57 arrested in DMP anti-narcotics drive
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in separate drives arrested 57 people on charges of selling and consuming drugs in the capital in 24 hours till 6 am on Wednesday.
During the drives, 45,743 contraband yaba pills, 559 grams of heroin, 98.675 grams of hemp and 78 bottles of contraband Phensidyle were recovered from the possessions of the arrestees.
As part of the DMP’s regular anti-drug drives, Detective Branch (DB) and teams from local police stations launched drives in various areas in the capital from 6 am Tuesday to 6 am on Wednesday and recovered the drugs.

A total of 40 cases were registered with local police stations against the arrestees under the Narcotics Control Act.
50 held in anti-drugs drives across Dhaka
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Wednesday claimed to have arrested 50 people on charges of selling and consuming banned drugs.
Sources at the DMP headquarters said Detective Branch sleuths and local police conducted drives across the city in the past 24 hours and arrested them.
Around 4,766 pieces of yaba, 44.320kg cannabis, 150g heroin, 72 bottles of foreign liquor, and 20 bottles of Phensedyl, a codeine-based cough syrup that fetches a high price in the narcotics market of Bangladesh, were recovered from the possession of the accused, the sources told UNB.

Thirty-one cases were registered at local police stations against them under the Narcotics Control Act.
60 arrested in DMP’s anti-narcotics drive
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in separate drives arrested 60 people on charges of selling and consuming drugs in the capital in 24 hours till 6 am on Thursday.
During the drives, 4,955 contraband yaba pills, 580 grams of heroin, 75 bottles of contraband Phensidyle and 56.415 kg of cannabis were recovered from the possessions of the arrestees.

As part of the DMP’s regular anti-drug drive, Detective Branch (DB) and local police stations raided on various areas in the capital from Wednesday 6 am to 6 am on Thursday and recovered the drugs.
A total of 45 cases were registered with local police stations against the arrested people under the Narcotics Control Act.
After 5 clueless weeks, DB cracks case of CNG driver's murder
Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) believe they have cracked a hitherto clueless murder in the city's Dakkhin Khan, arresting six gangsters from Dhaka and Moulvibazar.
The arrestees were identified as Md. Khaled Khan Shubo, Md. Tipu, Md. Hasanul Islam alias Hasan, Md. Jahangir Hossain, Abdul Majid and Md. Sumon.
The detectives also recovered a Swiss gear, an autorickshaw used by the victim and a mobile phone from their custody.
Based on secret information, the Airport Zonal team of DB (Uttara division) carried out simultaneous drives in a number of places in Dhaka city and Rajanagar thana areas of Moulvibazar district on Friday and early Saturday and arrested the six gangsters.
Briefing reporters at DMP's media center on Saturday, Additional Commissioner (Detective) of DMP Mohammad Haroon-ur-Rasheed said at around 9pm on December 7 last year, victim Md. Mustafa came out from his Dakkhin Khan residence to drive his battery-powered autorickshaw. As he did not return at night, his mother registered a general diary with Dakkhin Khan police station.
Later on December 17 at around 1.45 am, the victim's mother came to know through a local that an unidentified dead body was found on a vacant plot in Asian City under Dakkhin Khan police station. The victim's mother and father quickly went to the spot and identified their son Mustafa. In this incident, the victim's mother then filed a murder case at Dakkhin khan police station.
The DB chief said that the airport zonal team of DB (Uttara Division) started a shadow investigation of the case. During the investigation, the accused involved in the incident of the case were identified using information technology. After that raids were conducted in Rajnagar Thana area of Moulvibazar district along with various areas of the capital and arrests were made.
People remain indoors as fireworks light the sky to usher in New Year
With countdown and fireworks, revellers in major cities across the country, including Dhaka and Chattogram, ushered in the first new year without Covid restrictions since the pandemic began in 2020.
Cox's Bazar, one of the major tourist spots in Bangladesh, welcomed the new year with characteristic fervour, with thousands of tourists gathering at the beach resort town to welcome 2023 on the Gregorian calendar.
Most hotels, motels, resorts, and guest houses were pre-booked by tourists.
Despite tight security, tourists and locals enjoyed the last sunset of 2022 on the beach and bid farewell to 2022.
Masud Chowdhury and Samantha Rahman, a tourist couple from Narayanganj, said: "We welcome 2023 with a trip to Cox's Bazar to let go of disappointment, sadness, and pain."
Abul Kashem Sikder, general secretary of the Cox's Bazar Hotel Motel Guest House Owners' Association, said some 90 percent of rooms had already been reserved for the "31st night" (new year's eve) celebration this year.

No outdoor celebrations on 31st night: DMP Commissioner
No open air events, fireworks and crackers will be allowed on the eve of New Year, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruque on Saturday.
“No one will be allowed to hold outdoor programmes, use of crackers, fireworks or sky lanterns (fanush) will also remain prohibited on 31st night,” he said.
The DMP boss came up with the information at a press briefing held at the DMP media centre in the city.
Adequate police including plainclothes ones will be deployed to ensure security on the 31st night and check-posts will be set up in different parts of the city and people will have to undergo police checking so that no militants can carry out sabotage activities centering the night, he said.
The Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) team of DMP, dog squad and bomb disposal units will kept ready to tackle any situation, said Faruque.
No DJ parties will be allowed and bars will remain closed from Saturday till 6 pm on Sunday, he said.
No one will be allowed to carry firearms at residential hotels till 10 am on Sunday, he added.

