Islamic Foundation employee strangled to death in Ctg, wife detained
An employee of Islamic Foundation Bangladesh was strangulated to death allegedly by her wife in Najirpara area of Chattogram city early Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Mannan, 55, model caretaker of Fatikchhari upazila unit of Islamic Foundation and a resident Buripukur par area under the upazila.

Nazim Uddin Majumdar, officer-in-charge of Panchlaish police station, said wife Khodeza Begum along with their children strangled Mannan to death over a family feud at their house in the Nazjipara area around 2am.
“We have detained his wife who preliminary confessed to the killing,”the OC said.

A case will be filed in connection with the murder, the police officer added.
Fire at Chattogram high-rise building doused
A fire that broke out at an under-construction multi-storey building at Dampara in Chattogram was doused on Sunday.
Md Abdul Malek, assistant director of Chattogram Fire Service and civil Defense, said the fire broke out at the top floor of an under-construction multi-storey building of Dampara Meridian Hospital beside Woman Association High School around 2:30 pm and spread soon.
On information, five firefighting units rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze around 5 pm.
Badsha, contractor of the under construction building said the fire broke out at the top floor of the building suddenly. Many workers were engaged in working during the fire.
However, no causality was reported till the filing of this report.
Drug peddler snatched from police custody in Ctg; woman shot dead
A woman has been shot dead allegedly by police during a clash between police and drug peddlers when the later snatched a drug case accused from the law enforcers in Chandgaon of Chattogram city.
The deceased was identified as Nazma Aktar, 30, sister of accused Md Hanif of ‘Hanif Bahini’.

Drug peddler Hanif was arrested with 5000 Yaba pills on Saturday evening and some of his associates snatched him from police after attacking the police outpost at the Kalurghat area, said Chandgaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mainul Hossain.
‘Hanif Bahini’ members clashed with police, forcing the law enforcers to open fire that left Nazma and five policemen wounded, he said.
“I have heard the news of the death of the woman who was injured in the clash. However, we did not find the body at Chattogram Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).”

Meanwhile, Panchlaish Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Sadekur Rahman said a woman with bullet injuries was brought to CMCH from Kalurghat area and then she was taken to a private hospital in the city where doctors declared her dead around 11pm.
The body was kept at CMCH morgue, he added.
Besides, preparations steps have been take to file a case over snatching the accused after attacking police, said OC Mainul.
6 govt officials sued over not paying money for land acquisition of Bangabandhu Tunnel
A case has been filed against six government officials, including a senior assistant commissioner of the Chattogram district administration, for dilly-dallying to pay money due for land acquisition under the Bangabandhu Tunnel Project.
The case was filed at the court of Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Dev, said the plaintiff’s lawyer Advocate Anamul Hoque.
Taking the allegations into cognisance, the court asked the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to submit a report before it after investigating.
The plaintiff is Md Hemayet Hossain, a resident of the port city’s Halishahar area.

On the other hand, the accused are the district administration’s Senior Assistant Commissioner (land acquisition department) and Executive Magistrate Ahsan Murad, land surveyor Mohammad Abdul Mumin, surveyors Mohammad Iman Hossain Gazi, Muktar Hossain, Abu Kawsar Sohel and their office attendant Belayet Hossain Bulu.
According to the case statement, the victim’s grandfather Omda Miah had two families. Of them, there were two each sons and daughters in the first family and four sons in the second family.
four sons of the second family obtained some lands from their grandfather as heirs but the first family’s members could not accept the matter.Meanwhile, the government took the land as acquisition for the Bangabandhu Tunnel through the Karnaphuli River in Chattogram.
Centering the matter, victim Hemayet, a member of the first family, filed a case with a civil court in Chattogram earlier. Subsequently both the groups moved the High Court that ordered to take the money equally.
Following the order, a deal was inked between them over sharing the money on March 13, 2016.
Dodging the first family’s members, the members of the second family kept the money of the land acquisition under the custody of the prime accused.

The victim and others submitted a written complaint seeking money to the executive magistrate Ahsan Murad but they received no response in this regard for a long time.
November 10 this year, the victim along with one Md Fakhrul Islam went to the magistrate’s office and wanted to know about the update of their complaint.At one stage of the altercation, all the accused allegedly harassed the duo physically and abused them verbally.
E-gates to be introduced at Chattogram airport
After opening of E-gates at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, six electronic gates will be introduced at Chattogram Shah Amanat International Airport.
The E-gates will be inaugurated on Tuesday (November 15, 2022) to make the immigration process faster and improve the quality of services, said Wing Commander Taslim Ahmed, director of the airport on Monday.
The E-gates will be managed by immigration police and camera will be installed in each gate.

