Man dies in C’nawabganj police custody; Police say suicide
An accused in a narcotics case died at Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Afsar Ali, 35, son of Mohsin Ali, of Tikrampur, in Chapainawabganj Municipality.
Mahbub Alam Khan, additional superintendent of C’nawabganj Police, said “Ali took an electric wire of a fan at the jail and hanged himself from the fan at 7:20pm shortly after he was brought to the police station for remand.”
After seeing him through a Close Circuit Camera, police immediately took him to Sadar Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead, the ASP added.
According to police, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members arrested Ali with 1.195kg heroin from Bagdanga area in Sadar upazila Sunday noon and handed him over to police.
A court put him on a one- day remand although police sought a five-day remand after producing him before the court on the day after he was arrested with drugs.
Additional District Magistrate Jakiul Islam visited the spot on Monday night and told journalists that he will go to see the body on Tuesday.
“The reason of the death will be informed later,” he said.
Ansar member electrocuted in Chapainawabganj
An Ansar member died from electrocution at Notun Bazar of Sadar upazila on Tuesday noon.
Nor’wester damages 40 houses in Chapainawabganj
At least 40 houses were damaged after a nor’wester hit two villages in Gomostapur upazila on Monday night.
Mizanur Rahman, Rohonpur union parishad member, said that the seasonal storm lashed Kajigram and Kolokolia villages shortly after evening.
The storm damaged around 60 houses, at least one hundred trees and several electric poles.
But Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mizanur Rahman said that at least 40 houses were damaged in the storm.
A list will be made of the affected people to help them, he said.
Nor'wester, locally known as Kal-boishakhi, usually blows over Bangladesh in April and May. It coincides with the setting of the summer season.
2 health workers among 9 infected with Covid-19 in Chapainawabganj
Nine people, including two health workers ,were infected with coronavirus in the district, raising the number of such cases here to 11.
Civil Surgeon Dr Zahid Nazrul Chowdhury, said report of 84 people was received from Rajshahi Medical College Hospital on Wednesday and found nine people infected.
Of those, three people are from Sadar upazila, three from Nachole upazila, two from Bholahat and one from Shibganj upazila of the district, he said.
All of them were sent on home quarantine, he added.
The country has so fir confirmed 186 deaths and 11,719 coronavirus cases.
Chapainawabganj mango growers worried over marketing amid virus restrictions
Mango growers in Chapainawabganj, known as the mango capital of the country , are passing their days in great worries as the marketing of their produce has become uncertain amid the restrictions imposed to slow down coronavirus transmissions.
Local farmers said if the situation does not improve they will have to count huge financial losses in this season.
Mango is the main cash crop of Chapainawabganj. Hundreds of delicious varieties of mangoes, including Gopalbhog, Khirsapat, Langra and Fazli are produced in the district.
Mangoes produced here are supplied to different parts of the country alongside meeting the local demand and are also exported to other countries. Mango harvesting will start in mid-May.
