AL activist killed in post-poll violence in Pabna
An Awami League (AL) activist was killed in post-poll violence that broke out in the Nazirpur Hatpara area of Hemayetpur union in Pabna Sadar on Tuesday evening.
The deceased was identified as Shamim Hossain, 40, a supporter of defeated AL candidate in Hemayetpur and son of Nur Ali Pramanik of Nazirpur Hatpara.
According to locals, Manjurul Islam alias Madhu, the defeated chairman candidate who had the AL electoral symbol (boat), was having tea with his supporters at a tea stall where independent candidate Tariqul Islam Nilu Kha, along with his supporters including son Imran, arrived and started firing indiscriminately.
Shamim Hossain was shot dead on the spot.

Pabna Sadar Circle ASP Roknuzzaman said Shamim was taken to the hospital but the doctor on duty could only declare him dead.
Additional police have been deployed in the area in the wake of the attack.

Clash between BNP factions: Ex-Jubo Dal leader stabbed in Pabna
A former leader of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, BNP's youth wing, was stabbed in Pabna Monday during a clash between two factions of BNP.
The injured is Monir Ahmmed Monir, former organizational secretary of district unit of BNP. He is currently being treated at Pabna Medical College Hospital.

Additional Superintendent of district police Masud Alam said BNP was holding a rally in front of the district office of the party at Gopalpur-Lahiri area for its Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s treatment abroad from 2:10pm.

Around 5 pm a clash between faction of BNP leader Taslim Hossain Sweet and Monir Ahmmed started and it soon turned violent after Monir got stabbed, said ASP Masud Alam.
Later police with Detective Branch members took control of the situation, he said.
Another case lodged against Murad and Nahid in Pabna
Another case has been filed against former State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murad Hassan and Youtuber Muhammad Mohiuddin Helal Nahid in a Pabna court for derogatory comments about BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and his family members on social media.
Advocate Arshed Alam, president of the Pabna District Nationalist Lawyers Forum, filed the case before the Pabna Chief Judicial Magistrate cognizance court on Wednesday morning.

According to the case statement Murad made derogatory remarks on a social media interview on December 1 about Zia family.
Arshed said that all the members of the Pabna Nationalist Lawyers Forum were hurt and thus filed this defamation suit.

Murad was made the first accused and presented Helal Nahid the second in this case.
Arshed said, Murad made indedent remarks about Barrister Zaima Rahman. It's not just disgracing Zaima, this is disgraceful for all women.”
Woman hacked to death in Pabna; Youth held
A woman was stabbed to death and her husband injured in an attack by a youth at Munshidpur village in Ishwardi Upazila of Pabna district on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Sharmin Shila, 32, wife of Ranaur Rahman of the village.
Police arrested Sumon Ali, 30, son of Asgor Ali of Soraikandi village, from the spot.

Firoz Kabir, Additional Superintendent of Police of Ishwardi Circle said the couple used to live in a flat on the 3rd floor of the house.
On Tuesday morning, Sumon attacked the woman with a sharp weapon and chopped her indiscriminately, leaving her dead on the spot, he said.
He also hit Shila’s husband Ranaur when he came forward to save his wife.
Later, locals caught the attacker and informed police.

Police said they recovered the body and arrested the attacker from the spot. They also took the injured to a hospital.
The reason behind the attack was not clear, the Additional SP said. “The attacker might have killed the woman over previous enmity”.
2 killed in Pabna road crash
Two people were killed when a truck hit a van on Dashuria-Muladuli highway at Saraikandi in Ishwardi upaizla of Pabna district on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Selim Sardar, 40, son of Ashraf Sardar and Rakib Hasan, 35, son of Abdul Goni of the Upazila.

The accident occurred around 11:30 am when the truck hit the van from behind , leaving two people injured, said Asaduzzaman Asad, officer-in-charge of Ishwardi Police Station.

Later, they were taken to a local hospital where doctors declared them dead.
UP chairman candidate killed: EC postpones polls in Pabna
The Election Commission (EC) has postponed the election for the post of Chairman at Bharara Union Parishad (UP) of Pabna Sadar Upazila following the death of a chairman candidate in a clash.
Pabna District Senior Election Officer Mahbubur Rahman said that if a candidate is killed in pre-polls violence, there is a provision to postpone the polls for that post as per the rules of the EC.
Police said a clash ensued between the supporters of independent chairman candidate Sultan Mahmud Khan and Awami League candidate Abu Sayed Khan over pasting posters at Bhatara village on Saturday.