Passengers can easily pass through the E-gates as the gates will be opened automatically after submitting e-passport and the whole process will be completed within 30 seconds, said airport authorities.
Earlier on June 7, twelve E-gates were inaugurated at Dhaka Airport.
E-passports have an in-built microprocessor chip containing details of the holder. The e-gates of Chattogram's Shah Amanat International Airport will identify air passengers after scanning the e-passport. And the process ensures high security during the verification of travel documents, said authorities.

2 dead as picnic bus hits tree in Ctg
Two people were killed as a picnic bus crashed into a roadside tree on Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway in Lohagara upazila of Chattogram early Friday.
The deceased were identified as Avijit, 34, and Shakhawat Siddique, 35.

The accident occurred around 3am when the Cox's Bazar-bound picnic bus from the EPZ area of Chattogram hit a roadside tree on the highway, Sumon Rahman, sub-inspector (SI) of Dohazari Highway Police Station.
The two passengers were crushed under wheels of the bus after falling off the vehicle following the crash, he added.

They were rushed to Upazila Sadar Hospital where doctors declared them dead on arrival.
Police seized the bus, said the SI.
Freight operation from Ctg suspended as lighter vessel workers on strike
Lighter vessel workers in Chattogram launched an indefinite strike from 6 am Friday refraining from transferring goods from moored ships to press home their five-point demands.
Transportation of goods from Chittagong port to other parts of the country remained suspended too due to the strike.
On Thursday the lighter vessel workers announced the work stoppage during a rally under the banner of ‘vessel workers of all levels,’ at the city's Banglabazar area.
Removal of Chattogram Port chairman, removal of Officer-in-Charge of Patenga police station, cancelling lease of Charpara terminal used for movement of lighter vessel workers, creating a safe harbour for lighter vessels by excavating the Sangu River estuary, are among their five-point demands.

On November 3, men of some leaseholders of Charpara terminal had beaten up some nine workers and the police didn’t take any action against it, said Jashim Uddin, acting general secretary of Lighter Vessel Workers Union.
Protesting the incident, workers moved all the lighter vessels to Parkir Char and started using the Chinese Ghat to get on and off the vessels but the authorities evicted that terminal too, he said.
Until the demands are fulfilled freight operation from Chattogram through rivers will remain suspended, he said.

10 shops, bank branch gutted in Ctg market fire
At least 10 business establishments including a branch of a private bank were gutted in a fire at a market in Anwara upazila of Chattogram early Monday.
Locals said the fire broke out at a shop in Amin Market near Chatri Choumohuni kitchen market around 12:30 am and it soon engulfed the adjoining shops.

On information, five fire tenders were pressed into service and it took them nearly an hour to douse the flames, said Md Abdullah, deputy assistant director of Agrabad fire service.
At least 15 business establishments, including the local branch of Arab Bangladesh (AB) Bank and a restaurant called Bhojan Bari, were gutted in the fire, said locals.

However, the exact amount of losses and source of the fire could not be ascertained immediately, said the officer.
Woman found dead in Chattogram water tank
The body of a 21-year-old woman was recovered from a water tank of a house at Bandartila in Chattogram city on Saturday night.
The deceased was identified as Marjina Akter, daughter of Wahidul Gazi of Bauphal upazila in Patuakhali district.
Abdul Karim, officer-in-charge of Export Processing Zone (EPZ) Police Station, said Marjina along with her husband Md. Hasan and seven-month-old baby used to live on the 4th floor of a building.

Marjina remained missing since Thursday afternoon. Getting no whereabouts, Hasan lodged a general diary with EPZ Police Station on Friday.
On Saturday night, the residents of the building complained to the house owner about bad odor from the water tank of the building.
On information, police went to the spot and recovered the decomposed body of Marjina.
Police suspected that Hasan might have killed his wife and dumped the body into the water tank.
Hasan went into hiding after the recovery of her body.
Himadri murder in Ctg: HC upholds death sentences of 3, acquits 2
The High Court (HC) on Thursday upheld the death sentence of three convicts in a case over the killing student Himadri Majumdar Himu in Chattogram in 2012.
The death-row convicts are- Mahbub Ali Dany, Zahidul Islam Shaon and Zunayed Riyad.
The court also acquitted Shah Selim alias Tipu and Shahadat Hossain Saju.

The HC bench of Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman delivered the judgment after hearing of the on the death references and the convicts’ petitions.
On 27 April in 2012, Himadri, an A-level student of Summerfield School and College of Chattogram, was forcibly taken to the rooftop of Tipu’s residential building and pushed off from the roof unleashing dogs on him.
Himadri died on May 23 of the year after undergoing treatment for 26 days.

Later, a case was filed at the Panchlaish police station. On October 30 of the same year, police submitted a chargesheet to the court against the five convicts.
On August 14 in 2016, Chattogram fourth additional metropolitan sessions judge Nurul Islam sentenced the five accused to death for their involvement in the murder.
Later, the documents of the death sentences were sent to the High Court for approval as per rules. Besides, the convicts appealed challenging the trial court judgment.
