Dozen killed on roads in 5 districts
Twelve people were killed and fourteen others injured in several road accidents in Bogura, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Cumilla and Pabna districts on Friday.
In Bogura, two unidentified people were killed and ten others injured in a head-on collision between two buses belonging to ‘Kaliyakour Paribahan and Naogan Travels Paribahan’ at Ghoga bridge area on the Dhaka-Borgua highway at around 3:30pm, said Siddikur Rahman, an officer of Sherpur Fire service and civil defense station.
The injured were undergoing treatment at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College, said Baniul Alam, in-charge of Sherpur highway police camp.
In Gazipur, three motorcycle riders were killed and a minor child was also injured when a private car hit their bike on the Konabari flyover in Gazipur on Friday noon.
The deceased were identified as Raju Islam, 26, Md Shamim, 26 and Shahin Islam, 31; all the victims hailed from Konabari’s Dewliyapara area.
Md Shakhawat Imtiaz, a Sub-Inspector (SI) of Konabari police station, said the three youths met the tragic end when the private car hit their bike while crossing the Konabari flyover on Friday noon.
In Narayanganj, a private university student was killed and three others were injured when a bus of ‘Soudia Paribahan’ crashed into a private car carrying the victims in Narayanganj’s Dariyakandi area on Friday.
The deceased was identified as twenty-year-old Mahima, a third-year student in the English department of East West University while identities of the injured could not be known immediately, said Nabir Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kanchpur Highway Police Station.
In Sirajganj, two people were killed when an unidentified truck hit their pickup van on the Hatikumrul-Banparra highway in Tarash upazila Friday early.
The deceased have been identified as pickup van driver Kiron Mridha, 28, son of late Abdul Karim of Duttakanai village in Gurudaspur upazila of Natore district, and his assistant Jahangir Alam, 47, a resident of Sirajganj municipality.
Md Lutfur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Hatikumrul highway police station, said the accident happened at around 7: am when the unidentified truck crashed into the pickup van that got stranded on the highway after it had gone out of order.
The accident left the duo dead on the spot; he said adding that the victims were repairing the vehicle during the accident, said the OC.
In Cumilla, a former headmaster of a government primary school was killed when a speedy motorcycle hit him while crossing road in Aungaura area on the Gouripur-Homna regional in Daudkandi upazila road at noon.
The deceased was identified as Md Jahirul Hoque, 82, former headmaster of Gouripur Government Primary School and also a resident of Aungaura village.
In Pabna, three motorcycle riders were killed in a head-on collision between their motorbike and a pickup van at Nagardemra of Sathia upazila in the district on Friday afternoon.
The identities of the deceased could not be ascertained immediately, said Asif Mohammad Siddikul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sathia police station.
The accident occurred at around 5:30 pm when the vehicles collided head-on at Chhoto Pathaihat Gorostan area in the upazila, he added.
Mentionable, At least 2,329 people, including 291 women and 381 children, were killed and 4,361 others injured in 2,159 road accidents across the country in the first half of the current year, says a new report by the Road Safety Foundation.
The road accidents took place on highways, national, inter-district and regional roads between January 1 and June 30 across the country.
Denied Eid dress, teen ends life in Pabna
A 15-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide in her house in
Pabna on Thursday as her parents could not buy her a dress for Eid-ul-Azha.
The deceased was identified as Lata Khatun, a ninth grade student of Pachuria Muktijoddha Adarsha High School and daughter of Rowshan Ali from Bara Dahapara village of Pachuria union.
Her father Rowshan Ali said, “We could only buy a dress for Lata’s brother Nayan this Eid due to financial constraints. Probably, my daughter was hurt and hanged herself from the ceiling around 9pm.”

Both Lata’s parents went to meet their another daughter, Shathi Khatun, when Nayan found her sister hanging from the ceiling, said Md jalal Uddin, officer-in-charge of Chatmohar police station.
A case of unnatural death has been filed in this regard, he said.
Fugitive convicted for attempt to assassinate Hasina in 1994 lands in Pabna jail
A court here on Monday sent Zakaria Pintu, fugitive death row convict of a case filed over the attack on a train carrying the then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina in 1994, to jail.
He was produced before court around 2 pm and the court directed to send him to Pabna jail, said Ataur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Detective Branch of Pabna police.
On Saturday night, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Zakaria Pintu, 50, of Ishwardi, from Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar during a drive.

