He made the call while addressing a discussion meeting at the Supreme Court Judges' Complex marking the ‘Supreme Court Day’.
“Today I’m the President of the country. But when the term will expire, I’ll become a common man. I’ve become the President for people’s welfare. When we reach a position, a tendency of show-off develops. But power is meant for people’s welfare,” the President said.
All the government and private departments are run by public money, he said. “So, holding power is not for showing off, it’s for doing people’s betterment. It’ll be possible to build ‘Sonar Bangla’ when one will keep it in mind.”
Abdul Hamid also lamented the diminishing dominance of lawyers in politics and emerging influence of businessmen. “I’m upset at one point. I used to see lawyers playing the leading role everywhere. In the election of 1970, 51 percent were lawyers. Now, the situation has changed and reached a frustrating level. The rate is frustratingly low. Most of those who are there are in fact non-practising ones,” he said.
He also said if businessmen take control of everything, the environment will not be a good one. “We should think why this is happening. Is this happening because of our behaviour? Are we not going to people? We have to think about it now,” said the President.