During the clash the rival groups exchanged gunfire, leaving Yasin and 12 others injured, said Masud Alam, additional superintendent of Pabna police.
Yasin succumbed to his injuries on the way to Rajshahi Medical College, he said.
Nine of the injured were admitted to Pabna General Hospital and six of them later shifted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Tajik engineer killed in Pabna accident
A Tajik engineer of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant was killed after a goods-laden vehicle hit him in Ishwardi Upazila of Pabna district on Friday noon, police said.
The deceased was identified as Barjahan, 35. He was an engineer of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Pabna’s Ishwardi Upazila.

Barjahan was a Tajik national working as an engineer of the Russian-owned Nikimoth Company.
According to police, Engineer Barjahan was seriously injured when a goods carrying vehicle hit him from behind while working inside the project.
Later he was rescued and taken to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex where on-duty doctors declared him dead.

Being informed, police recovered the body, said inspector of Ishwardi police station (investigation) Hadiul Islam.
Arrangements will be made to send the body of the engineer to his country after the autopsy.
An unnatural death case has been filed at Ishwardi police station in this regard, said the OC.
10 get life terms for killing youth in Pabna
A Pabna Court on Wednesday sentenced ten people to life term imprisonment for killing a 19-year-old youth in Pabna's Bhangura upazila in 2009.
The lifers, along with their age at the time of the crime, are: Pravash Chandra Das, 18, Shahin Hossain, 21, Shafiqul Islam, 21, Saddam Hossain, 20, Abdul Karim, 45, Prince, 20, Farid Ahmed, 22, Bilkis Begum, 40, Yusuf Ali, 22, and Dulal Hossain, 20. All are residents of Choubaria area of the upazila.

Pabna Special District and Sessions Judge Ahsan Tareq handed down the verdict.
According to the case, Md Faruk Hossain of the village, was called out by someone on the night of August 24, 2009. Later, he was found dead.

Following the incident, the victim's mother Anwara Begum filed a complaint accusing 18-20 people. Police submitted the charge-sheet accusing 10 people.
Pabna pre-poll violence: Man dies of injuries at Rajshahi hospital
A 45-year-old man who sustained injuries in pre-poll violence in Sujanagar upazila of Pabna district Monday night, died at Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital a day later.
The deceased was identified as Sabuj Hossain, son of Mahatab Uddin of Chalna village in the upazila.
Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the Sujanagar police station, said a clash broke out Monday night between the supporters of Awami League-backed Union Parishad chairman candidate Amin Uddin and his rival Omar Faruk in Bhaina.

Several people sustained injuries in the violence and some motorbikes were also vandalised, the OC said, adding that both sides submitted complaints in connection with the violence.
Of the injured, two men -- Sabuj, a supporter of Omar, and Anwar Hossain, a supporter of Amin -- were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital as their condition was said to be critical.
Sabuj succumbed to his injures around 9pm on Tuesday.
As the news of his death spread, Omar's supporters brought out a procession in the Chalna area, demanding a free and fair investigation into the violence and exemplary punishment to those responsible for the untimely demise of Sabuj.

15 hurt in Pabna pre-polls violence
At least 15 people were injured, including three with bullet, in separate clashes Manikhat and Hatkhali unions in Sujanagar upazila of Pabna district on Sunday night ahead of the union parishad elections.
Those who sustained bullet injuries were identified as Motaleb, 37, son of Milon Khan, Sagar, 35, son of Abdul Majid and Fazlu, 55, son of late Abdur Rahman Khan of Bonkola village.

A clash broke out between the supporters of Awami League-backed and independent candidates in Manikhat union around 8:30 pm.
Another clash broke out around 11:30 pm at Swagata Bazar in Hatkhali Union.
Awami League-backed candidate for the post of chairman of Manikhat UP Shafiul Islam said supporters of independent candidate Abbas Ali Mallik vandalized one of our election offices and set it on fire.
“When the news spread, the supporters of the AL brought out a procession towards the Bonkola bazar when the people of a rival candidate opened fire at us, leaving 10 of our activists injured,” he alleged.
The injured were sent to Pabna General Hospital. However, critically injured Motaleb was shifted to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital.
