In a message posted Sunday on the website of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic to mark the International Women's Day, the president remembers "how much has been done in these 45 years of democracy, but also how much remains to be done, to ensure equal opportunities and treatment for women" in Portugal.
"In Portugal, we still experience unacceptable discrimination against women," he said, referring to the widespread domestic violence in the country.
Also in the day, Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Cost and general secretary of ruling party Socialist Party (PS) said that the battle for equality is long-lasting and never-ending.
"The battle for equality is a permanent battle. It is a battle that is never definitively won, because there are always barriers that remain, there are always factors of discrimination that persist and, above all, there are new factors of inequality that are emerging," Costa said, quoted by Lusa News Agency.
"The battle for equality is a battle that has to continue because only with equality is there true freedom," he added.
