Sylhet, Sept 3 (UNB) – A private university staff was killed in a road accident at Shamimabad in the city on Sunday night.
The deceased was identified as Rustom Ali, 36, an office assistant of Leading University.
Akhtar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Shahporan (R) police station, said the accident took place around 10pm as the microbus hit him in front of Sonargaon Community Centre while he was crossing the road, leaving him dead on the spot.
Savar, Sept 3 (UNB) – At least three people were killed and five others injured as a pick-up hit a truck on Dhaka-Aricha highway at Boliarpur here early Monday.
The deceased were identified as Engineer Zahurul Islam, 55, of Mir Akhter Group, pick-up driver Khalilur Rahman and Nurunnabi.
Ajgar Ali, a sub-inspector of Savar Model Police Station, said the accident took place when the Dhaka-bound pick-up from Sirajganj hit the truck from behind leaving the three passengers of the van dead on the spot and five others injured.
On information, police recovered the bodies.
Narsingdi, Sept 3 (UNB) – Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested six people along with 120 gold bars weighing 14kg from a bus on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Panchdona in Sadar upazila on Sunday.
A team of Rab-3 raided the bus around 5pm and arrested the six people along with the gold bars, said assistant superintendent of Police Abu Zafar, operation officer of Rab-3.
Details of the raid will be revealed at a press briefing soon, said the official.
Sylhet, Sept 3 (UNB) – Police arrested two people from the city on Sunday evening in a case filed over the murder of Awami League Kuwait unit leader SM Abdul Ahad.
Mosharaf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said they arrested two people for interrogation.
However, police did not disclose the names.
Earlier, victim’s wife Rasna Begum filed the murder case with Kotwali Police Station accusing 5/6 unnamed people.
SM Abdul Ahad, 40, son of Haji NurMiah of MunshibazarKarimpurMedeniMahal in Rajnagarupazila of Moulvibazar district and organising secretary of Kuwait unit of Awami League, who came to Sylhet from Moulvibazar on Thursday to attend a party programme, was hacked to death in the city on Friday morning.
Sherpur, Sept 3 (UNB) – Khitindra Chandra Boishya, a 64-year-old freedom fighter, has started swimming to cross 186 kms of the Bhogai River, aiming to set a new Guinness World Record.
Khitindra started the swimming jumping into the river from the west side of a bridge in Nalitabari upazila headquarters at 7am on Monday.
Arifur Rahman, Nalitabari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), inaugurated his swimming programme in presence of hundreds enthusiastic people.
The UNO said Khitindra will cross Kongso and Mogra rivers in Netrakona district and reach Dewan Bazar ghat in Madan upazila on September 5, swimming 60 hours without any break.
Madan Upazila Nagarik Committee and Nalitabari pourashava are providing necessary support to Khitindra to make his attempt a success.
Khitindra said female swimmer of Florida in the USA has a record of swimming 177kms.
Earlier, Khitindra crossed 146 kms swimming for 16 hours.
