Raped by two, eighth grader ends life in Joypurhat
Eleven days after she was allegedly raped, a Class VIII student ended her life in Khetlal upazila of Joypurhat district on Thursday night.
According to her family members, the girl took the extreme step unable to bear the trauma and embarrassment. She allegedly committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling of her house.
The alleged rape occurred on November 7 when the teen was returning home around 5 pm after attending a ceremony in her high school.

Shahinur, a local youth, offered to drop her on his motorcycle but instead took her to an abandoned school building and allegedly raped her. His friend too came to the spot took turn to violate her. The girl was later rescued by local residents.
On November 8, a case of sexual harassment was filed against Rafikul and Shahinur following a complaint lodged at the Khetlal police station by the girl's family.
However, the accused remained absconding while the girl’s family claimed that they had been being threatened by the accused.

Officer-in-charge of Khetlal police station Nirendranath Mandal said that "efforts are on to arrest the accused in the sexual harassment case".
“Another case will be filed against the accused if evidence of abetment to suicide is found during the investigation," he said.
4 Joypurhat Jamaat leaders held for allegedly planning vandalism
Police arrested four Jamaat-e-Islami leaders including Joypurhat district Ameer (chief) and secretary of the organization on Monday from Kalai upazila.
The detainees were identified as district Jamaat Ameer Dr Fazlur Rahman Sayeed, 58, Secretary Golam kibria,53, Kalai upazila Jamaat Ameer Munsur Rahman,49, and former Ameer Nuruzzaman Sarkar,63.
Officer-in-charge of Kalai police station 0Selim Malik said, tipped off that some Jamaat members will hold a secret meeting at the ground floor of Abdus Samad Talukdar Market in Kalai upazila they conducted a raid and nabbed those four leaders.

The leaders had gathered for planning a vandalism attack, said the OC.
Case filing is under process against the Jamaat men under the Special Powers Act, he said.
However, each of them has multiple cases of vandalism against their names, said OC Selim.

Rangpur: 1 arrested in Joypurhat under DSA, 42 for arson
Joypurhat police have arrested a person under the Digital Security Act (DSA) and 42 others in connection to attacks that took place in Rangpur against the minority Hindu community, in which their houses were set ablaze.
Poritosh Sarkar of Pirganj was arrested on Monday under DSA for spreading hate through social media posts that provoked people to set fire to the houses of the minorities, said additional police commissioner Kamruzzaman.

Till Monday night 42 others had been arrested in connection to arson, he said.
Attempts are being made to arrest the rest involved in the incident, he added.

Viral video: 1 held in Joypurhat for torturing child
Police have arrested a woman in Joypurhat’s Khetlal Upazila for allegedly tying up a child to a tree and torturing her in public.
The arrestee was identified as Beli Begum, a local tea stall owner.
On Sunday Beli was produced before the court, confirmed Joypurhat additional superintendent of police Tariqul Islam.
According to locals, the incident occurred on Saturday around 5 pm at Dhantala-Chaumuhoni Bazar of the upazila.

When tea stall owner Beli found Tk 200 missing from the cash counter she suspected the nine-year-old school girl. She grabbed the child when she was playing with her children.
Beli slapped and beat the girl and later tied her to a tree.
After a video of the torture went viral on social media police went to the spot, rescued the child and held the torturer Beli Begum.

Khetlal police on Saturday night filed a case against Beli and another woman Rahima Begum in this regard.
However, police have not yet been able to arrest Rahima Begum.
Man gets 72-year sentence for rape and kidnap of minor in Joypurhat
A man was sentenced a total of 72-years imprisonment on Tuesday for the kidnapping and rape of a ninth-grade student in Joypurhat in 2018.
District Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Md Rustom Ali passed the order comprising 60-years in jail with a fine of Tk 17 lakh for the rape and 12 years for the kidnapping.
The convict is Abdul Momin Akhand, 25, resident of Bambu union in Joypurhat sadar upazila.

