Rooppur killing: 3 Belarus nationals sent to jail
A murder case has been filed at Ishwardi Police Station in connection with the death of a Kazakhstan national in Ishwardi Rooppur Residential Project Green city in Ishwardi on Saturday night.
Shvets Vladimir, 50, an employee of contractor firm NIKIMT at Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, was found hacked to death at a house in the Green city, police said. His brother, identified as Amere, was admitted to a hospital with injuries.
A court in Pabna sent three Belarus citizens to jail on Monday, a day after Iurii Fedorov, director of the contracting firm, filed the case accusing them of committing the murder, said Raihan Pervez, sub-inspector of Ishwardi Police Station.
The murder suspects are Urbanavichus Vitali, 44, Fedarovich Henadz, 42, and Matsveyeu Uladzimir, 43. They work at Russian company Rossem.

The three Belarus nationals were earlier detained by police. Later they were shown arrested under the murder case.
The body of the Kazakhstan national was kept at the mortuary of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
In primary investigation police found that the two Kazakh brothers went to the room of three Belarus nationals to settle a monetary dispute. At one stage they got involved in heated arguments.

Police are investigating the suspected murder,” said Raihan.
Shahjahanpur double murder: Prime accused put on 7-day police remand
A Dhaka court on Monday placed Masum Md Akash, the prime accused in the murder of an Awami League politician and a female college student in Shahjahanpur, on a seven-day police remand.
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Tofazzal Hossain passed the order when DB inspector Yeasin Shikder produced him before the court with 15-day remand prayer.
Police on Sunday arrested Akash, 34, from Bogura district.

AL politician Zahidul Islam Tipu, who was in a microbus, and Samia Afrin Priti, a 22-year-old college student, who was in a rickshaw on Thursday night were killed in firing, police said.
During police interrogation, Akash admitted that he followed Tipu to kill and when the vehicle carrying Tipu reached near Shahjahanpur Rail gate he opened fire on him.
Akash was also wanted in four other criminal cases, said police.
Tipu was a former general secretary of AL Motijheel committee and Priti was a student of Begum Badrunnesa Government College. Tipu’s driver was also injured.
The crime occurred in front of Islami Bank Hospital around 10.15pm when Zahidul was returning home in his microbus and Samia on a rickshaw with her friend, police said.
They were all stuck in a traffic jam in the area when a biker wearing a helmet and a mask appeared from nowhere and fired at them.

The three sustained bullet injuries and were soon rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, where Zahidul and the student died of their injuries hours later.
Later a case was filed against unidentified people over the double murder on Friday.
Case filed over Shahjahanpur double murder
A case has been filed against unidentified people over the murder of an Awami League politician and a female college student who were killed in the Shahjahanpur area on Thursday night.
The deceased Zahidul Islam Tipu's wife Farhana Islam Doli filed a murder case with Shajahanpur police on Friday, said Monir Hossain Molla, officer-in-charge of the police station.
Tipu had received death threats over the telephone four or five days ago, according to the statement.
Earlier on Thursday night, Zahidul Islam Tipu, former general secretary of AL Motijheel police station committee, and Samia Afrin Priti, a 22-year-old student of Begum Badrunnesa Government College, were killed while his driver was injured when an assailant allegedly opened fire at them in the capital's Shahjahanpur area.

Fugitive murder case convict held in city after 22 yrs
The Anti-Terrorism Unit of Bangladesh Police arrested a fugitive convict in a murder case from the city’s Khilkhet area early Thursday.
The arrestee was Md Anwar Hossain, 55, of Dinajpur district. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in a murder case in 2005.
Tipped off, a team of ATU conducted a drive in Barua Bazar area in Khilkhet around 12:30am, according to a media release of Bangladesh Police.

In 2000, Anwar killed his second wife Alfatun alias Alta Begum and went into hiding. He had been staying in different areas of Dhaka hiding his identity for 22 years.
During primary interrogation, the arrestee confessed to his involvement with the crime, said the release.
Legal steps will be taken in this regard, It added.

16 convicted in Kushtia triple murder case verdict
A Kushtia court on Monday sentenced three people to imprisonment until death, seven to life term imprisonment, and different jail terms to another six in a case filed over triple murder in Doulatpur upazila.
Kushtia Additional District and Session Judge Court-1 judge Md Tajul Islam passed the verdict in absence of five absconding accused in the case, said Anup Kumar Nandi, public Prosecutor of the court.
The court also acquitted two people from the charges in the case, he said.

