Road crash leaves elderly man dead in Narail
A 60-year-old elderly man died as a three-wheeler rammed into him on the Kalia-Gopalganj road in Kalia upazila of the district on Tuesday.
The deceased--Moslem Mollah, was son of late Kuti Miah of Parbasona village under the upazila.
Sheikh Taslim Alam, officer-in-charge of Kalia police station, said the accident happened around 2pm when the three-wheeler easybike hit Moslemwhile he was crossing the road in Kalinagar area, leaving him critically injured.

Later, locals rushed him to Upazila health complex where physicians declared him dead upon arrival, he said.
Apart from this details on the road mishap could not be known.
Narail boat capsize: Death toll climbs to 5
The death toll from the boat capsize in the Nabaganga River in Narail rose to five with the recovery of one body on Monday.
Sheikh Tasmim Alam, officer-in-charge of Kalia Police Station, said the divers from local fire service fished out the body of Royel Par, son of Imamul Mandal of Bahirdanga village around 3:30 pm.
Another victim identified as Mahmud Sheikh, 41, son of Khalek Sheikh of Kalia village and son-in-law of Enamul Mandal, still remained missing since the boat capsized.
Efforts are on to find Mahmud, he added.

The bodies of Labu, 32, son of Tuku Chowkidar of Babupur village, and Khanze Sheikh, 55, son of Matiar Sheikh of Jokar Char village, were recovered on Sunday.
The boat with 17 people on board capsized around 8:30 pm while heading towards Bahirdanga from Baghbari of Kalia municipality. Ten of them managed to swim to ashore.

The bodies of Labu, 32, son of Tuku Chowkidar of Babupur village, and Khanze Sheikh, 55, son of Matiar Sheikh of Jokar Char village, were recovered today.
Fire service divers fished out the bodies from the Nabaganga River in Kalia upazila, said Sheikh Tasmeem Alam, office-in-charge (OC) of Kalia police station.

“The bodies were handed over to the Naval Police. They will take necessary legal steps,” said OC Tasmeem.
Efforts are on to find the others who went missing after the accident, he added.

2 ‘thieves’ lynched in Narail
Two suspected thieves were killed in a lynch-mob attack at Birgram in Sadar upazila of Narail district early Monday.
Among them, one was identified as Asadul Sheikh, 36, of Bagerhat.

A gang of cattle lifters entered the cowshed of Rebo Biswas in Birgram around 3.30am, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Narail Sadar Police Station Md Mahmudur Rahman.
Sensing the presence of the thieves, local people surrounded them and caught two of them while the others managed to flee.
The villagers beat up the two suspected thieves, leaving them dead, said the OC.

Later, police recovered the bodies from Narail-Gobra road and sent those to Narail Sadar Hospital morgue.
Besides, a case was filed in this regard, he added.
Narail college principal welcomed with floral garlands as he joins work after 45 days
Swapan Kumar Biswas, acting principal of Mirzapur United College in Narail, returned to work on Wednesday, 45 days after he was humiliated following a rumor over a Facebook post by a student.
The teachers and students welcomed Swapan Kumar at the college campus at 12 pm with floral garlands, said Advocate Achin Chakraborty, president of Mirzapur College Board of Directors.
Meanwhile, the students have started coming to the college after reopening of the college of July 24. But police are still deployed on the college campus to avoid any untoward incidents.
The college remained closed for 36 days after the incident
At first classes of 12the grade resumed and then classes of 11th grade and degree level resumed gradually.
On July 17, the High Court ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident. The National University and the Directorate of Secondary & Higher Education have already completed two separate investigations.
After the investigation, the National University issued a show-cause notice on the governing body of the college and Akhtar Hossain, a lecturer of the political science department of the college.
On June 18, a Hindu student of Mirzapur United Degree College made a post on Facebook supporting suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.
There was day-long unrest in the college over the post and rumors that acting principal Swapan Kumar Biswas had sided with the student, following which police escorted him out of the campus but not before he was garlanded with shoes.

The college was announced closed on that day.
A video of the incident also went viral on social media that sparked huge criticism.
Different organisations, including Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, lodged protests over the incident and demanded exemplary punishment of those involved in it.
Later, the accused, who made the Facebook post, was arrested and a case was filed against him under the Digital Security Act.
On June 27, three more were arrested in another case filed at the Sadar Police Station police for setting teachers’ vehicles on fire and obstructing police duty.
Police also arrested Rahmat Ullah Roni, the prime accused in this case, from Khulna on June 29.
The day before reopening of the college, police arrested Ripon Sheikh Ripu,16, a student of class eleven of the college, for being involved in setting fire to motorcycles of the teachers after identifying him from the video footage.
So far nine people, including four students of the college, have been arrested over the incident, said Md Mahamudur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Narail Sadar police station and also investigation officer of the case.
Narail road accidents claim two lives
One person was killed and another succumbed to his injuries Monday after being critically injured in road accidents in Narail Sadar upazila, police said.
The deceased were identified as Milon Biswas, 24, and Turjo, 35.
Milon was hit by a motorcycle when he was collecting money for the truck workers' union at a bus terminal around 9am.

Locals rushed the critically injured man to Jashore Medical College where he was declared dead upon arrival.
In another accident, Turjo sustained injuries after falling off his motorbike a few days back and was undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation.
He died this morning, Mahmudur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Narail Sadar Police Station, said.

