The accused is identified as Saidur Rahman, son of late Korban Molla of Dighi Saguna village of the upazila. He is currently employed in Jaipurhat Police Lines.
On Tuesday, his wife Ambiya Khatun filed a case with Sirajganj’s cognizance court accusing five people including her husband.
Later, another case was filed with Women and Child Repression Special Tribunal-2.
According to the case statement, Ambiya was married off to Saidur in 1997. Their troubles started not long after, as Saidur pressurized his wife to bring dowry from her parents. At one stage, her parents provided TK 180,000 (1.8 lakh).
In 2016, even after being married for nearly 20 years, Saidur again demanded TK 5 lakh more from his wife when he got promotion as inspector. He tortured her physically and mentally as she refused to do so.
Meanwhile, the police officer got married to a girl named Farhana Khatun Iti, hailing from Shibpur village of Rajshahi’s Puthia upazila.
From then, he used to torture Ambiya and his only daughter with her on various pretexts.
Eventually, unable to bear his torture anymore, Ambiya left their marital home and returned to her parents, taking their daughter with her.
She filed the cases alleging dowry-related torture on Tuesday, after attempts at mediation to solve the couple’s problems broke down.
