“BNP burned people to death in the name of an anti-government movement. As leaders, neither Begum Zia (Khaleda Zia) nor Fakhrul Islam Alamgir can shirk the responsibility for it. These were not accidents but incidents. Such comment over the fire incident doesn’t suit those who burn people to death,” he said.
The minister was talking to reporters after inaugurating the biennial conference of Abhinay Shilpi Sangha at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
BNP on Thursday blamed the government’s mismanagement and irresponsibility for the loss of 67 lives in the Chawkbazar chemical warehouse fire. “The government has failed to deliver on all fronts. It’s utterly exposing its failure in protecting people’s lives. We’re seeing people are losing lives everywhere due to the government’s mismanagement and lack of responsibility,” BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir had said.
Replying to a query, Hasan Mahmud, also Awami League publication and publicity affairs secretary, said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina spent sleepless night after the Chawkbazar fire and gave necessary directives. “The government remains alert. The opposition should stand by the government to face the such situation.”
About the Jatiya Oikyafront’s public hearing over the 11th parliamentary elections, he said the country is now reeling from the shock and they should have stood by the people instead of staging a drama in the name of public hearing.
