In a statement, party general secretary Reza Kibria said, “A new burden has been imposed on people by raising the gas tariff due to the government’s corruption, incapability and failure to run the country.”
He feared that the gas price hike will push up the fare of public transport and the cost of production in industries.
By increasing the gas tariff, the Gonoforum leader alleged, the government has once again demonstrated that it is not running the country in the interest of people.
“It’s no longer incomprehensible to people that the current unrepresentative government ignores public sufferings,” he observed.
On Sunday, Chairman of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) Monwar Islam said the average gas price has been raised by 32.8 percent for the retail consumers in the country with effect from Monday (July 1).
As per the new price hike, the household consumers having single burner will have to pay Tk 925 a month instead of the existing Tk 750 while the double burner users will have to pay Tk 975 instead of the existing Tk 800.
