Preview of BAN vs AFG 1st ODI 2023
On Wednesday, July 5, Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram will witness the clash between Bangladesh and Afghanistan as they start their three-match ODI series. In their recent limited-overs series, the two teams experienced contrasting results. Afghanistan faced a 1-2 defeat against Sri Lanka, while Bangladesh comfortably achieved a 2-0 victory against Ireland on their home ground. However, both teams will surely try to win the series. Here’s what to expect from BAN vs AFG 1st ODI.
Bangladesh vs Afghanistan Series 2023: 1st ODI Preview
Tamim Iqbal, who has been absent from cricket due to recent injuries, will lead the Bangladesh team. Unfortunately, his batting form has been less than impressive. However, the Tigers have received a boost with the return of Shakib Al Hasan, who missed the last Test due to a finger injury.
With a positive momentum, Bangladesh is set to enter the upcoming series against Afghanistan. Nevertheless, Bangladesh acknowledges the immense talent and versatility of Afghanistan's squad and will not underestimate their opponents. Historically, the pitch at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium has provided an advantage for spinners, often being slow in nature.
The return of Shakib and Rashid Khan will surely help both teams to give a tough fight. Rashid, the leg-spinner, has returned to white-ball cricket, and so is the tone of confidence in the Afghan team. Rashid was injured before the series against Sri Lanka last month. That is why he could not play the first two ODIs. The Afghanistan team management did not want to take the risk of playing him in the Mirpur Test after a few days, even though he returned for the last match.

On the Afghan side, Hashmatullah Shahidi will lead the team. Spinner Izharulhaq Naveed has received his maiden ODI call-up, although it is unlikely that he will make an appearance in the first ODI. Alongside Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Ibrahim Zadran, and Mohammad Nabi are anticipated to play crucial roles for the Afghanistan team. Ibrahim Zadran showcased an outstanding performance in the ODI series against Sri Lanka. Fazalhaq Farooqi, the left-arm pacer, has been causing difficulties for the Bangladesh batters, making him a crucial factor in the upcoming matches.
For Bangladesh, Afif Hossain Dhrubo has made a comeback to the national team and is eager to make a strong performance. Meanwhile, Najmul Hossain Shanto has successfully turned his career around in the past 12 months and was also a strong contender for the Player of the Month award.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz has shown remarkable growth as an all-rounder, and much will rely on his performance. The attention will also be on Bangladesh’s pace bowling attack, which has been exceptional in recent times.
Shakib Al Hasan, who was unable to participate in the one-off Test due to a finger injury, has now recovered and is ready to play in the ODI series. Mushfiqur Rahim will take up the role of the team’s permanent wicketkeeper.

Taskin Ahmed (Bangladesh)

As a result, he is expected to be the strongest and most intimidating bowler for Bangladesh. In his ODI career, Taskin has taken 78 wickets in the 57 matches he has played. Recently, he had a great performance in the last three ODIs, where he took a total of five wickets.

Rashid Khan (Afghanistan)
Rashid Khan, who last played in an ODI series in November of the previous year, is now entering the upcoming series after a successful performance in the IPL. Although he took a break during the Sri Lanka ODI series and the one-off Test series, it is expected that he will continue his outstanding form and make a big impact.
Rashid’s performance against Bangladesh was brilliant. He has got 15 wickets in 9 matches so far in ODIs. Runs per over are just 3.85 runs! He made a big contribution with 3 wickets for 37 runs in Afghanistan’s only win in the series between these two teams last year.
As a 24-year-old spinner, Rashid always impresses with both his bowling and batting skills. In his career, he has played 87 ODI matches for Afghanistan and taken 163 wickets. In the last three ODIs alone, Rashid managed to take a total of eight wickets.
Who is the Favourite to Win?
In one-day internationals, Bangladesh and Afghanistan have faced each other 11 times. Bangladesh won seven of these matches, with four victories on their home ground and three on neutral venues. On the other hand, Afghanistan have won four matches against Bangladesh, with none of the wins being at home, and three were on away venues.

