2 members of Bangladesh women cricket team test positive for Covid-19
Two members of the Bangladesh women's cricket team have tested positive for Covid-19, Jalal Yunus, chief of the media department of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), confirmed UNB on Monday evening.
The women's team recently returned home from Zimbabwe after confirming their participation in the next 50-over World Cup, which will be Bangladesh’s maiden World Cup appearance as well.
He, however, did not disclose the names of the players. Both of them have been isolated under the supervision of the physicians.
“They were tested a few times after arriving in Dhaka,” Jalal told UNB. “Every time they returned negative before the latest test. Those who tested positive are isolated, they, along with the other members of the team, gave samples for another test on Monday.
Bangladesh team returned home after the qualifying event, which took place in Zimbabwe recently, was called off abruptly after the surge of the newest variant of Covid-19 Omicron.
Test Cricket: Mahmudullah finally says goodbye
A little hope was there that Mahmudullah Riyad would continue to play Test cricket despite announcing his retirement in an abrupt move in July this year, but the hope finally got dashed on Wednesday.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has issued an official statement of Mahmudullah ending his 12-year-long Test career.
Mahmudullah was upset when he was axed from the Test squad last year. His omission was mainly enforced by head coach of the Bangladesh team Russell Domingo.

“Leaving a format of which I’ve been a part of for such a long time is not easy. I had always thought of going on a high and I believe this is the right time to end my Test career,” Mahmudullah was quoted as saying in a statement provided by the BCB.
The 35-year old played his 50th and last Test against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club in July this year with Bangladesh recording a 220-run win. In his final innings, the right-hander made an unbeaten 150, his fifth hundred in Tests, and was adjudged the player of the match.
The all-rounder got his Test cap back in 2009 against West Indies. He scored a total of 2914 runs in Tests at an average of 33.49 and took 43 wickets with the five-wicket haul in his debut. He has also captained Bangladesh in six Test matches.

“I want to extend my gratitude to the BCB president for supporting me when I returned to the Test team. I thank my teammates and the support staff for always encouraging me and believing in my ability. It has been an absolute honour and privilege to play Test cricket for Bangladesh and I will cherish the many memories,” Mahmudullah added.
However, the right-handed off-spinning all-rounder will continue to play limited-over cricket at the international level.
Shakib, Sohan uncertain for SA clash
Bangladesh star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan Sohan are in a race against time to be fit for their next match in the T20 World Cup against South Africa on November 2.
Shakib sustained a hamstring injury in the match against the West Indies while Sohan is still suffering from a blow on his abdomen received ahead of the match against England. Sohan missed the game against WI already.
According to the media department of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Sohan will be assessed on November 1 to decide if he is fit to play on November 2.

Shakib will be assessed after the completed 48 hours of rest to see if he is fit to play the next match.
Bangladesh have lost all three matches they have played so far in the Super 12s stage, which has made their way to the semifinals impossible.

The injury concern over Shakib came as a fresh blow for the Tigers.
Mahmudullah, the T20 captain of Bangladesh, said they still have plenty to take from the T20 World Cup if they can register wins in the remaining matches.

“It can happen in warm-up matches,” Minhajul told the media on Wednesday while inaugurating a World Cup news-related website in Dhaka. “We experiment many things in warm-up matches. So this is not a big deal.”
According to Minhajul, the Bangladesh team will be able to prepare well before the World Cup takes the field.
“It’s a good luck that we are playing a few practice matches ahead of the World Cup. I believe that we can prepare ourselves well ahead of the main event starts. We also have another practice match on October 14, I hope we can do well,” Minhajul told the media.

In Round 1 of the World Cup, Bangladesh will face Scotland, Oman and Papua New Guinea. If the Tigers can win two matches, they will advance to the Super 12s of the World Cup and join the teams like India, Pakistan, New Zealand and Afghanistan.
I didn't ask for votes in BCB election: Nazmul
After becoming the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for the third consecutive term on Thursday, Nazmul Hassan said he didn’t ask for votes from anyone in last week’s election.
In category one, Nazmul had the possibility to get a maximum of 57 votes. Out of 57, he got 53 votes— the highest by anyone in the October 6 contest.

“I got the highest number of votes, but to be honest, I didn’t ask for votes from anyone. I wanted to see what the people think about me, and how far I can go without asking for the votes,” Nazmul said on Thursday in his first meeting with the media after taking on the role of president for the next four years.
Nazmul came to the BCB for the first time in 2012 when the Bangladesh government appointed him as the president after then-president AHM Mostafa Kamal stepped down and joined ICC.
“There are some voters I thought would not vote for me. But they actually voted for me. This is the first time when I got a real taste of election at BCB,” Nazmul added.
A total of 23 directors were elected in the election with seven winning unopposed. Two other directors-- Jalal Yunus and Ahmed Sajjadul Alam-- were nominated by the National Sports Council.

Former Bangladesh captain Khaled Mashud Pilot contested in the election but failed to win, but the other former captain Naimur Rahman Durjoy won the election from the Dhaka division.
Nazmul becomes BCB president for next four years
Nazmul Hassan will steer Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) as its president for a new four-year term as he was predictably chosen by all the newly-elected directors on Thursday.
He served as the president of the board in the last two terms as well.
After taking on the full-time role for the consecutive third time, Nazmul said his main goal in the new term is to complete the construction of the Sheikh Hasina International Stadium in Purbachal.

“The main thing we have to do in the term is to build the Sheikh Hasina Stadium. We need this stadium if we would like to host the World Cup. This stadium is something must for us to hold big events,” Nazmul said on Thursday in this first media interaction after the election.
“As a team, we are slightly good in ODIs only, but we have to work more to be a better team. We should target number five in the ODI ranking as a team. There are many big teams who we need to beat if we want to become the number five team,” Nazmul added.
Ahead of the BCB general election, Nazmul had said that his biggest failure was not being able to work on the regional cricket bodies.

BCB Election 2021: all set for Wednesday's polling
The election of the biggest sporting body in the country, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), is set to take place Wednesday at its premises adjoining the Sher e Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.

A total of 173 voters were supposed to vote in the election, but with seven posts already filled, 46 councillors will not be required to vote. So the electorate will consist of 127 councillors.
Seventy of them will be able to vote in-person at the polling centre set up inside the BCB’s Board Room , while the rest (57) will use postal or e-ballots.

But two other councillors, Khalid Hossain from Madaripur, and Syed Ashfaqul Islam Titu from Kishoreganj ,who declared they were running later decided to recall their candidacies past the deadline, and thus their names will remain on the ballot, according to the election commission.
Since both of them are from Dhaka Division, it is expected to lead to two more directors getting elected unopposed - Naimur Rahman Durjoy and Tanvir Ahmed Titu are expected to benefit.
However, the names of Khalid and Ashfaqul will still be on the ballot papers as they failed to recall their participation on time.
As in the board of directors, Ahmed Sajjadul Alam and Jalal Yunus are likely to be nominated as directors by the NSC.
