One to die for killing sister in Narail
A court here on Monday sentenced a man to death for killing his sister in 2019.
The condemned convict is Ripon Molla, 42, son of Moksed Molla of Kalinagar village in Naragati upazila of the district.
The court also fined him Tk 20,000.
According to the prosecution, Ripon killed his sister Fatema, 20, by drowning in a pond on November 25, 2019 over previous enmity.

He also hit Fatema with a stick for ensuing her death. Later, he concealed the body the mud of the pond.
Ripon’s son Rashed Molla disclosed the matter when all were searching Fatema.
Later, they recovered the body and informed police.

Police arrested Ripon and a case was filed in this connection on that day.
After hearing records and witnesses, Narail District and Sessions Judge Munshi Mohammad Mashier Rahman handed down the verdict.
SM Sultan’s 97th birth anniversary today
Tuesday marks the 97th birth anniversary of renowned artist SM Sultan.
He was born at Machimdia village in Narail sadar upazila on this day in 1924.
Celebrating the birth of the eminent art genius, the Narail district administration and SM Sultan Foundation are jointly observing the day with a handful of events.

Due to the ongoing pandemic situation of Covid-19, the birth anniversary of this great artist is being celebrated on a limited scale with due dignity through various programs initiated by the district administration and SM Sultan Foundation, Narail, according to the media cell of the Narail district administration.
The programmes included recitation from the holy Qur’an, placing floral wreaths at the grave of the artist, a prayer session and a discussion on the life of the artist, organized at the SM Sultan Complex on Tuesday morning.
Mohammad Habibur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of Narail, laid a floral wreath at the legendary artist’s grave, on behalf of district administration and Artist SM Sultan Foundation, Narail. Tributes were also paid by various governmental and non-governmental social and cultural organizations including District Police, Narail Press Club, District Shilpakala Academy, Sammilita Sangskritik Jote and more.
IPDC Extends Partnership with NEF Sports Academy
To promote sports in Narail district, the IPDC Finance Ltd signed an agreement with Mashrafe Bin Mortaza’s Narail Express Foundation (NEF) at IPDC Head Office in Gulshan.
The private sector NBFI has come forward to ensure all kinds of support to NEF in order to maintain the standard of the sports training facility since 2018. Last year, IPDC helped the Foundation build a gymnasium in Narail, the inauguration of which is to take place by the end of the year.
Under the new agreement, IPDC Finance has committed to extend its support for NEF's vision of providing sports training in the district for the next five years.

NEF Founding Chairman and the former captain of Bangladesh national cricket team, Mashrafe said: “I had only dreamt of changing the landscape of Narail in terms of education, health, ICT, culture, and sports through NEF. The sports academy currently trains 60 cricket, football, and volleyball players between the age of 16-18 years. The group is being trained to introduce strong international players in the future, besides supporting their education, accommodation, and health care.
Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and IPDC Finance Managing Director and CEO Mominul Islam signed the partnership agreement on behalf of their respective organizations. Other high officials were also present at the signing ceremony.
Night curfew imposed in three Narail municipalities
Authorities on Saturday imposed a week-long night curfew in three municipalities and three unions of Narail's Sadar upazila to break the chain of Covid-19 transmission in the district.
The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the District Coronavirus Prevention Committee on Friday night, in view of a surge in Covid cases in the three municipalities and the three unions.

Deputy Commissioner Habibur Rahman said the curfew will remain in force from 6 pm to 8 am in Narail, Lohagara and Kalia municipalities, and Kalor, Singasholepur and Bichali unions of Sadar upazila.
Legal action will be initiated against anyone found violating the restrictions and Covid-safety protocols.

No hotel vacancy in Benapole and Narail
Bangladeshis returning from India through Benapole checkpost are being sent to hotels in Khulna for 14-days quarantine.
Since Saturday, India-returnees have been sent to Khulna.
After all the 12 hotels and a madrasa in Benapole were filled with people from India by Thursday, they were sent to the hotels in Narail on Friday.

To cope with overwhelming crowd of returnees, this step has been taken.
Every day, Bangladeshis stuck in India are returning in groups through Benapole checkpost.

Most of the stranded passengers were staying in India for treatment.
About 70 Bangladeshis returned to the country by 3 pm on Sunday.
They were taken to Khulna under special arrangements.

So far 1199 people have returned from India after the lockdown.
As per the government instructions, the returnees are being kept in 14-day institutional quarantine.

3 women held in Narail over assaulting police officers
Three women were arrested in Lohagara of Narail on Friday over assaulting two police officers.
The arrestees were identified as Sohana (29), Selina Begum (42) and Jahanara Begum (55).
The arrests were made following a case filed by ASI Mikail Hossain with Lohagara Police station against 16 named and 25/30 unnamed offenders. The principal accused is Dighlia union Awami League unit president Wahidur Rahmnan Sardar.

According to sources, ASI Mir Alamgir was injured with sharp weapons on Thursday morning when he tried to intervene in a clash between two groups of villagers. His pistol was also snatched away from him during the lynching. ASI Mikail was also severely injured when he stepped forward to save his colleague.
ASI Alamgir is currently undergoing treatment at Lohagara Hospital. His pistol was recovered two hours after the incident.
Syed Ashiqur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Lohagara Police Station, confirmed the news to UNB. He said the other accused in the case would be arrested very soon.
3 women detained for ‘snatching pistol from police’ in Narail
Three women have been detained from Narail’s Lohagara Upazila for allegedly snatching a pistol from police during a clash.
The detainees are – Jahanara Chowdhury, Selina and Sohana.
Freedom fighter Yusuf Sardar’s daughter Soheli said her brothers had gone to Mauli village to rescue their cousin Bulu Sardar who was reportedly being held and tortured at a house.
“Police obstructed my brothers and an altercation ensued. A policeman dropped a pistol during the scuffle but we returned it,” she said, accusing police of attacking her party, assault and vandalism.
“My father, freedom fighter Yusuf Sardar’s nose was broken,” she said.
Freedom fighter Asad Sardar, the brother of Yusuf, said the policemen assaulted his sister-in-law and daughter-in-law and hurled verbal abuse towards them.
Police said two groups led by Ohidur Sardar of Kumri village and Firoz Sheikh of Lutia village had been at loggerheads over establishing supremacy. As they two groups locked horns, two police officers managed to dissuade Firoz’s group.
But they were attacked by 20-25 people when they tried to dissuade Ohidur’s group.
Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Police Mikail Hossain has received first aid. ASI Mir Alamgir has been hacked with a sharp weapon in his head and left elbow. He has also been hit with a blunt object.
“A pistol with eight bullets was snatched from ASI Alamgir. It was recovered around 2:30pm from near a mosque,” Lohagara Police Station’s OC Syed Ashikur Rahman said. “We’re taking legal action.”