So, considering the previous record, Bangladesh have a great chance to win. Tigers have proven to be a difficult team to defeat in their home conditions. As a result, they will enter the match as favourites, although the Afghan team should not be underestimated and will likely put up a strong fight. In the first match, Afghanistan appear to have an advantage over Bangladesh due to their strong spinning department. Despite Bangladesh having more victories against Afghanistan in the past, the upcoming battle promises to be an exciting one.
Final Words
The BAN vs AFG ODI series is the continuation of the only test match played between these two teams last month. Bangladesh secured an emphatic victory over Afghanistan, winning by a massive margin of 546 runs at their home ground in Mirpur. Now is the time to see if Afghans can come back in BAN vs AFG 1st ODI.

BAN vs AFG ODI Series 2023: Who is the Favourite to Win?
Bangladesh have already become a favorite by winning the Test match against the Afghans. Apart from this, Bangladesh’s win in the last two series against Ireland also makes it positive about winning against Afghanistan. Considering their past performances, Bangladesh seems to have a winning probability in the upcoming ODI series in 2023. However, cricket is a sport where anything can happen, and Afghanistan has proven to be a strong opponent.
Furthermore, Bangladesh’s star cricketer Shakib Al Hasan and Afghanistan’s star player Rashid Khan are back in their teams. They were absent from the Test match. As these two players can change the momentum at any time, anything can happen. So, it will be an exciting and closely contested series between the two teams.

Final Words
Although Bangladesh blew away the Afghans in the only Test match, it will not be easy to win the ODI matches. Bangladesh won the Test match by a record margin of 546 runs. Rashid Khan is returning to the squad, and both teams are close in terms of strength in ODI. The Afghans will come back refreshed after a break, and the loss in the Test match will surely influence them to take revenge. In: Mohammad Naim, Afif Hossain, Taskin Ahmed

Bangladesh ODI Squad Analysis for BAN VS AFG Series 2023
Mohammad Naim and Afif Hossain have been recalled to join the Bangladesh team for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan next month. Taskin Ahmed, who couldn’t play in the games against Ireland last month, is also back in the team. Unfortunately, this time there won’t be a place for Yasir Ali, Mrittunjoy Chowdhury, and Rony Talukdar in the squad.
Taskin, who performed exceptionally well by taking four wickets in the second innings of the single Test against Afghanistan, has fully recovered from a side strain. As for Naim, he has made a comeback to the ODI squad after a two-year break. In the Dhaka Premier League, Naim displayed remarkable batting skills by scoring the highest number of runs, scoring 932 runs in 16 innings with an impressive average of 71.69 and a strike rate of 91.64. It seems that the selectors are considering Naim as a potential substitute opening batsman for Rony in the upcoming World Cup in India later this year. Both Taskin and Naim are potential strengths for the Bangladesh team.

