Brace for monsoon showers!
Monsoon showers are likely to drench parts of the country in the next 24 hours, the weather department has said.
“Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at many places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions; at a few places over Dhaka and Chattogram divisions and at one or two places over Khulna and Barishal divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over the northern part of the country,” the Met office said in its bulletin.

Day and night temperatures may remain nearly unchanged over the country. A mild heat wave is sweeping over the districts of Satkhira, Jashore and Pabna and it may continue, as per the bulletin.
The maximum rainfall was recorded in Rangpur district at 62 mm, while the maximum temperature was recorded at 36.4 degrees in Jashore district in the last 24 hours till 9am, according to the weather department.
The trough of low extended from Bihar to Gangetic West Bengal persists. Monsoon is fairly active over Bangladesh and weak to moderate over North Bay, as per the forecast

The mercury reached 36.2 degrees Celsius – the highest – in Jashore, while the minimum temperature was 22.5 degrees in Srimangal.

The weather department recorded 98mm rainfall – the highest – in Rajarhat in the last 24 hours till 6pm Monday.
Day temperature may rise slightly over southern Bangladesh, and it may remain nearly unchanged elsewhere in the country.
Night temperature may remain nearly unchanged, the BMD said.

“Rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at many places over Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal divisions and at a few places over Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions," the Bangladesh Meteorology Department said on Friday.

Besides, moderately heavy to heavy rains are likely at places over the country. Day and night temperatures may remain nearly unchanged over the country, as per the Met office bulletin.
In an extended outlook for the next 72 hours, the BMD said the southwest monsoon winds may advance further.
The maximum rainfall in the last 24 hours till 6 am on Friday was recorded at 67 mm in Sylhet.

37 dead in heavy rains in Brazil
At least 37 people were killed and about 5,000 others displaced in northeastern Brazil due to heavy rains, authorities said Saturday.
Recife City, the capital of northeastern Pernambuco State, is the most affected by the rains, where 35 people died and about 1,000 others fled their home, according to the local Civil Defense.
In Alagoas State, two people were killed in the rains, with more than 4,000 residents evacuated.

Meanwhile, secondary disasters triggered by the heavy rainfall also caused casualties. On Saturday, 20 people were killed in a landslide in Recife, while six others died in another landslide in the nearby city of Camaragibe.
According to the Pernambuco Water and Climate Agency, Recife recorded 150 mm of precipitation on Saturday, while Camaragibe registered 129 mm.

The maximum rainfall was recorded in Feni district at 38 mm, while the maximum temperature was recorded at 37 C degrees in Mongla district.
15 dead, 3 missing after torrential rains in southern China
At least 15 people have died in torrential rains across southern China, state media reported Saturday.
Eight died in two building collapses from landslides in Fujian province, near China's east coast, the official Xinhua News Agency said, citing the Wuping county information office.
Five others died and three were missing in Yunnan province, about 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) away in southwestern China, state broadcaster CCTV said in an online report.
Three children were swept away by floodwaters Friday in Xincheng country in the Guangxi region, authorities said. Two died and one survived.
The storm damaged roads, bridges and telecommunications and power facilities in Yunnan's Qiubei county, which is about 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of the border with Vietnam.
In Fujian, five victims were found in a collapsed factory building and three others in a collapsed residential building on Friday, Xinhua said.
Heavy rain started Thursday evening in Wuping county, which is about 210 kilometers (130 miles) inland from the coastal city of Xiamen.
Video posted online showed streets flooded with muddy water and some roads partially washed away.
The storm damaged crops, cut power and destroyed 39 houses in the county, state media said. More than 1,600 people were evacuated.

Meanwhile, the trough of low extended from Bihar to North Bay across West Bengal and the southern part of Bangladesh persists.

Due to untimely pre-monsoon showers crops in some 412 hectares of land were damaged in Kurigram according to the Department of Agricultural Extension.
Due to incessant rain in the last two months 265 hectares of Boro paddy, 95 hectares of Jute, 20 hectares of peanut, 12 hectares of vegetables,10 hectares of sesame,, five hectares of quinoa, and five hectares of radhuni horse (spice) were ruined.
“ As the sun did not come out, 30 maund of paddy I harvested started to rot. The wholesalers are not ready to buy these paddies even at tk 600 per maund,” said Suman, a well-off farmer from Shialkanda village in Nageshwari upazila.

Agriculturist Abdur Rashid, Deputy Director of DAE said, “We have got the primary estimation of the damages which shows 60 per cent of the crops got damaged. But we can estimate the amount of loss later.”
He said so far 84 percent of Boro crops in the district have been collected. “The farmers are struggling a bit due to lack of sun otherwise the production met the expectations.”
Md Abdur Sabur, assistant director of Rajarhat weather observatory center said “Due to climate change and easterly wind pressure this year 990 mm of rainfall has been recorded already in April and May this year in the district.”

He said, “The rain showers will persist till June . Already 512 mm of rainfall has been recorded until Monday in this month. Due to excessive rains croplands of low-lying areas in the district are being inundated.”
