Grandmother arrested for torturing 7-year-old after video goes viral
Police arrested a woman from Borhanuddin upazila in Bhola for torturing her seven-year-old granddaughter on allegation of stealing a mobile phone.
Police made the arrest conducting a drive on Sunday after a video of the brutal torture went viral on social media, said Shahin Fakir, Officer-in-Charge of Borhanuddin police station.
The arrestee was identified as Asma Begum from Barapata village of Deula union in the upazila.
Victim Tanisha’s mother Monwara Begum filed a case with police in this regard and the accused was sent to jail after being produced before the court on Monday, said OC Shahin Fakir.

Police: Gunfire at mall; no one shot, but 3 hurt fleeing
Gunfire rang out during a fight at a northern Virginia mall on Saturday, and police said three people were hurt while fleeing though no one was shot.
Officers were called to Tysons Corner Center on Saturday afternoon for a report of shots fired at the prominent mall near the nation's capital, Fairfax County police said, but there was no active shooter situation. A fight had broken out and one man took out a gun and fired it, police said.
Officials didn’t announce any immediate arrests, but Police Chief Kevin Davis said at a news conference that he expected to be sharing information with the public soon about those involved.
“Know this: We will find, we will capture and we will hold accountable the persons involved in this melee, ” Davis said.
Some officers were already at the mall when reports of gunfire started coming in and other officers who were on the road were dispatched to the mall, Police Col. Brian Reilly said.

The officers rushing in as people fled the mall tried to determine whether anyone was injured and if there were any suspects or victims.
Three people were taken to local hospitals with injuries received while fleeing, but no one was injured from gunfire, Reilly said.
The shooting happened on a second-floor walkway and investigators have found evidence consistent with gunfire and shell casings, he said.
Officers cleared the mall to make sure no suspects were present and helped those who had sheltered in place, Reilly said. The mall remained closed for the remainder of the day and won't reopen until Sunday, according to police.
Detectives are reviewing video from hundreds of cameras inside the mall to determine what happened, Reilly said. It appears that two groups of at least three people each were engaged in a fight when the shots were fired, he said.
News images showed police near the mall, some in helmets and camouflage gear with weapons raised as a precaution. Some people could be seen hugging each other after exiting the mall.
Opposition MPs come down hard on EC, police
Opposition lawmakers in Parliament Monday harshly criticised the law enforcement agencies for their engagement in various irregularities and offenses.
They made the criticism while placing their cut motions over additional allocation of Tk 178 crore against the Public Security Division of the Home Ministry in the supplementary budget for 2021-22 fiscal.
BNP lawmaker Harunur Rashid said there are allegations against police regarding extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances and human rights violations. “These allegations are not untrue,” he said.
He said the institution that is named the Election Commission should be abolished. “Hand it over to the police. What is its necessity? There is no need for the Election Commission until Vision 2041 (remains unimplemented).”
Jatiya Party MP Shameem Haider Patwary said today it is essential to make police liable. If they had been made liable internally, the sanction would not come on them from outside the country, he said.

“We need to have a special commission for police today and formation of an all-party special committee on human rights in this parliament in this regard,” he said.
The special committee would investigate any allegation made by the people and submit reports and make the proper persons liable, said the JP lawmaker.
“A culture of no-liability and a culture of impunity have started prevailing in the country,” said Shameem.
BNP MP Rumeen Farhana said the people are still being harassed by police. “Police is no longer a force of the state rather it has turned into a complete political force …. Torture in police custody has become a regular matter,” she said.
Ganoforum lawmaker Mukabbir Khan said the trend of engagement of police members --from constable to high officers- in criminal activities has increased as those who commit offenses are not brought to justice properly and they are not getting proper punishment.
“The whole police department comes under question due to their offenses. The matters should be taken care of,” he said.
In reply to their criticism, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque on behalf of the Home Minister said the police are performing their duties very efficiently under the present government.
He said many police officers lose their jobs due to irregularities and many ones have faced trial and been punished for their excesses.
JP MP Rowshan Ara Mannan, BNP MP Md. Mosharof Hosen and Independent MP Rezaul Karim Bablu also placed their cut motions against the additional allocation for the Public Security Division.

At least 4 killed as train derails in southern German Alps
A train accident in the Alps in southern Germany on Friday left at least four people dead and many more injured, authorities said.
Police said the regional train headed for Munich appeared to have derailed shortly after noon in Burgrain — just outside the resort town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, from where it had set off. Three of the double-deck carriages overturned at least partly, and people were pulled out of the windows to safety.
Police said on Twitter that four people were killed. They put the number of injured at about 30, 15 of whom were seriously injured and taken to hospitals.
The cause of the derailment was still being investigated. About 140 people were on the train at the time, including numerous students heading home from school for the Whitsun holiday.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Bavaria’s governor, Markus Soeder, expressed shock and sorrow at the disaster.
“Everything is being done to help those who were injured, to whom we wish a speedy recovery,” Scholz said. “Our thoughts are with the relatives.”
Soeder said that students on the train had been looking forward to the holidays.
“Lots of respect and thanks to the rescue services for their swift help,” he tweeted.

The line between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Oberau, north of the accident site, was closed. The area is near the Austrian border.
Train travel is popular among commuters and tourists alike in Germany, which has a dense network of local and long-distance trains.
While accidents are rare compared to road travel, there have been several fatal rail incidents in recent years.
A train dispatcher was sentenced to 3½ years in prison over a 2016 crash that killed 12 people in Bad Aibling, about 80 kilometers northeast of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The dispatcher admitted playing a game on his phone shortly before two trains collided on a single-track line.
Earlier this year one man died after the driver of a commuter train south of Munich ran a stop signal, resulting in a collision with another train.
