The minister also said legal action will be taken against polluting factories that are operating without ETPs during a meeting with the National River Conservation Commission (NRCC) at the secretariat.
“A special initiative will be taken for waste management in municipalities, city corporations of the country including Dhaka. After the city corporations and municipalities designate the specific locations, the special project on waste management will be implemented,” Md Shahab Uddin stated.
Mentioning the dire situation of river pollution in Bangladesh, the minister said the Environment Ministry will take all the necessary measures to ensure the rivers are kept pollution-free so people can use the water without risking their health.
“The ministry will work to protect the rivers by utilizing the practical experience and advice of NRCC,” he added.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Chairman of NRCC presented a detailed video report on illegal occupation, pollution and navigability of the rivers of Bangladesh. He elaborated how the rivers across the country have been subjected to illegal occupation.
Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change Habibun Nahar MP, Chairman of NRCC Dr Muzibur Rahman Howlader, members of the commission Md Alauddin, Md Muniruzzaman, Fida Abdullah Khan, Ministry Secretary Ziaul Hasan NDC and senior officials were present at the meeting.