According to the complaint, on September 3, 2018, Abdul Momin abducted the victim from in front of her school in Dharki-Borail Para area with six assistants and later raped her serially.
On September 5, the victim’s father filed a kidnapping and rape case against six at Joypurhat police station.
After three months of the incident, police rescued the victim during a drive and arrested accused Abdul Momin.

On December 31, 2018, police submitted charge sheet against Momin and spared all the other accused.
1 arrested in Joypurhat over vandalism of Hindu temples
Police on Saturday arrested a youth from Joypurhat Sadar for his alleged involvement in vandalising two Hindu temples .
The arrestee has been identified as Shamsul Alam alias Lalbabu (34).
Confirming the news, Joypurhat Sadar upazila told UNB that idols which were being created ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja were vandalised in two temples on Friday night.

Birendranath Sikder, filed a case with Joypurhat Sadar Police Station on Saturday over the vandalism naming Shamsul Alam as the main accused.
Joypurhat District Superintendent of Police Mashum Ahmed Bhunya said,”Already the main accused in the case has been arrested and others involved will follow him soon. There will be zero tolerance against anything which threatens the communal harmony of the nation.”
Man gets 60 years imprisonment for violating 2 girls in Joypurhat
A Joypurhat tribunal on Tuesday sentenced a man to 60 years imprisonment for violating two girls.
The convict is Abu Salam, 54, son of Bachchu Molla of Panchbibi upazila.
Joypurhat Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Rustam Ali handed down the verdict.

The tribunal also fined Salam Tk 3 lakh, in default to suffer three years more rigorous imprisonment. He was tried in absentia.
According to the prosecution, Salam took the two victims aged between 10-11 years to his house saying that he will allow them to watch television and gave them Tk 10 each on July 14, 2017.
Later, they violated the girls in turns after showing a knife to them.

Later, the girls were rescued by local people and they were taken to Joypurhat District Hospital.
Police arrested Salam following the statement of local people. However, Salam secured bail from the court and went into hiding.
6 held for running porn racket in Joypurhat
Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested six youths for allegedly running a porn racket in Khetlal upazila.
The arrestees are Mehedi Hasan, 26, Faruk Hossain, 28, Arman Hossain, 28, Sujan Haldar, 24, Eklashur Rahman, 21, and Shahinur Rahman, 27, of the upazila.

RAB-5 Joypurhat camp sources said that a team, led by Lt Commander Toukir, raided Battali Bazar and arrested the six youths on Tuesday night, acting on a tip-off.
Six CPUs, 10 hard disks, eight monitors, 16 cables and six mouse pieces were also seized during the drive.
After interrogation, the accused were handed over to the Khetlal police station. A case has been filed under the Pornography Control Act, the sources added.
UP member arrested for setting rickshaw puller’s legs on fire
Police have arrested a Joypurhat UP member for allegedly setting fire to a rickshaw puller’s legs.
The arrestee is Rafikul Islam (52), UP member of ward 7 in Banbu union of the Sadar upazila.
Victim Tota Mia (33) is currently admitted to Joypurhat Modern Hospital with severe burn injuries.
The incident happened in Dharki village of Bambu union on Saturday night, when according to the victim’s family and police, some people called Tota Mia out of his house to a nearby field around 10 pm.
They accused him of stealing a cow that went missing on Friday. Without any corroborating proof, the perpetrators tied Tota to a tree, poured petrol on his legs and set him on fire.
He was taken to Joypurhat Modern Hospital’s emergency department as he lost consciousness at one point.
On Sunday, Tota’s wife Dolly Begum filed a case in Joypurhat police station accusing UP member Rafikul Islam and five others.
Officer-in-Charge of Joypurhat Sadar police station, AKM Alamgir Jahan said, "Following the case we have arrested Rafikul Islam on Sunday and sent him to jail, for being involved in the incident."
Efforts are ongoing to detain the other accused, the OC said.
‘JMB member’ held in Joypurhat
Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU), a specialized wing of Bangladesh Police, arrested an alleged active member of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) from Joypurhat district early Saturday.