Another student held over Narail teacher humiliation
Police have arrested another student of Mirzapur United College in a case over the humiliation of acting principal Swapan Kumar Biswas in Narail Sadar Upazila as the college reopened on Sunday after closure of 36-days.
The arrestee was identified as Ripon Sheikh Ripu,16, son of Afzal Sheikh and a student of class eleven at Mirzapur United College, said Mahmudur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of the sadar police station.
He was arrested Saturday night for being involved in setting fire to motorcycles of the teachers after identifying him from the video footage, said the OC.
On Sunday, earlier arrested student Rayhan was put on a three-day remand starting from Monday by the cognizance court of Judicial Magistrate Amatul Murshida. Meanwhile, police did not seek remand for Ripon as he is still a minor.

So far eight people have been arrested over the incident.
No students were present Sunday at Mirzapur United College and only 10 to 12 teachers came until noon.
Additional District Magistrate Jubayer Hossain Chowdhury told UNB, “The college has reopened after a long closure and the teachers have been asked to inform all the students about it. At first classes of 12 th grade will begin and then classes of 11 th and degree level will resume gradually.”
However, a teacher of the college said, “We were informed about the college reopening around 12 pm today and were asked to attend it.”
Meanw,hile the humiliated acting principal Swapan Kumar has not returned to his quarters at the college campus since the incident.

“The decision to reopen the college was taken on Saturday after 9 pm. As it was a sudden decision it took time to inform all the teachers. Principal Swapan Kumar will join the college after remaining on vacation for several days”, said Advocate Achin Chakraborty, president of the college governing body.

Attackers on Hindus in Narail to be punished: State Minister
State Minister for Religious Affairs Md Faridul Haque Khan said attackers on the Hindu community in Lohagara upazila of Narail will get punishment under law.
He came up with the assertion while briefing journalists after an agreement signing ceremony at Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday.
“You (Journalists) have seen who are responsible for the attack on Hindus. Attackers have already been arrested. They will have to face the music now. We want justice whoever they are. Offenders will be given punishment insallah,” said the minister.

Faridul said, “I visited the spot on July 15 and 19. I think the whole situation was brought under control by the local Awami League and its associate organisations. The situation could have worsened further if they did not give protection to the Hindus.”
“We have visited Narail at the direction of the prime minister to calm down the situation and held a cross-religion dialogue there.”
Mentioning that the defeated forces of the country’s Liberation War are still active, the state minister said their (defeated forces) main target is to destabilise the country by creating anarchy.
“They don’t want to see Bangladesh as a non-communal state. They want Bangladesh as like Pakistan or Afghanistan.”
The state minister also said some vested quarters are trying to foil the election process as the next general election is knocking on the door.
Following a Facebook post on Friday evening, a mob vandalized a temple, grocery shops, and several homes of the Hindu community in the Digholia Bazar area under the Lohagara upazila of the district.

The mob took to the streets, attacking and vandalizing several homes on the allegation that a youth named Akash Saha had hurt their religious sentiments through a post on Facebook.
They also broke into and vandalized the Saha Para temple, as well as several shops.
Narail teacher humiliation: HC orders judicial inquiry
The High Court on Monday ordered judicial probe into the humiliation of acting principal of Mirzapur United College Swapan Kumar Biswas in Narail Sadar Upazila.
The court also asked Narail's Chief Judicial Magistrate to investigate the incident and submit a report within the next 6 weeks.
A vacation bench of Justices Bhishmadev Chakrabortty and SM Moniruzzaman passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK).

Advocates ZI Khan Panna and Aneek R Haque stood for the writ petitioner while advocate Samarendra Nath Biswas represented the state.
Earlier on July 4, Advocate Lutfe Jahan Purnima, on behalf of Ain O Salish Kendra, filed a writ petition seeking judicial probe into the humiliation of Narail college teacher Swapan Kumar Biswas over a Facebook post by a student.

Narail vandalism: College student put on 3-day remand
Narail court has placed college student Akash Saha on a three-day remand in a case over a Facebook post that allegedly hurt religious sentiment in Lohagara upazila of the district.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Morshedul Alam passed order on Sunday after investigating officer of the case Makfur Rahman, also sub-inspector (SI) of Lohagara police station, sought a seven-day remand to interrogate him.
Police arrested Akash Saha from Khulna Saturday night.
Besides, another case was filed against 200 to 250 people at Lohagara police station on Sunday night in connection with the vandalism of houses and shops and attacks on two temples in Sahapara, said Sheikh Abu Hena Milon, officer-in-charge of the police station.

On Friday, an angry mob went on a rampage in Lohagara upazila of Narail district damaging at least two houses of the Hindu community and several shops at Digholia Bazar following the Facebook post by the youth.
Haran Chandra Pal, officer-in-charge of Lohagara police station, said the college student belonging to the Hindu community posted a remark on Facebook hurting religious sentiments on Friday.
As the news spread like wildfire, a group of local people thronged Digholia Bazar and vandalised two houses and six shops that night. They also set one of these houses on fire over the issue, the OC said.
They also vandalised chairs and sound boxes of Shahapara temple and tin roof of Akhrabari temple during the mayhem.
On information, police rushed to the spot and fired in the air to bring the situation under control. Additional police forces were deployed in the area to avert further trouble.