Afif, who was not selected for the home ODI series against Ireland, has made a comeback to the team due to his outstanding performances in the recent DPL. He showcased his skills and impressed the selectors with his consistent performances. Additionally, Afif had the opportunity to lead the Bangladesh A side in two out of the three unofficial Tests against the West Indies A. However, he missed the last game, stating that he was tired and needed rest.
Yasir is one of the three players who were not included in the ODI squad for the upcoming matches, despite being part of the squad last month. Yasir did not get a chance to play in Chelmsford, but he participated in two matches against Ireland in Sylhet back in March. On the other hand, Mrittunjoy, who made his debut in the ODI team in Chelmsford, has been replaced by Taskin in the squad.
Key Players in Bangladesh Squad in the 2023 BAN vs AFG ODI Series
Young players are now contributing to most of Bangladesh’s wins. We hope the following young players, along with veteran Mushfiqur Rahim, will lead Bangladesh in the upcoming ODI series.
Najmul Hossain Shanto
With 196 runs in three matches, Shanto was the top performer in the last Ireland vs Bangladesh series that took place in England. Apart from this, we have also seen his extraordinary performance in the Test match against the Afghans. So, he will likely show his brilliance again in the ODI series. Overall, he has played 24 ODI so far and scored 615 runs in total, with 117 highest scores. Considering his recent performance, it can be said that he might surpass his last batting figures.
Read more: Key Performers in BAN vs AFG Test 2023
Towhid Hridoy
So far, Hridoy has played only six ODI matches and has already scored 249 runs in total with a 49.80 average. He scored 108 runs in total in the last ODI series against Ireland. In his very first ODI match, Hridoy made history by achieving the highest run score ever recorded by a Bangladeshi player. He had a great opportunity to become the first player from Bangladesh to score a century while batting in the fifth-down position. However, he narrowly missed out on the world record by just 8 runs. Later Hridoy showed his potential against the Irish, and he will surely strike in the upcoming series.
Mushfiqur Rahim
For the last few ODI series, Mushfiqur has been in excellent form. During the Ireland series, Mushfiqur Rahim showed an impressive performance, scoring a total of 142 runs in three innings. With an outstanding average of 71, he proved to be a valuable asset for the Bangladesh team. His consistent batting display contributed significantly to the team’s success in the series, and we can expect the same for the upcoming series.
Taskin Ahmed
Taskin has returned after an injury, and he was absent in the last series. After the return, we have seen his excellent performance in the Test match. This year, Taskin has played 5 ODI matches but bowled in four matches. He took nine wickets in these four matches with 3/26 best bowling innings. He has helped Bangladesh win matches several times. Therefore, fans have high expectations that he will once again demonstrate his best performance, just like he did in the previous ODI series Against England.
Ebadot Hossain
Ebadot Hossain stood out as one of the leading wicket-takers in the Bangladesh vs Ireland home series, having taken a total of 6 wickets. However, he could not do well in Chelmsford against the Irish and took only two wickets. But his incredible performance on the home ground is truly admirable. So, we can expect that he will demonstrate his aggressiveness against the Afghans. And we have seen his fierce bowling in the Test match as he took five wickets.

Tamim Iqbal will take charge as the team captain of Bangladesh squad for this series, and he will be joined by Shakib Al Hasan, who has also been included in the squad. Both Tamim and Shakib had been recovering from injuries, which is why they were not part of the recently concluded Test match in Dhaka. Now, they are ready to contribute to the team’s efforts in the upcoming 2023 BAN vs AFG ODI series.

Asia Cup Cricket 2023: Analysis of Group B
The 2023 Asia Cup Cricket tournament will take place in Pakistan from September 2 to 17. The event will feature 6 teams, and they will compete in the One Day International (ODI) format. It is considered the preparatory series leading up to the 2023 Cricket World Cup. The five full members of the Asian Cricket Council, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh will join the tournament. This year, Nepal will also play in the Asia Cup as they qualified by winning the 2023 ACC Men's Premier Cup.
On January 9, 2023, the tournament's groups and format were unveiled, dividing the six teams into two groups of three each. Bangladesh is in Group B along with Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. We will look at Group B's prospects in Asia Cup 2023.
Analysis of Group B
Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka will play in Group B at the 2023 Asia Cup. These three teams are ICC's full members. Hence, they did not need to go through qualifying.
Sri Lanka will join the tournament as defending champions. Sri Lanka appeared 13 times in the Asia Cup and won six times, becoming the second most successful team. They delivered incredible performance in the 2022 Asia Cup. The Lankans were unstoppable throughout the tournament. However, a 105-run loss against Afghanistan in the opening match was the only dissatisfaction. After that, in the rest of the matches, the opponents did not get any chance to beat Sri Lanka. In the final match, they defeated Pakistan by 23 runs to take home the 6th title. They were not much stronger than their opponents, but their dedication helped them win the tournament.

