“We urge the government to promote us so that there’s a balance between us and diploma midwives,” said Jebunnahar Akter, president of Bangladesh Family Welfare Visitors Association, at a press conference at Jatiya Press club.
She urged the government to launch training programme for FWVs to develop their skills.
”We’re playing an important role in reducing infant mortality,” she said.
Jebunnahar also sought punishment of corrupt officials involved in the process of recruitment, promotion and posting in the sector.
"They’re tarnishing the image of the sector," she said.
The association Secretary General Noor Jahan Begum, its Organising Secretary Mahbuba, members Rajia Khatun and Rokhsana Goni and others were present at the event.
There are more than 5,500 FWV in the country. Around 95 percent are working in union's health and family welfare centres in rural areas.
