2 killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’
Two suspected yaba traders were killed in a reported gunfight with police in Jhimangkhali Chingri Project area of Teknaf upazila early Monday.
The deceased were identified as Mahmud Ullah, 26, and Mohammad Mizan, 24.
Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Model Police Station, said they arrested Mahmud along with 5,000 yaba pills after raiding a microbus on Sunday morning.
Police took him with them during a raid in the area around 1am based on information given by him, the OC said.
“But as soon as police reached the area, a gang of yaba traders opened fire and tried to snatch Mahmud,” he said. “Mahmud and Mizan sustained gunshot wounds during the skirmish.”
They were taken to Teknaf upazila hospital where doctors pronounced them dead, the police officer said.
Police said they recovered 10,000 yaba pills, two LGs and bullet shells from the spot.
Last year, rights group Odhikar recorded 376 gunfight or cross fire deaths. Of them, police were responsible for 193.
2 ‘criminals’ killed in Naogaon ‘gunfight’
Two suspected criminals were killed in separate ‘gunfights’ with police in Atrai and Patnitala upazilas of the district early Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Minhajul Islam alias Mintu alias Shikdar, 40, and Zahidul Islam, 38.
Moselm Uddin, officer-in-charge of Atrai Police Station, said they arrested Minhajul, son of Abdur Rahman of Bhartetulia village, from his residence as he was wanted in 10 cases including that of murder on Wednesday night.
Later, police took him with them to recover firearms at Tilabaduri village at night.
“As soon as police reached the spot, Minhajul’s cohorts opened fire. Minhajul was killed during the skirmish,” the OC said.
Police said they recovered a foreign pistol, four bullets and four bombs from the spot.
In a separate incident, Zahidul, son of Rafatullah of Balugha village in Patnitala upazila was killed in another reported gunfight with police.
Parimal Kumar Chakrabarty, officer-in-charge of Patnitala Police Station, said the man was wanted in 12 criminal cases.
He was arrested from Balugha village on Wednesday night and after interrogation, police took him to Bakrail village to recover drugs.
When police reached the spot, Zahidul’s associates opened fire. “He was killed in the ensuing gunfight,” the OC said.
A shutter gun, two bullets, 985 Yaba pills and four sharp weapons were recovered from the spot.
Last year, 376 people were killed in so-called crossfires in Bangladesh, according to Odhikar, a human rights organisation. Of them, 193 died in ‘crossfires’ with police.
In 2018, Bangladesh saw 458 extrajudicial killings.

7 ‘Rohingya robbers’ killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’
Seven suspected members of a Rohingya robber gang were killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on a hill in Teknaf upazila here early Monday.
The identities of the deceased could not be known yet.
Tipped off that a gang of robbers of ‘Jokey Group’ was taking preparation to commit robbery in Jadimora-Mochni area of the hill behind Rohingya camp No 27, a team of Rab conducted a drive there around 4:30am, said Mirza Shahed Mahtab, company commander of Rab-15.
Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the robbers opened fire on them prompting them to fire back in self-defence that triggered the gunfight, Mahtab said.
After two and a half hours of the gunfight, the elite force members recovered seven bodies from the spot.
They also recovered two firearms from the spot.