However, this year, Sri Lanka is struggling in the ODI format as they lost most of the ODI series in the last couple of years. Also, they are having a bad time in ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League too. So far, they won only 7 matches out of 24.
On the other hand, another group member Afghanistan is a bit stronger. This will be Afghanistan's third appearance. Afghanistan showed a pretty steady performance in the Asia Cup. They reached the super four twice in 2018 and 2022. The Afghans have been very consistent in recent ODI performances. They drew an ODI series against Sri Lanka in November 2022. Before that, they won a series 3-0 against Zimbabwe. Furthermore, Afghanistan also played well in the ICC Super League. They won 11 ODIs out of 15 matches played and lost only three. So, in the ODI format of Asia Cup 2023, Afghanistan has a great chance to outperform the other two teams (Sri Lanka and Bangladesh) of Group B.
However, among the three teams of Group B, Bangladesh is the favorite to become the group champion and proceed to Super Four. Bangladesh played some outstanding ODI series recently. For example, they beat India by 2-1 in December 2022. After that, they beat England in one ODI game. And, recently, Bangladesh won two series against Ireland. Considering these facts, Bangladesh might win both matches in the group stage. And Afghanistan might be the second team to proceed to the Super Four.

Bangladesh's Prospects in Asia Cup 2023
Bangladesh has appeared in 13 Asia Cups so far. However, the Tigers don't have many satisfactory outcomes; they are yet to win a tournament. The best were runners-up in 2012 and 2018. Bangladesh played 45 matches so far in the Asia Cup and won only 7, and lost 38 matches. So, Bangladesh's performance in the Asia Cup has been quite poor. But, this year, Bangladesh will join the tournament with a strong team. And the country has been preparing to give a good fight. And Bangladesh's most recent performances also portray their determination and dedication.
Although we are over three months away from the Asia Cup Cricket 2023, Bangladesh's recent performances against Ireland, England, and India make them one of the top contenders. Bangladesh's 2-1 ODI series win against India in December 2022 is one of the top inspirations to perform better in the next matches. And we have seen improvements in the England and Ireland series. Tigers have shown incredible performances on the home ground as well as abroad.
If the Bangladesh cricket team can continue its current performance, the county has a great chance to win the Asia Cup this year or at least they can reach the final. However, Bangladesh didn't play against Pakistan lately. So, they will need to analyze Pakistan's recent performance and playing style to find a way to beat them. Other than that, Bangladesh is well aware of other opponents such as India, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka.

As a preparation for the ODI World Cup 2023, this year's Asia Cup will be held in the ODI format. It is expected that, in the upcoming Asia Cup Cricket 2023 tournament, Group B matches will be exciting as all three teams (Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka) have enough experience. Group A contains India, Pakistan, and Nepal.
Preview of IRE vs BAN 2nd ODI 2023 at Chelmsford
Bangladesh and Ireland are set to face off in the second one-day international at Chelmsford on May 12 at 3:45 PM BD time. Unfortunately, the first ODI between these two teams was abandoned due to rain. As a result, South Africa has secured a direct qualification for the World Cup, benefiting from the outcome. Despite their efforts, even if Ireland manages to win the remaining matches in the series, they will not secure a direct spot in the World Cup. However, that does not mean that they will show an ignorant attitude for the next two matches. Let's see what to expect in the 2023 IRE vs BAN second ODI.
Ireland vs Bangladesh 1st ODI Result
Bangladesh has been accompanied by rain since going to England, and the first ODI was the same too. Bangladesh team wanted to celebrate Mushfiqur Rahim's birthday with a win. But the rain did not allow that wish to be fulfilled.
Last Tuesday (May 9) in Chelmsford, England, Bangladesh lost the toss and went into bat and scored 246 runs for 9 wickets. In reply, Ireland did not get a chance to score more than 65 runs for 3 wickets in 16.3 overs due to rain. Later, the match was declared abandoned as the game was not played on the field.

