Anwar Hossain from Moddhopara village in Tangail sadar upazila.

On September 9, 2020, a fourth grader student of a local school went missing as she went to collect sugarcane from a field beside her home in the afternoon. Later in the evening her body was recovered from a bush near her house, said Public prosecutor advocate Ali Ahmed.
Next day, Mazedur was arrested from his home after a case was filed at Tangail sadar police station in this regard followed by a complaint lodged by the victim's brother.
In primary interrogation Mazedur confessed to strangulate the girl to death with her scarf after raping her. He also gave a confessional statement before court.

3 brothers to hang for killing uncle in Cox’s Bazar
A Chattogram court on Sunday sentenced three brothers to death in a case filed over abducting and then killing their uncle by slitting his throat in Chakaria upazila in Cox’s Bazar.
The court sentenced another brother to life imprisonment and acquitted one more accused from charges during the hearing.
Chattogram divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Mozammel Haque passed the verdict during a hearing.

The death row convicts are Abu Bakkar Siddique, Yunus Manik, and Ibrahim Mostafa Kaiyum, sons of Nurul Ajiz from Maganpara village in Badarkhali union of the upazila.
The lifer is their brother Md Sohayet.
The court also fined Tk 50,000 each to the death row convicts and Tk 10,000 to the lifer.
Except Abu Bakkar Siddique, all the others were sentenced in absentia, said Public Prosecutor of the court Ayub Khan.
On June 30, 2016, victim Nurul Huda, then president of the union faction of Awami League, was at a tea stall in Badarkhali Bazar and commented, “All the war criminals will get hanged one by one”.

Abu Bakkar got into an argument with Huda over the comment, and abducted his uncle later assisted by other accused in an auto-rickshaw and killed him.
On July 2, 2016, a case was filed at Chakaria police station following a complaint by Nurul Huda’s son Mohammad Shahjahan.
Zakia murder in Gopalganj: Husband, 3 others get death penalty
A Dhaka Court on Thursday sentenced four people to death for torturing Zakia Mollik to death over dowry in Gopalganj in 2016.
The death-row convicts are --Zakia’s husband Morshedayan Nishan, his brother Ehsan Sushan, brother-in-law Hasan Sheikh and their employee Anisur Rahman.
Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-2 Judge Md Jakir Hossain handed down the judgment.
The court also fined Zakia’s husband Morshedayan Tk 5 lakh and the others Tk 3 lakh each.

According to the case, Zakia was tortured to death at Bedgram in Gopalganj district on February 5 in 2016 as she failed to bring money from her father’s house as dowry.
Later, Zakia’s father Jalal Uddin Mollik lodged a complaint at Gopalganj Police Station against four including Zakia’s husband.
The investigating officer in the case submitted a chargesheet against the four accused to the court on June 9 in 2016.

On September 7 of the same year, the court framed charges against the accused.
5 to die for murder in Madaripur
A Madaripur court on Monday sentenced five people to death for killing a woman after abduction in 2002.
Madaripur Additional District and Sessions Judge Lailatul Ferdous handed down the judgment.
The condemned convicts are Ashok Boidya, Tarani Boidya, Gouranga Boidya—sons of Chaitanna Boidya -- Kalu Biswas, son of Podo Biswas, Bijoy Bepari and Naren Boiragi of Rajoir upazila.
Of them, Bijoy tried in absentia while Gouranga died during trial proceedings.

The court also fined them Tk 50,000 each.
According to the prosecution, Bishnupodo Boidya, son of Gurupodo and Ashok Boidya, Tarani Boidya, Gouranga Boidya of Ambagan village in the upazila had been at loggerheads over the ownership of a piece of land.
On October 14, 2002, the convicts abducted Radha Rani, wife of Gurupodo on his way back home from a temple.
After 10 days, police recovered the body of Radha Rani from a water-body of the village.

Later, a case was filed in this connection. Police submitted a chargesheet against six people, including Ashok Boidya, Tarani Boidya, Gouranga Boidya, Kalu Biswas, Bijoy Bepari and Naren Boiragi.
Brahmanbaria AL leader murder: 13 to die, 8 get life term
A Dhaka court on Sunday sentenced 13 people to death in a case over the murder of a local Awami League leader in 2016.
The court also sentenced eight other accused to life imprisonment.
Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 Judge Abu Jafar Kamruzzaman pronounced the judgment.

The condemned convicts are Basu Miah, Kabir Miah, Mokhles, Sachhu Miah, Jahangir Miah,Shahibur Rahman Shukki, Liakat Ali, Yunus Miah, Rahmat Ullah alias Fariaj Miah, Shithil Ahmed alias Fahim Ahmed, Saiful, Pavel and Ali Miah.
Among them, Fariaj, Shithil, Saiful, Pavel and Ali Miah were tried in absentia.
The lifers are Nurul Islam, Habibur Rahman, Russel, Maju Miah, Golap Miah, Sohel Miah, Shajahan and Borhan alias Ruhan. They were fined Tk 50,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more rigorous imprisonment.
According to the case statement, on Nov 14, 2016, Zohirul Haque , a businessman and Natai Dakkhin Ward-5 Awami League (AL) general secretary, was returning home in Poyag from Paurtala bus stand in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw.

The convicts including Basu Mia, Habibur Rahman, Shahibur Rahman alias Shukki, Kabir Mia, Sachchu Mia, Mokhlech Mia, Ruhan alias Borhan, Shithil Ahmed alias Fahim Ahmed, Rahmat Ullah Fariyaz attacked Zohirul Haque on the way and stabbed him mercilessly
Locals caught two of them- Shithil and Fariyaz- and handed over to police.
Zahirul Haque died in the evening while undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Kabir Hossain, younger brother of the deceased, filed a murder case at Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station in this regard.
The investigation officer of the case submitted a chargesheet against 21 accused.
