The High Court on Wednesday issued a rule seeking explanation as to why the import of beef from abroad despite adequate production in the country should not be declared illegal.
The bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader issued the rule after hearing a writ petition filed by Md Mosabbir Hossain last week.
Advocate Md Qamruzzaman and Nazmul Huda stood for the writ petitioner and Assistant Attorney general Md Saiful Alam moved for the state.
The HC also questioned why there shouldn’t be a directive to ensure the ‘standard’ and ‘purity’ of beef, the culinary name for meat from cattle.
According to the Department of Livestock Services (DLS), the country’s annual demand for beef at 72.94 lakh metric tonnes is outstripped by supply, which stands at 75.14 lakh metric tonnes, said Advocate Qamruzzaman.