Ireland's openers Stephen Doheny and Paul Stirling got off to bat with a target of 247 runs. However, Stalling was caught by Shariful after 22 runs. After Stirling's departure, Balbirnie quickly returned. The right-handed batsman was bowled in the in-swing by Hasan Mahmud after the team scored 27 runs.
The Irish team found themselves in a tight spot as they lost a couple of early wickets, increasing the pressure on them. Subsequently, spinner Taijul Islam claimed the dismissal of Doheny. Shariful and Hassan started to hold down the Irish after getting a quick wicket. But then the rain hit.
Earlier, Bangladesh lost the toss and went into batting, lost 9 wickets, and collected 246 runs on the scorecard. Mushfiqur scored the highest 61 runs for Bangladesh. However, Bangladesh did not start well in batting. In the opening over, Josh Little came into the attack. A Yorker in the off stump on the fourth delivery of his over hit Litton's pads straight and it was an out. Litton had to return without scoring after playing just one ball. Further, Tamim Iqbal could last long. He scored 14 runs from 19 balls.

Despite Bangladesh having a chance to regain momentum during the middle overs, Towhid Hridoy, Shakib Al Hasan, and Shanto failed to capitalize on their promising starts and convert them into substantial innings. Shakib Al Hasan, known for his reliability, fell victim to Hume's bowling when he attempted a reckless shot. Shanto seemed to be in excellent form, but unfortunately, he mistimed a delivery from Curtis Campher, resulting in a straightforward catch for Mark Adair.
Then Mushfiqur Rahim came to bat. On his 36th birthday, Mushfiqur Rahim showcased his skills in front of a passionate crowd of over 3000 predominantly Bangladeshi fans. He notched up a well-deserved half-century for his team. Alongside him, Najmul Hossain Shanto contributed with a commendable 44 runs.
Despite their efforts, Bangladesh couldn't collect a challenging total on the scoreboard. The foundation of Bangladesh's innings was built upon Mushfiqur Rahim's fifty, with Shanto playing a supportive role in the process.

IRE vs BAN 2nd ODI Preview
In the first match, Bangladesh couldn't collect a big score. That's why the primary goal of the Tamim Iqbal-led team was to prevent Ireland from building a strong base. Both the pacers of the Tigers bowled well in the beginning, using the advantage of the wicket for that purpose.
So, the Tigers will need to follow this approach in the next match even if they collect a big score. Further, both teams will need to focus on the field. The shape of the field at Chelmsford is also worth seeing, as one side is small, and the other side is big. Players will have to be tactical in such a field.
Bangladesh will also need to focus on how the team will be coordinated in this condition. However, with Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the team, Bangladesh does not have to think much about coordination as Miraz is now a pure batsman. He has Test and ODI centuries, and we can call him an all-rounder. So is Shakib. Hence, Bangladesh is very lucky that they can play an extra batsman or bowler if needed. That's a luxury for any team.

On the other hand, Irish bowlers did very well in the first match. They will need to keep it up and put more pressure on Bangladeshi batters. However, they will need to focus on batting as they lost three wickets in the first 15 overs.
Probable Playing XI for Bangladesh Team
Tamim Iqbal (c), Litton Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shakib Al Hasan, Towhid Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Shoriful Islam, Hasan Mahmud, Ebadot Hossain.

Key Players to Watch
Mushfiqur Rahim
Mushfiqur has had a great form lately. While the established batsmen failed to play long innings in the last match, Mushfiqur Rahim took the lead. With his half-century, Bangladesh marked it. But when more runs were needed on the scoreboard, he was caught out while hitting Little. The last established batsman fell on his departure in the 45th over. Mushfiqur made 61 off 70 balls before departing. It had 6 fours. So, fans can expect that Mushi will play another great inning in the second match.
Josh Little
Josh Little is a star bowler for the Irish, and he proved that too. The left-handed pacer, who played in the IPL as Ireland's first cricketer, gave the team success in the first over with a great delivery and dismissed Litton Das by LBW with a superb yorker off the fourth ball. He took 3 wickets for 61 runs for the Irish, and he started getting great movement from the first ball. So, he might play a great role in stopping the Bangladeshi batters.
Final Words
The first one-day game held at the Chelmsford venue was abandoned without a clear indication of which team had the chance to win. However, we anticipate that the more experienced Bangladesh side will emerge victorious in the second ODI as the game is taking place at the same venue.
