Gazipur, Aug 31 (UNB) – In a special drive, police arrested 112 people, including 52 women, on charges of engaging in immoral activities from different residential hotels in Tongi here on Thursday night.
Kamal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Tongi Police Station, said a team of police raided a good number of hotels in the area overnight and arrested them.
Rajshahi, Aug 31 (UNB) – Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested five suspected members of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) along with arms and ammunition from Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj districts early Friday.
The arrestees were identified as Aminul Islam, 32, son of Jamal Uddin of Baruipara, Mosharaf Hossain Morsalin, 22, son of Makbul Hossain of Char Boalmari Adarsha village of Godagari upazila in Rajshahi, Ismail Hossain, 32, son of Golam Rabbani, Rafiqul Islam, 40, son of Rustom Ali, and Abdul Matin, 40, son of Ain Uddin of Paschim Kodalkati Madhyachar in Sadar upazila of Chapainawabganj.
Tipped off, a team of Rab-5 conducted separate drives in the two upazilas of the two districts in the early hours and arrested the five ‘members’ of JMB along with 200gm gunpowder, bomb-making substances, a foreign pistol, a magazine with four bullets and four jihadi books, said Major Ashraful Islam, deputy commanding officer of Rab-5.
Satkhira, Aug 31 (UNB) – In a drive from Thursday night to Friday morning, police arrested 96 people from different parts of the district on various charges.
They arrested 22 people from Sadar, eight each from Kalaroa and Tala upazilas, 11 from Kaliganj, 18 from Shyamnagar, 20 from Ashashuni, four from Debhata and five from Patkelghata upazilas, said Azam Khan, an inspector at the Special Branch of Satkhira Police.
He said 13 activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir were among the arrestees.
Police also recovered 582 pieces of Yaba pill during the drive, Azam added.
According to him, the arrestees are accused in cases like acts of sabotage and drug abuse.
Kushtia, Aug 31 (UNB) – A case was filed against three people, including a bus driver and its owner, in connection with the death of a baby girl in an accident in the district town on Thursday.
Harunur Rashid, father of the deceased, filed the case against bus driver Khokon, its owner Joynul and supervisor Yunus with Kushita Model Police Station on Thursday night, said its officer-in-charge (OC) Nasir Uddin.
On Thursday, Akifa, a one-year-old daughter of Haruur Rashid, who sustained injuries after she fell from her mother Rina Akter's lap when a bus of 'Ganj-e-raj Paribahan' hit the mother in the town on Tuesday, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 4:45 am.
They were taken to General Hospital from where Afifa was referred to the DMCH for better treatment where the baby girl died early Thursday, her father said.
The video footage of the incident went viral on the social networking site Facebook, sparking an uproar among locals.
Cox’s Bazar, Aug 31 (UNB) – An elderly man and his granddaughter, who went missing on Wednesday, were found dead in a fish enclosure along the Naf River in Teknaf upazila on Friday.
The deceased were identified as Yusuf Ali, 75, and his granddaughter Rozina Akter, 10, daughter of Abdul Malek of the upazila.
Spotting the floating bodies of Yusuf and Rozina at Hoaikhan Unsiprang Jhimongkhali along the river, local people informed police about it in the morning, said Pronoy Chakma, Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO).
Later, a special team of police from Huaikang police camp recovered the bodies with the help of border guards around 8:30 am.
Yusuf along with Rozina went to the area with their cattle and they remained missing since then, the UNO said.
It is not still clear how the tragic incident happened.
