However the handover only came after the case filed against the son in this connection was withdrawn and the families had agreed to reach a mutual settlement.
Hence the mother’s act may not represent the height of moral fortitude it would have otherwise.
The alleged stalker Kawsar Alam Avi, son of Mahfuzul Alam, president of ruling party Awami League’s youth front Juba League’s Bogura city unit, had been stalking the stabbing victim for a long time.
In-charge of Sadar police outpost Inspector Sheikh Farid said suspect Avi’s mother Nasrin Alam, accompanied her son to Sadar Police Station on Sunday night and handed him over to the police.
Locals said Avi use to stalk the victim, a first year student of Government Mujibur Rahman Mohila College, usually on her on her way to college and deliver love proposals that the victim would always refuse.
Avi became more agitated than usual during one such instance on Thursday, and reacted by forcibly taking her to a house in Katnarpara area where he beat her up and knifed her.
Avi later released the girl after threatening her.
Locals took the girl to a local clinic, from where she was shifted to Shahid Ziaur Rahman Medical College.
On Saturday, victim’s father filed a case with Sadar Police Station accusing four people including Avi.
Subsequently though the victim’s family decided to withdraw the case and settle the matter as Avi belongs to the politically and socially influential family.
