"We’ve noticed a very low attendance in the ongoing movement during the daytime. But the number marks a significant rise in any programme like torch procession at night. We’re sure that they are not campus students but Shibir workers,” he said.
The JU proctor was addressing a press conference held at the university's new administrative building.
He said two Shibir suspects - Saad Sharif and Nurul Amin - were arrested from the Chowrangi area of the university on Tuesday and handed over to police.
Saad Sharif is a top Shibir leader, Firoz claimed, adding that police gleaned a lot of information and audio clips from his mobile phone.
He added that there was evidence of Saad Sharif's involvement in various programmes of agitators at the university. He is also reported to have been involved in a conspiracy to destabilise educational institutions in various parts of the country.
JU Registrar Rahima Kaniz said the movement over the university's infrastructural development projects is not only destabilising the university but also the country.
The protestors staged a rally on Tuesday evening demanding the resignation of VC Prof Farzana Islam.
About the Shibir's involvement with the ongoing movement, Prof Jamal Uddin (Runu) said, "Jamaat-Shibir has no connection with the protesters. A former university student was arrested while wearing a helmet. And they were not with us.”
Prof Md Nurul Islam said Jamaat-Shibir has no association with the agitators. “It’s a tactic to divert the movement to a different direction.”