Pintu was former general secretary of BNP and then general secretary of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal in 1994.
Pintu was transferred to Ishwardi police station on Sunday and was kept under the custody of district DB police, said OC Ataur Rahman.
During primary interrogation, Pintu confessed that he was a fugitive accused of carrying out bomb attack on a train at Ishwardi railway station with the intention of killing the now Prime Minister.
Pintu was convicted in two murder case in Ishwardi in 1994 and in 2009. He was later arrested along with arms by law enforcers in 2011 and sentenced to 17 years in jail in an arms case.
Apart from the death sentence and imprisonment, there are six arrest warrants and 19 cases filed against him over various crimes, including terrorist activities, establishing dominance and extortion.
In 2015, he also took part in a local election in Pabna's Ishwardi as an independent candidate and lost it.
On September 23 in 1994, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was travelling to Syedpur from Khulna in a train and was attacked with bombs and gunshots at Ishwardi Railway station, as per the release.
A case was filed under the Explosives Act and Special Powers Act at Ishwardi GRP Police Station in Pabna in this regard.
Later, the investigating officer of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) submitted a chargesheet against a total of 52 people on April 3 in 1997, it added.
After long proceedings, nine accused, including Pintu, were sentenced to death while 25 to life imprisonment and 13 others to 10 years in prison on July 3, 2019.
He went into hiding soon after the sentence in the assassination attempt case was announced in 2019. He fled to India on the day following the judgment. After staying there for some days, he returned to the country and went into hiding in different parts of the country, including Dhaka, Rajshahi and Cox's Bazar.
He was last detained by RAB-2 while hiding at his friend's house in Teknaf of Cox's Bazar.
Another Russian employee of Rooppur nuke plant dies
Another Russian national who worked in Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project has died in Green City residential area in Ishwardi upazila of Pabna, police said on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Ivanov Anton, 33. He used to work as an employee of Rosem Company, a Russian contractor for the project.

With this, eight foreign employees of the nuke plant have died this year.
He used to live in room number 126 on the 12th floor of building No 2 in Green City residential area, a housing project for foreigners at Natun Hat in Sahapur of the upazila, said Arbinda Sarkar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ishwardi police station.
Ivanov fell unconscious in front of the elevator on the way back to his room after buying food from a restaurant near Green City Sunday night, he said.
Later, the physicians at Rooppur project declared him dead. The body was handed over to police.
“Ivanov might have died of a cardiac arrest,” the OC added.
8 foreign employees of Rooppur nuke plant die this year
With the latest one, six Russian employees, a Belarusian and a Kazak national have died at the Rooppur Nuke Plant site this year.
On April 15, Belarusian man Ivanu Maxim, 52, an employee of contractor firm Ruinwald of the under-construction project, was found dead at the Green City residential area.
Police suspected that Maxim died of cardiac arrest.
On March 26, Kazakhstan national Vladimir Soviet, an employee of contractor firm Nikim at Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, was killed at a house in Ishwardi Rooppur Residential Project Green city.

Three Belarus nationals- Urbanavichus Vitali, 44, Fedarovich Henadz, 42, and Matsveyeu Uladzimir, 43 - were detained from the area for their involvement in the killing. They work at Russian company Rossem.
A court in Pabna sent three Belarus citizens to jail on March 28, a day after Iurii Fedorov, director of the contracting firm, filed the case accusing them of committing the murder, said Raihan Pervez, sub-inspector of Ishwardi Police Station.
From January 28 to February 6, as many as five Russian employees of the nuke plant died, prompting the police to initiate a probe.
Life sentences awarded to trio in absentia for 2003 murder in Pabna
A Pabna court sentenced three people to life imprisonment for killing an ‘extremist’ leader named Abu Musa in 2003.
Judge Ahsan Tareq of Pabna Special District and Sessions Judge's Court passed the order on Monday.
The lifers are Mohammad Ali, 40, of Pabna Sadar upazila, Khokon, 42, of Ataikula and Jahangir Hossain, 45, of Santhia upazila. All the convicts have been absconding, sources said.
The court also fined Tk 25,000 and sentenced one more year non-payment imprisonment to each of them.