Besides, the entry of outsiders will remain restricted from 8 pm in Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara areas today but the Amtoli crossing and Kakoli crossing will be opened for allowing entry of residents of those areas, said the DMP commissioner.
Meanwhile, no outsiders will be allowed in Dhaka University area after 6 pm and no vehicles will be allowed there during this period. People can enter the university area through Nilkjhet and Shahbagh areas after showing their identity cards.
Firefighting units and ambulances will be keep ready in different important points of the city and no vehicles will be allowed in Hatirjheel area after sun set.

When asked about any possible militant threat, the DMP commissioner said there is no specific threat centering the 31st night.
DMP clearance for BNP to hold mass procession on December 30
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Tuesday cleared the BNP to hold their mass procession in Dhaka on December 30.
Though no specific condition was imposed upon the party, DMP Commissioner Khandaker Golam Faruq asked the BNP to hold it in a peaceful manner.
BNP Vice Chairman Prof AZM Zahid Hossain and International Affairs Secretary Advocate Masud Ahmed Kamal on Tuesday evening went to the office of the DMP commissioner and held a meeting for around one hour.
Later, Commissioner Faruq said, “BNP leaders came to take permission to hold the procession, permission was given in the context of their appeal.”

He further said that the BNP leaders were asked to hold the procession peacefully and not to create anarchy. Besides, roads were fixed for the mass procession.
After emerging from the DMP commissioner’s office, BNP leader Zahid said they held a meeting with the DMP commissioner and other higher officials to hold the mass procession aimed at realising their 10-point demand including dissolution of parliament.
Putting several aspects of the meeting, he said their prescheduled procession will begin from Nayapaltan followed by the Jummah prayer.
He also said that the police administration assured them of providing all kinds of cooperation to hold it.

Metro Rail: DMP to provide security till specialised unit is formed
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) will provide security for the long-awaited launch of the Metro rail service in capital Dhaka, which is all set to open to traffic formally.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the first phase of the Metro – spanning Uttara (Diabari) to Agargaon, on December 28.
Though it has been decided that a specialised new police unit named “Mass Rapid Transit Police" or “MRT Police” will be formed to ensure security and safety checks at every station of the metro rail, the DMP will do the job in the interim.
The process to form the MRT police unit is running late for some procedures, including the final approval of the Secretaries' Committee under the Cabinet Division.

Contacted, additional DIG (O&M) of Police Headquarters (PHQ), SM Mostak Ahmed told UNB that the draft proposal for formation of the specialised MRT police unit is now at the Cabinet Division for the Secretaries’ Committee's final approval. The draft proposal was scheduled to be discussed Monday at the Secretaries’ Committee.
“The process of forming the MRT Police will start after getting the approval from the committee,” Mostak added.
42 held in city in anti-narcotics drive
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 42 people during its ongoing anti-narcotics drive in the capital in 24 hours till 6am on Thursday.
Detective Branch (DB) of police and different police stations under the DMP carried out separate drives starting from 6am on Wednesday.

During the drives, police recovered 798 Yaba pills 52 small packets containing 29 grams of heroin, 7.5 kg of hemp, 46 bottles of Phensidyl syrup and liquor from their possession, said a press release of DMP media centre.
A total of 35 cases were filed with police stations concerned under the Narcotics Control Act, it said.

Fardin didn’t commit suicide, he was murdered, claims father
Fardin Noor Parash did not kill himself, he was murdered, claimed his father on Kazi Nuruddin.
“After the planned murder, now the drama of suicide is being staged,” he told reporters at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) media center on Minto Road of the capital.
Expressing dissatisfaction over the investigation, Nuruddin said, “I will file no-confidence petition.”
“My son had the capability of coping with all kinds of situation. My son can't commit suicide.”

Showing two photographs of Fardin's body, Kazi Nuruddin said, “I saw Fardin's body, there were injury marks on his head.”
Various false information have been spread since the beginning to divert this planned murder, he claimed.
Expressing anger at the Buet administration, Fardin's father questioned whether the Buet VC and administration knew that Fardin had committed suicide. “They did not even console my family.”
“This would not have happened if my son had not been admitted to Buet,” he said.
Meanwhile, 40 students of Buet came to the DB office today (Thursday) to see the progress of DB's investigation.
After talking with the investigating officers for about three hours, the students said they are satisfied with the DB's investigation, said DB chief Harun Or Rashid.
On Wednesday, Additional Commissioner (Detective Branch) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Mohammad Harunur Rashid claimed that Fardin died by suicide after scrutinizing the footages regarding Fardin’s movement before his death.

Then he went to Sultana Kamal Bridge around 2:34 am on November 4. He was alone on the bridge till 2:37am, he said.
“He didn’t know swimming and we believe that Fardin committed suicide by jumping off Sultana Kamal Bridge,” he said.
Fardin was a 3rd year student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology’s civil engineering department and a resident of Qutubpur area in Narayanganj's Fatullah.
Police recovered Fardin’s body from the Shitalakhkhya River, behind a cotton mill at Siddhirganj, on November 7, three days after he went missing.
Sheikh Farhad, a physician at Narayanganj General Hospital where the autopsy was done, said there were several injury marks on Fardin’s head and body.
Kazi Nuruddin Rana, Fardin’s father, filed a case in connection with his son’s killing with Rampura Police Station on the same day and the case was later transferred to Detective Branch (DB) Police.