Convicts who got imprisonment unto death are, Manik Joardar (absconding) from Katadaha village in Jhenaidah district, Hossain Rana, and Wasim Reza(absconding) from Salimpur village in the upazila.
The seven lifers are Idris alias Mota Jashim (absconding) from Mirpur upazila, Taimul Islam Bipul (absconding), Faruq, Ullash Khandakar, Manir(absconding), Bipul Chowdhury and A Mannan Molla.
The lifers will need to serve additional one year imprisonment if unable to pay the Tk 25,000 fine ordered by the court for each.
The court sentenced six more people imprisonment for different terms for their involvement in the murder.
On October 23, 2009, Jahangir Hossain, a resident of Sharsha upazila in Jashore, his brother and two others were kidnapped and kept hostage in Salimpur village by the accused.
They asked for a huge amount of ransom money from the families of each of the four but Jahangir’s brother managed to flee.
Later on November 25, the accused buried the three kidnaped men after strangulating them to death.
On December 2, the same year, a murder case was filed at Doulatpur police station following the complaint lodged by Jahangir’s brother accusing 16 people.
After a long investigation the investigation officer in the case submitted a charge sheet of the case to court on March 31, 2021.
Two other murder cases filed against the accused are still under trial.
No progress in Tonu murder case yet in 6 yrs
Six years into the murder of college student Sohagi Jahan Tonu police probe into the case has seen little progress with dejected family members losing hope for getting any justice.
Tonu, 19, a second-year history student of Cumilla Victoria College and a member of Victoria College Theatre, was found dead at Cumilla Mainamati Cantonment on March 20, 2016 after she went out for private tuition.
Her murder sparked a huge public outcry amid growing demand for identifying the killers and put them on trial.

Forensic doctors at Cumilla Medical College Hospital conducted two autopsies on her body but their reports did not mention any clear cause of her death.
In May, 2016, CID told media that semen of three men were found in DNA test but the officials concerned declined to make any comment over further development.
Banaj Kumar Majumdar, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), said “CID has done a lot as semen was found after testing DNA we will increase the number of suspected people and we are working focusing on the matter.”
Tonu’s mother Anwara Begum said “No one has come here and asked about Tonu. We are poor and we do not expect any judgment. We just pray to Allah.”
However, a doa mahfil was arranged at the local mosque marking the 6th death anniversary of Tonu and cooked food was distributed among the orphan children.
A disappointed Yaar Hossain, father of Tonu, said “Poor people are always deprived of justice.”
After the recovery of Tonu’s body, police suspected that she had been raped before the murder.
Tonu was buried at a grave at Mirzapur village in Muradnagar upazila on 21 March.

On March 29, 2016, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) started investigation on the killing of the girl.
From March 25-27, 2017, the CID team interrogated Dhaka cantonment.
In 2020, the case was shifted to PBI. But no visible progress has been made yet.
One held over murder of schoolgirl ‘after rape’ in Magura
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested a man from Sreepur upazila of Magura district over the murder of a schoolgirl ‘after rape’.
The arrestee is Hasan Sheikh, 23, a three-wheeler driver and son of Fazlu Sheikh of Hatshrikol village of the upazila.

Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sukdev Roy in a press conference said the arrestee confessed that he had raped the girl before murder and it was preplanned.
Razia Khatun, 12, was found dead on the banks of the Kumar River near her residence in Hatsrikol village of Sreepur upazila on Friday.
A case was filed at Sreepur police station in this regard.
‘Son’ kills father in city
A septuagenarian man was killed as his son allegedly hit his head with an iron rod in Bashundhara Residential area of the city on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Selim Mia, 70, a businessman. He used to live at an apartment located on the 1st floor of an 8-storey building in the area.

Police said the incident came to light when Selim’s son MM Shiekh Ali, 32, surrendered at Bhatara police station at around 2:25 pm saying that he himself killed his father hitting his head with an iron rod.
Quoting Shiekh Ali, officer-in-charge of Bhatara police station Shazidur Rahman Shazid said that the incident occurred at around 5:00 am when his father woke up for Fazar prayers.

Ali said his father did not give money for his mother's treatment that enraged him, said the OC.
Ali entered his father's room at around 5:00 am silently when his father opened the door and hit his head with the iron rod and he died due to hemorrhage, he added.
Police arrested Sheikh Ali.
50-yr-old stabbed to death in Rajshahi
A 50-year-old man was stabbed to death by assailants in Tatarpur village of Rajshahi on Tuesday evening, police said on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Shahbaz Ali, son of Abdul Jobbar of the village in the district's Charghat upazila.

Locals said that Shahbaz was a supporter of Sahabur Ali, a member of the Shalua union parishad (UP). Sahabur had for long been at loggerheads with his rival, Kalam Ali.
As a sequel to their long rivalry, the two groups clashed many a time since Tuesday morning. And when Shahbaz and other supporters of Sahabur were waiting in the Akkaser Mor area in the evening, some men came on bikes and allegedly attacked them.
The assailants allegedly stabbed Shahbaz indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to a local hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Officer-in-charge of Charghat Model Police Station, Jahangir Alam, said that no arrests have been made so far. "However, the situation is now under control," he added.
Man to die for killing wife in Feni
A Feni court on Tuesday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in Fulgazi upazila of Feni district in 2012.
The condemned convict is Abdul Quader Zakaria, 40, of Khajuria village of the upazila.
Additional Sessions Judge Md Kaysar Mosharof Yusuf handed down the verdict and fined the convict Tk 30,000.
According to the case statement, accused Zakaria tortured his wife Ayesha Akter and strangled her at his home on January 5 in 2012. She was later taken to a local hospital where doctors declared her dead.

Later police arrested Ayesha's husband Zakaria .
On June 2 in 2012, the investigating officer of the case and Fulgazi police inspector Abul Manzur submitted a chargesheet against him. The trial began on October 9 of the same year.