Twenty people were acquitted from the case as their involvement in the killing wasn't proved.
According to the case statement, on August 13, 2003, 10-12 miscreants stabbed Abu Musa Khan, a resident of Santhia upazila, in Hatbaria-Boailmari area leaving him seriously injured. Locals rescued him but he died on the way to the hospital.
Rahima Khatun, wife of the deceased, filed a murder case against 10-12 unidentified people at Santhia police station.
After an investigation, on September 9, 2004, the police submitted a charge sheet to the court accusing 23 people.
Worker dies falling off reactor at Rooppur Nuke Plant
A 32-year-old worker of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project in Pabna died after falling off the reactor of the plant on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Tushar Ahmed, son of Rafiqul Islam of Ishwardi upazila of the district.

Asaduzzaman Asad, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ishwardi Police Station, said Tushar accidently fell on the ground while working in the morning and sustained serious head injuries.
Later, he was rushed to Upazila Health Complex and then to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, said the OC.
None can defeat a united AL: Obaidul Quader
Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader said no political opponent of Bangladesh will be able to stop the victory of Awami League if the party is united.
He said this while joining the Pabna district Awami League triennial council this morning.
Calling upon the leaders and workers of all levels of the party to prepare for the forthcoming national elections, Obaidul Quader said that no one can defeat the Awami League unless they defeat themselves.
"So everyone must remain united," he added.
Mentioning the unity of Awami League as the main strength of Awami League,he said conspiracies are going on in the country and abroad against the development of Sheikh Hasina, Calling upon all to be vigilant, the general secretary of Awami Leaguesaid that everyone should be united against all conspiracies.

The general secretary of the Awami League warned the bad image holding people not to make the leader in any way, noting that the party would be weakened if the seasoal people are made leaders instead of the sacrificers.
Referring to the workers of bad times as the lifeblood of the party, Obaidul Quader said that the cuckoos of spring ( seasonal people) cannot be sheltered.

2 Russian employees of Rooppur nuke plant die
Two Russian employees of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant at Ishwardi upazila in Pabna died early Saturday.
The deceased are Schukin Pavel,48, mechanical engineer of sub-contractor company Trest Rossem, and Tolmasoff Vassiliev, 59, installer of another company SMU-1.
Both of them were residents of Green City Project, housing project for the Russian officials of the power plant
Police said Pavel fell sick around 3 am and was brought to Ishwardi upazila health Complex where a doctor announced him dead.

“We suspect he died from excessive alcohol intake,” said Asaduzzaman Officer-in-Charge of Ishwardi police station.
Meanwhile, Tolmasoff collapsed at 2 am while getting down from the stairs on the 14th floor of the building and died on the spot, said a doctor of the employer company.
OC Asaduzzaman said both the bodies will be sent to Russia through the embassy after autopsy.

3 sent to jail for killing UP chairman candidate in Pabna
A Pabna court has sent three people to jail in connection with the murder of an independent UP chairman candidate Yasin Alam of Bharara union of the district.
The arrested accused are UP chairman of Bharara union Abu Saeed Khan, 52, Nader Biswas, 53, of Bijayrampur village and Samo, 31, of Naldah village.
Pabna District and Sessions Judge Asaduzzaman passed the order on Tuesday noon.

Bail was rejected for all the three arrested accused and sent to jail. At this time 2 people – Alam, 33, and Shamsul Hossain, 40, were granted bail, said counsel Adv Abdus Samad Khan Ratan.
According to court sources, of the 34 accused, five including the current chairman Abu Saeed, surrendered to the court in the murder case. The rest of the accused in this case are absconding.
On December 11, while on election campaign Yasin Alam was injured when followers of Abu Saeed attacked. Yasin died on the way to the hospital.

Student among 3 killed in Pabna road accidents
Three people including a student were killed in separate road accidents in Pabna on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Rabiul Islam, 40, son of Tarun Biswas of Putigara village of Santhia upazila, Abdul Momin, 38, son of Kahay Hossain of the same village, Sajjad Hossain, 18, son of Asadul Islam of Srikrishnapur area of Dapunia.
A man was killed and two others were injured as a truck hit a paddy-laden van from behind at Madhpur Tailkupi on Pabna-Kashinathpur road around 8 am on Sunday.

Two injured people were taken to a hospital in critical condition and one of them died, Ataikula Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Jalal Uddin said.
Besides, a motorcycle collided with a three-wheeler coming from the opposite direction at Jot Adam intersection around 8 am, leaving Sajjad Hossian, who passed SSC exam this year, dead on the spot, said police.
